A.D.'s Connecticut Top 5 Rankings for the Weekend of 3/20-3/21

Since I had the unusual opportunity to see two shows in CT the same weekend, I thought I'd blatantly steal The Mic's gimmick and hit the highlights of this week on the CT scene. Plus it'll give our readers some idea of how the shows were until my job calms down enough to allow me some free time in which to write.

Singles Wrestlers Of The Week

5) Red Hot Russ - Had a fine ECPW world title defense against Jay Santana on Saturday. You have to admire this man's work ethic; he put on just a good a showing in front of a small crowd in Fairfield as he did in front of 1650 screaming people in NY. I've officially changed my opinion of RHR: this guy is good.

4) Avil Graves - Won the ACW Hardcore Title in a wild three way dance against Mutilator Nemesis and Mutilator Jamie Pain.

3) Eddie Edwards - Had an excellent TV title challenge against champ Scotty Charisma that successfully got over with the tough ACW crowd.

2) Scotty Charisma - With a little help from Talia, Scotty outsmarted La Familia's combo of Edwards and manager/valet Ariel to retain the TV title in an exciting match. For the second month in a row Scotty proves you don't have to bleed to get the ACW crowd behind you.

#1 - TIE -Tony DeVito - Demonstrated both scientific skills and great brawling ability in a wild match against Dylan Kage that went a legit 20 minutes despite DeVito sustaining a nasty looking arm injury. Can't leave Kage out here either, as he held his own well in a more hardcore style of match than I'd previously seen him work. A rematch is said to be already in the works.

#1 - TIE - Justin Credible - Worked hard in two matches to win the 3rd Annual ACW Delicious Dave Vicious Memorial Cup. Showed a great work ethic and a lot of class, as did his opponent in the finals, Kid Kash.

Female noteworthies:

Simply Luscious - Had a great ACW ladies' title match against Mercedes Martinez. SL was also terrific in her interactions with the fans both in and out of the ring. I hope she hangs on to the ACW Womens' title for a long time since that would mean that we lucky CT fans will get to see her often.

Mercedes Martinez - It takes two people to make a match click. Martinez has been doing underappreciated work in a number of feds and she had another solid showing Sunday. Has the rare ability to appear equally credible against either male or female opponents.

Ariel - She will HATE this comment if she reads it, but I would have said that Ariel was much too cute to get over as a heel. She proved me wrong on ACW's "Point Blank", where she succeeded in appearing every bit as despicable as the rest of La Familia and getting the fans completely against her. Ariel made her presence felt in the womens' match and in at least two other matches as well. Should be interesting to see how the Simply Luscious vs La Familia feud plays out as SL is currently outnumbered two to one.

Talia - As a valet/manager, she beat Ariel at her own heelish game in the ACW TV title match.

WE'RE GONNA PARTY LIKE IT'S 1999 AWARD: This one goes out to The Mercenary and Curtis Slam Dawg, who made a much welcome return to the CT scene at ACW this past Sunday. I hadn't seen these guys since an MWA show that ran here in Stamford back in 2000. They looked better than ever. I definitely wouldn't mind seeing Mercenary and Slam Dawg - who have gone from rookies to seasoned veterans since I first saw them in the mid 1990s - on some more CT shows. Maybe they can renew their old rivalry with Ron Zombie.

KEEP ON TRUCKIN AWARD: This one goes to everybody who worked the ECPW Spring Slam show in Fairfield. They went out and gave the fans a respectable, entertaining show when it would have been very easy to slack off. Here's hoping that ECPW gets some love from the CT fans on their next show here. They've certainly shown they can do it elsewhere.

AD's MATCH OF THE WEEK: "Twisted Freak" Avil Graves vs Pain vs Nemesis, ACW Hardcore Title match. What can I say, I like a good bloodbath. And this one was damned good. Avil is way over with the ACW fans. I'm betting he actually would have had a title sooner if he wasn't ACW owner Jason Knight's son. All three guys in this match took a ton of abuse and did some creative stuff. "The Twisted Freak" should make a great hardcore champ.

I'll be back....soon....with full reports on both shows.
