JCW "Reload" 2/22/04 Thoughts
The DOI already has two fine reports on this event, so I won't rehash all the
details again. However if anyone's interested I thought I'd just chime in with
a few impressions of my first JCW show.
First of all, the place was packed. I've seen a lot of bs back and forth on the
board about the attendance. I don't know the hard number but every seat was
full by 3:30. Lots of families with kids, which is kind of fun and also kind of
a pain in the neck.
The building itself is a great building for wrestling, lots of floor space. The
doorway is a little cluttered; the gym proper could use a larger entrance.
Still, a minor complaint. The food was awesome. They had excellent sausage
sandwiches and all kinds of great stuff.
I went into the show with few or no expectations so I was happy with what I got.
Ricky O seems to have a pretty decent eye for talent for the most part. I know
there's a lot of controversy around Ricky in particular and JCW talent relations
in general. I don't know much about any of it and as a fan I don't really care
either. It's just not my business one way or another. I just come to see a
show. I met the man, he was cool to me and didn't seem like the ogre I've heard
about. What he's like to work for I don't know, and I don't care. NMP: Not My
Problem.
The TV commercial thing took a little too long for my taste. Between this, the
announcements, and Prince Nana's promo [which did get him some good heat], the
first match didn't start until almost 4 o'clock.
Nice to see Scotty Charisma outside the confines of ACW. He didn't really get
to show everything he can do here since he was basically in as almost a jobber,
and a babyface jobber at that. I though his actual wrestling was good as usual.
IMO he makes a better heel than he does a babyface. Hopefully JCW and other
feds will do more stuff with him.
The Chikara 6 man was really entertaining. I'm glad that I'm not doing a full
write up so that I don't have to try to describe all those wild spots. I've
seen most of these guys in NAWF but they seemed much better here, especially
Akuna.
Mo Sexy vs Red Hot Russ = match between 2 guys I just can't care about too much.
"Mo" is doing a good job of trying learn different ways to work since he was
heel last week and a face here.
Liked the Dave Greco vs Damian Adams match a lot. I thought Kevin Matthews'
deal got good heel heat. The fans didn't really understand why they were
supposed to hate him, but they got it that they were supposed to hate him, and
booed him quiet well. Watching all this I took it as a given that it was an
angle to build to something on the inter-promotional show on March 6. Shows you
how much I know. Though I'm sure there will be some kind of a wrestling angle
built out of this.
I was actually in the men's room for at least part of the infamous SSCW TV Title
Belt Incident, but I don't think my brain really registered what my eyes were
seeing. When I saw The Mic's report I was like "Oh, that's what that was all
about."
Okay, I try to avoid saying bad things about the wrestlers since I cannot do
what they do. But, Miss Kara looked really bad in the womens' title match.
Those were the worst flying elbows I've seen since Chyna was the WWE I-C
champion. Miss Kara is definitely a feast for the eyes but either she isn't
quiet ready to compete as a single or else she just had a bad day - which can
happen to anybody. Let's cut her some slack and assume the latter for now.
DDD vs SHSHSH was a fun match to watch [to my surprise since I'm not a huge mark
for either guy] but the ending really sucked. Would have been an okay finish
to any other kind of match but for a loser-leaves-town I didn't care for it. If
they go on to have a good rematch and/or program the fans will forget all about
it though. Dragon seems a lot better than when I saw him in ICW a few years
back.
I barely restrained myself from yelling out "Dig it!" repeatedly during
Darling/Striker vs Inferno/Wenzel. This was half a rematch of a great tag team
match I saw way back in 1997 at an otherwise horrible show at the New Britain
Sports Palace. That match featured Ace Darling/Devon Storm vs Reckless
Youth/Inferno (Kid). These guys were awesome then and they've still got it.
The indy scene has changed in such a way that Darling, then an average size guy,
looks like a big heavyweight now. I'm glad Inferno, who is clearly talented,
is getting a break but I could have lived with a little less of the tributes.
Between the two Inferno love fests, the commercial, Nana, and the long plug by
the infamous Geno Moore, I felt like there was just too much talking. If I was
regular follower/attendee of NJ wrestling and knew these guys' histories maybe
I'd have felt differently. Speaking of Moore, once again I won't get into the
out of ring stuff since I have no firsthand information. However seeing and
hearing him my basic reaction was "Wow, what a charisma-free human being". The
man couldn't get me excited about a steak dinner if I was starving to death.
Main event was a little short and it seemed like they went to the finish very
abruptly. I didn't really care that much though since I just wanted to see
Kamala and 2/3 of the Triple Threat in action and I got that. The match was
really good while it lasted. I agree with whoever said that next time they
definitely need a Kimchee.
I'm planning to go back on the 28th for Honky Tank and already bought 2 very
inexpensive front row tix at the Feb show. Gotta love a 2 for 1 special. After
all, I can't miss THE greatest Inter-Continental Champion Of All Time, now can
I? [Dig it!]
The drive home just sucked. Oh yeah, now I remember, this is why I don't go to
NJ more often. Nuke the Bronx River Parkway! Actually judging by the
condition of the road, I think someone already did. Dig it [up and repave it]!
Whew, I am finally all caught up. On to CCW this weekend. A show close to
home for a change.
