John Kerry, The Joke & The Misconception

There's a problem in our Country, and this John Kerry 'insult' scandle should really put it into perspective. Now look, I'm not the biggest John Kerry fan, but I still voted for him. I voted for him because I liked him more then Bush, and would have liked to have seen a change in the political scenery at that time.

We're talking about today though; about random acts of major news that will leap into our faces just before we send in our ballots. Evangelist meth addicts, Saddams verdict, gas prices lowering, 9/11 conspiracies, gay marriage, stem cell research; these have all come up, or back up into to some kind of social light. The one the really interests me however, is the issue over John Kerry supposedly insulting our troops overseas.

This situation confuses me, because John Jerry is a politician. Which means he lives his life following four steps:

1) Create a public persona via your interests and opinions, which will hopefully be embraced by as much of the populous around you.

2) Gather about you intelligent, crafty and wealthy political and business figures to support you..

3) Use the know-how and ability of the people in the 2nd Step, to aid you in rallying as many as 1st Step people you can. This will enable you to rise as high as you can go in the political field.

4) Keep the populous, political figures, and businesses happy; by giving them the things they ask for and solving the problems that concern them.

Now insulting the men and women of the armed forces is doing one of the worst things a politician could do. It's basic career suicide, and why would he do that? Kerry is not some idiot, he's a smart man. Now whether you are for or against the War In Iraq or War on Terror, you should support the men and women of our armed forces. Whether you support the choices our President and his cabinet make, our troops lives are still on the line. This Administration could be 100% correct on the War, or 100% wrong, our soldiers can, have and will be killed over it either way. Killed for the ideology which is the 'American Way', and the greater good of our world. John Kerry knows a large percentage of the population is weary of the war, but they're not hoping to see our soldiers take a bullet for any reason. So why would he open up a floodgate of hate and anger upon himself? How would that benefit his job or his party in any way?

John Kerry made a joke about our President and his Cabinet, which he has a right to do becuase this is America, and he's an American. He's also a politician who happens to not agree with, or like our current Administration, which is his personal business as a citizen and his professional business as a Democratic Senator. John Kerry did not make his joke as clear as he should made it though, and being a politician, he should have known better. It's vote time people, and anything you say, can and will be used against you and your party in the worst possible way. John Kerry should have worded his joke better, made sure that it could in no way, shape, or form be linked to anyone except his targets; Bush and the White House. He didn't and is now facing the backlash, which is pure mudslinging at it's very best, and he can blame himself for that. He can only blame himself for how much this has been blown out of proportion though, because John Kerry, like all politicians, have been playing this game for far too long.

This is the problem with politicians and politics, and it's been this way for centuries here in America. Its been happening from the days of political detractors calling President Taft a 'fat pig', to today, where we have Senator Kerry calling President Bush and his Cabinet 'stupid'. The sad trend is this; you garner votes and support not by telling people who you are, but rather who your opposition is not. You don't become a leader by showing people what you support, you tell them about what the 'other guy' is against. This has caused every election to be about choosing the 'lesser of two evils', instead of choosing the 'better man/woman' for the job. That's a huge problem we've yet to really address. Isn't it obvious that this election basically spent billions of dollars on political shit-talking Nation wide. That we've allowed this, we've enabled it by not speaking up and asking for just a touch of class and dignity from our elected officials.

Kerry knew better, he's a politician, and he knew the nature of the beast. If he had made a joke about cannibals that wasn't clear enough on who it was directed toward, the Bush administration would have labeled him a 'baby eater'. Yet I can't fault them, because these tactics work, they're tried and true. It's not a Republican agenda, it's a political agenda. The Democrats would have done the same thing, if Bush had made a joke that wasn't clear enough. One they could construed as an insult directed at our soldiers just before the election.

It's time we stop buying into the negative, and start demanding more from the politicians' themselves. We need to demand the official looking to be elected to any seat, house or office, to explain to us why THEY are right for the job, not why the other person is wrong.

Get out and Vote for the best person for the job on Tuesday, not against the worst.

Spooky
