Random Thoughts

Here we go again, it seems like almost every time I write a column, it is usually the same old subject, HATERS. So this week, the person who is being hated on is none other than a certain wrestling promoter by the name of Frank Goodman. Mind you, I am no longer wrestling so I have no reason to defend this man cause quite frankly it is of no benefit to me whether I do or don't. But the truth is, Frank Goodman has been a good man to me and to others around me. He is courteous, respectful and easily approachable. He is open to listening to whatever you have to say whether or not you are a former WWF/WCW/ECW guy or an opening match ticket seller. He is very caring to his family, especially his children and enjoys the business of professional wrestling with a passion unmatched by most.

So does Goodman have a bad side? I am sure he does. Has he went back on promises? Probably. Does that make him an evil man? No. Has he cancelled other promoters shows before? Yes. He admitted it himself. He cancelled Keith Zimmer's show a few months back and probably cancelled countless others not mentioned.

But the fact is, if you go back through the history of professional wrestling, you will find promoters who have done the same, IF NOT MORE than Goodman has. Finished looking yet? I can easily, off the top of my head name you ten to fifteen promoters who were scumbags and ass*holes who were successful in paving the path that wrestling is currently on. Want examples?

Vincent Kennedy McMahon is the first on the list. The man took his own money with two other investors, mortgaged his new home with wife Linda and purchased the Capitol Wrestling Corporation which was the parent company to the WWWF from his father (it was not willed to him like some youngsters today think). He then from there purposely went from territory to territory and STOLE the best workers out of each group in order to make his promotion national thus breaking the back of the NWA which his father was a board member of. He then syndicated his own show and sold it to the major networks in the markets of these promotions thus eliminating them from airing due to the fact that he was paying networks to air his show while the networks were paying these NWA groups to air. (Which would you rather do? Pay someone to air their show on your network or have someone pay for their show themselves?) So basically he violated the fact that there were regions and territories in wrestling and took his show national. And look at what he is doing today. He won the wrestling war and employed his two rival promoters. Not only that but the man is re-writing history with a DVD that comes out this month called "The Rise and Fall of WCW". COME ON!!!! Is their need to continue to bury a company which he already owns? No. Of course not. But he does it anyway. He enjoys beating a dead horse.

Paul Heyman is another promoter that comes to mind. Sure the man was a genius of a booker. Sure he put on some of the best shows in Indy wrestling history (and no matter what people say, I don't care if they were on PPV monthly, they were an Indy fed). And from the stories I head, Heyman could sell you snow during a blizzard. That is how much of a motivator (not a Marc Adler) he was. But the fact remains that he bounced check after check on each of his wrestlers and in the weeks leading up to ECW's demise, he was virtually unreachable. He denied time and time again that ECW was going out of business and that they were just struggling. He denied time and time again that he was going to work for the WWE and that Vince McMahon has sank some money into ECW to try and keep it afloat. Well what happened folks? One day, several ECW workers decide to watch RAW and who shows up? PAUL HEYMAN. After he vehemently denied going to WWF and that ECW was closing, he shows up on WWE TV and a few weeks later ECW is closed and filing for bankruptcy. Did Vince loan money to ECW? No Heyman said. Well during the ECW bankruptcy proceedings, it is revealed that World Wrestling Entertainment was owed over $500,000 by ECW. How could that be? Someone was lying. Maybe it was the federal government?

Cowboy Bill Watts. I won't even go into dramatic details on how much of an assh*le this guy was. For Christ's sake, anyone who becomes a booker and bans moves off the top rope is an assh*le. Bottom line. It is a part of wrestling. The man cut salary by more than half for everyone on his roster in order to save money when he was booking WCW.

I can ramble on and on about promoters who screwed people out of money, lied, cheated and stole. Eric Bischoff (WCW), Rob Black (XPW), Roland Alexander (APW), John Collins (Remember MECW two years ago?), Jim Cornette (SMW), the list goes on and on.

But the fact is, all of the above mentioned promoters were visionaries who knew how to put out a product that people liked and paid money for. XPW had a hardcore group of fans. Smokey Mountain Wrestling was at one point the best fed in the US during the down period for WCW and WWF before the 90's wrestling boom happened. All Pro Wrestling was the best indy fed on the West Coast which produced such wrestlers as Mike Modest, Crash Holly, and Christopher Daniels.

The same can be said about Frank Goodman. He knows what his promotions niche is. He knows that he can run a successful show that GUARANTEES will not draw less than 600 people. He knows that he is going to make a profit on each and every show that is run. WWE CAN'T SAY THAT!!!! House show attendance is so dismal that they cancel house shows in certain markets due to the fact that the cost will not equal the profit. Has Goodman ever cancelled a show cause he was going to lose money? NO. I don't even think he has lost money on a show.

So with all these examples, where are all the message board posts and secret e-mails bashing Vince McMahon and his family? Vince's daughter is an ugly, overbearing, annoying b*tch who has no business running a wrestling promotion. Vince's son definitely has no business in a wrestling ring every few months and on his best day is not half as good as most of the ticket sellers on USA PRO shows. How come no one starts a post with the title, "VINCE MCMAHON'S MONKEY FAMILY!!!"

Where are all the secret e-mails about Rob Feinstein and Gabe Saplosky? I know Rob and he is a cool dude but there are stories out there about him. Missy Hyatt recently said he was gay and couldn't get his d*ck hard while she was naked on his bed waiting for him to bang her. No posts on that.

Not a knock on Carmine from SSCW as he is a sincerely cool dude but he has a disorder that makes him not want to leave his house. No bashing on him other than an occasional joke from friends of his and those close to him.

So why Goodman? Well I have a few theories on it but the one that comes to the forefront is the fact that GOODMAN IS SUCCESSFUL!!!! That easily makes him public enemy number one. The Notorious B.I.G. said it best, "THE MORE MONEY YOU MAKE, THE MORE PROBLEMS YOU GET." It's that simple. People hate. People are hating on him cause he is the second most successful wrestling promoter in the United States (sorry Frank but Jim Kettner and the ECWA has you beat). Other promoters hate on him and I wouldn't doubt that some of these posts come from them. Why wouldn't they be mad? He can book ten former WWF/WCW/ECW guys for less than half of what they pay. Why? Cause he has respect of plenty of wrestlers. And those anonymous posters who come out here with their stupid little names like "Faker" or IKNOWTHE TRUTH" or whatever your fake name you use, you guys are probably former wrestlers who Goodman no longer uses.

Guess what fellas, he doesn't use you cause you either:
A) F*cked him over.
B) Flat out suck
C) Did nothing to make money for USA Pro in any way, shape or form.
D) All of the above

So the bottom line is, Frank Goodman, if you read this. Don't sweat it. Haters are a part of life and wrestling. If you were a successful turtle racing promoter and make the amount of money you do, people would still be hating on you. You can't let this get you down or frustrated. Just continue doing what you do and continue doing it the best, promoting wrestler better than anyone else in New York State.

And to the haters out there, when are you going to learn? Say what you want about people. Bash them, bash their families, bash their friends and make up lies and stories. Do whatever you want cause the fact is, those who you bash are still going to do their thing and be successful at it. A few words on a message board isn't going to prevent that. You can't win. You're fighting a losing battle. HATERS HATE ON!!!
