Mercedes Martinez Successfully Defends Championship
On 5/30/09, Mercedes Martinez accepted a dangerous match, considering the biggest match of her career is just one week away. With her huge Iron-Woman match with Angel Orsini on 6/6, Martinez accepted a special "Ferocious Five-Way" Scramble match at the NWS promotion, in Flemington, NJ.
With the WSU Championship on the line, at the 17 minute mark, Martinez was able to pin Roxxie Cotton, in a match that also included Angel Orsini, Annie Social & WSU Tag Champion Brooke Carter. The rules of the match were anything goes and the first one to score a pinfall/submission would be named the victor and WSU Champion.
The match was wild, with brawling all over the place and complete anarchy. It was a dangerous atmosphere for both Mercedes Martinez & the number one contender Angel Orsini. However, both wrestlers wanted this match as they wanted one last crack at each other and ring time before battling in what will be an epic encounter on 6/6 in Boonton, NJ. For the first time in two years, we actually saw Martinez & Orsini work together in this match. Of course, each had their reason to work with the other. Both Orsini & Martinez made sure the other one didn't get pinned, as they wanted to protect their championship match for next week. With the title on the line here, and a 1/5 chance of winning, Orsini & Martinez strengthened their odds by making sure the other didn't get pinned.
To conclude a wild and chaotic match in a heated environment, Orsini hit her "Kiss of Death" finisher on Roxxie. However, Angel then went to fight off Annie & Brooke, and let Martinez pin Roxxie. Orsini made it clear after the match that this gesture was a gift, as she only wanted to make sure her championship match stays in tact on 6/6.
Martinez, after the match, said to WSUWrestling.com, "I didn't need Orsini's help tonight, just like I'm not going to need her help next week in the Iron-Woman match. Do I appreciate Orsini helping me here? What can I say? We know what her motives were, but it is Orsini's cunning thinking and planning that led her to being the longest reigning WSU Champion of all-time, a record I plan on surpassing. It's on next week, and Orsini better be ready for the match of a wrestling life-time."
Orsini after the bout, told WSUWrestling.com, "I could've won tonight, but you can't give up a sure thing. Why risk Martinez blowing it for the both of us and having Annie, Roxxie or Brooke winning the belt a week away before the Iron-Woman match. Hell no that won't happen. It's me and Martinez, one last time, and last I checked Brooke Carter needs a tag team partner, so if Martinez wants to have a championship in WSU, maybe she should talk to Brooke, because after I win the belt next week, Martinez can't get a title shot vs me. See you in Boonton."
Other WSU notes stemming from last night:
- WSU Tag Champion Brooke Carter would not reveal who her partner is for next week, only telling WSU officials, "It is someone everyone in the womens wrestling world knows, and someone I think WSU fans will be happy to see." Carter actually has a shoulder injury right now but requested she not be pulled from this match, signing an injury waiver in the event anything happened. Brooke's desire to be in the ring with the very best in WSU is one of the reasons she has won the tag belts so early in her career. Check out WSUWrestling.com for more on Brooke's situation for 6/6.
- The Beatdown Betties, Annie Social & Roxxie Cotton, are looking forward to finally ending their issue and the careers of "those two pickle kissers", Rick Cataldo & Sean Hanson on 6/6. Their tag team match has an interesting stipulation, as it is a "Losers-Leave-The Beatdown Betties" match. On 6/6, once for all, everything will come to a head. Will we see the disformation of the former 2-time WSU Tag Team Champions, Annie Social & Roxxie Cotton? Or will Social & Cotton rid WSU of Cataldo & Hanson forever? Find out on 6/6!
