The Mad Whipper Whip
TELL EM WHY YOU MAD...
Wassup people and welcome to the column by the newest mo'fo on the DOI...MAD WHIPPER WHIP!
I know, who the hell am I, right?
Well I'm someone who knows a lil something about wrestling and has had some strong opinions about the business I love. Doesn't mean I'm right though. I had the honor to learn from some of the greats and know many of the future stars. So I got some shit to say about what I see in wrestling. This column of mines is meant for me to bring a different view on things, even if it pisses some people off, and hopefully sparks some things to talk about among the "smarts".
So let GO!
Recently I ask a friend of mines if he would run a promotion in Jersey. You see, his dreams are to run his own promotion so he learned the business from almost all aspects and met many more people than I did in wrestling, to soak up all the info he could. He said he might, but right now, it was too congested in Jersey. I agree. You see, as most of you know, the business right now seems to have started bringing back the fans who want to see an independent wrestling show after it being slow for a while. JAP & JCW are seeing good house numbers. Ring of Honor did INCREDIBLE at thier last show. But does it seem like just when it seems to be doing good again, that everybody is rushing to do another show or another promotion pops up?
In no secret that from NY to Philly to Deleware, there are TONS of trained wrestlers. And everybody is looking to wrestle for a payday. It's an unfortunate circumstance that occured during wrestling's last big boom when everybody wanted to be a wrestler. Fast forward to now and you have tons of trained guys all looking for work. But that's another topic for another time.
Keeping with the subject, you would think that more promotions equals more paydays.
Not true.
More promotions can (and does sometimes) means that less people are willing to travel to see so much wrestling in a short period... which means:
More shows + Less House numbers = more shows with less & less paydays
Which, can mean, more guys looking to get on a card and willing to take less pay than the next man.
I love my fellow wrestlers. I understand the sacrafices that one must do sometimes to make it. I know what happens when you're in that ring and what you go through when your mind says "yes" but your body is screaming NO. You keep on and in the point that I would like anybody reading to think, is that sometimes less is more even if you don't see it.
So this is why I could essentially say "I'm Mad" cause in looking out for my fellow wrestlers (as a worker or a fan), I would always like to see them get the most out of this thing we call wrestling. This is NOT to shit on the promoters out there but to bring to light some of the things that even so called "smarts" don't even know about. Some say they want more indy wrestling or make extra demands of wrestlers without really knowing what happen afterward.
Jersey is a hotbed of talent and promotions right now, no question. But another thing I would like to bring up is, how come we see so much repeat talent? I mean why do I see so many of the same guys on the same cards all over the place? I'm not talking about the stars either (i.e. Balls, Candido, Sabu, Snow, ect.), no...no...no...I'm talking about the guys that are HUGE on the indy scene along without the history of ECW, WWF (fuck an 'E'), or SMW. We know who some of them are. They are soo good that they deserved to get booked like they do but where does that leave the local up and comers? It's bad enough we already have a watered down market of wrestling in NJ with little paydays (see above), but now it's harder to get booked as well to begin with.
I mean, there are soo many promotions using the same guys that it seems hard as hell to get in WITH the proper training. Think of this instead...What if we have fewer promotions utilizing a nice tight roster that can be depended on, and maybe we can actually have some nice angles to follow that include the same guys. I would love wrestlers to make as much as they can but right now it also as rare, in my book, to see a promotion that has almost exclusive talent...again, I said ALMOST EXCLUSIVE talent (God forbid I get misquoted). It could pick up houses all over the area knowing that if a wrestler can only be seen in certain places working certain angles, you might make the trip. PLUS WE COULD MAYBE FOLLOW AN ANGLE! (Oh how I dream)
And maybe it would cause a ripple effect that stablizes paydays so their isn't as much competion for work so certain guys won't be taking cuts just to get booked (the agony).
And maybe, the audience wouldn't become so trained on seeing the same kind of matches in every place (1-2-3-SPOT, 1-2-3-SPOT).
And maybe one place caters to a family type audience where my kids could have fun watching and I know I can ALWAYS bring them too while I can go to another kind of show where I can curse my ass off at Prince Nana like he's a bootlegger while getting hammered and have my friends think of things that can fit up Matt Strikers ass (of course to yell at him).
Or maybe I don't know what I'm talking about.
But maybe having the New York State Athletic Commision is good for NY after all, cause it can trim away the fat sometimes unlike Jersey.
Holla at your Muthaphukkin Boy!
