Tomorrow is September 11th 2006. It will be 5 years since our country was attacked. On that day we lost around 3000 innocent people and our country united in the face of destruction, death and terror. Americans everywhere decided that they were going to pull out their flags and be patriotic. Everyone wanted to support America in this war that was brought upon us.
When that fateful day hit I’ll always remember what I was doing, how I was feeling, who I was talking to and what I was planning. I was home alone and my future wife was on her way to work. She called me to tell me to put on the TV because a plane had just hit the World Trade Center. I was like “no shit” and I put on the news. There it was – the WTC on fire with a big gaping hole in it. Like everyone else I thought “what drunk asshole could fly his small plane into the WTC?” Then I started thinking about the movie Towering Inferno and I was wondering how NY’s Bravest were going to fight this fire.
As I’m watching the news and listening to Howard Stern at the same time something happened that sent chills down my spine. Something happened that changed our world forever. I'm looking at the TV screen and from the corner of the screen comes another airplane. What the fuck!?!? A second plane hit the other tower of the World Trade Center. WE WERE UNDER ATTACK.
My first thought was to call my partner in grime – Marc Adler. Better known to some of you as The Motivator – a ticket selling hard core wrestler who was also my best friend and an inactive Marine. I told him what happened and he got up out of bed and rushed over to my apartment. Together we watched in shock as the events unfolded. We made some phone calls to some friends in the police force and tried to get through to the Mayor’s office. We were ready to report to duty. We thought we needed to get down to the site of the attack or report to the local police station to help secure our streets. We had no clue if there was a second wave planned. Maybe foot soldiers in the streets of NYC would open fire on innocent Americans. Maybe bombs or chemicals would be unleashed upon us. We had no clue. We just knew we needed to act. My cousin who is a big time police officer instructed me and Marc to stay home. We’d never make it into the city and if we did it would take a long time to do it. He said to stay home or get over to my job where I run skill building programs for teenagers. They may come to the Community House looking for help or advice. We call the Community House and they told us they are going to be shutting the place down once they can get the Senior Citizens who are in their programs out of there. So going into work wasn’t an option either.
That entire day Marc and I sat by the TV and watched and watched. I cried a couple of times and have cried dozens of times more since then. Our emotions were all over the place. Sadness, anger, frustration – everything. We felt it all that day just like you did. We talked about Americas response. We talked about what the future would hold. Marc said something that I didn’t think about much but it rang true and this is what this column is really all about.
Marc said on September 11th 2001 “watch how everyone gets out their American flags and are all of a sudden these great patriotic people.” He was upset about it. You have to understand Marc to understand his anger here. He’s a die hard Patriot. A supporter and defender of the Constitution of the United States of America. He volunteered his life to serve his country and joined the U.S. Marine Corp. He served for a couple of years and was overseas in Japan for some time. The guy is a true American and he knew right then and there that America was about to “unite” and he also knew it wasn’t going to last.
Not too long after 9/11/01, I was promoting shows with Frank Goodman and USA Pro Wrestling. Marc had a scheduled match with Low Life Louie. It was set to be a hardcore match. Marc wanted to cut a promo before the match. He felt he needed to get over as a heel because Louie is such a loved guy that being the bad guy would make sense for this match. The Motivator comes out with his manager Amanda Violet and the crowd was chanting USA! USA! USA! as he handed out mini American flags. He gets into the ring and he cuts a promo on the standing room only crowd at the legendary Elks Lodge in Queens, NY. He rips everyone in there a new asshole. The Motivator is disgusted with all the fake patriotism that he sees. Where were all these flag wavers on September 10th? Why did it take an attack on our homeland and the murder of close to 3000 people and hundreds of thousands of lives ruined for people to unite and show some love to this fantastic country? It was an absolute disgrace to the Motivator. But it wasn’t just a gimmick. Marc Adler the American citizen was mad as hell over it. He said it then that it wouldn’t last. Fair weathered Americans is what he said. They’ll all turn their backs on us and they’ll all forget about this day in due time.
No way in hell I thought. Our country was united. Flags everywhere!!! The streets were flooded with Red, White and Blue. The Motivator’s prediction would ring true though and to me its just as sad as watching the events unfold on that terrible September morning.
Half this country have forgotten about 9/11/01. They’ve turned their attention to what they think is America’s biggest enemy – President Bush. I have no problem with anyone questioning a President. That’s part of our great nation. You can do that. Its all good. But the way half this country turned its back on America and allowed their sheer hatred for the President was and still is a disgrace. WE ARE AT WAR! WE’VE BEEN AT WAR! WE SHOULD BE STANDING TOGETHER UNITED FOREVER! To attack a standing President during a time of war is TREASON in my opinion. You give the bad guys strength when you should be showing your resolve.
Maybe you don’t agree with the way the war was fought but to make George W. Bush the biggest enemy of our country is not only wrong but its divided our country when unity is needed more then ever.
As the hours draw closer to the 5th anniversary of the worst attack on our nations soil I’ve made sure to remind myself as much as possible the hurt and pain we all felt that day. I’ve watched a ton of different shows that tell all the stories from Ground Zero, the Pentagon and that field in PA. where those brave Americans forced that plane down before it hit another strategic target of the terrorists. Its so important for us to NEVER FORGET what happened. We have to fight back and never stop fighting back. There should be NO negotiating with any terrorist or any state that harbors terrorism. No appeasement. NOTHING. We should be fighting and kicking the ass of everyone everywhere that is against our beliefs that terrorists should not be allowed to plan and execute attacks against innocent people who want to live in peace and freedom.
I am disgusted with the people who’ve hurt our country that call themselves Americans. They could care less about our country. All they care about is regime change within the United States and its because of their pure unadulterated hatred of George Bush.
Pure idiocy.
To all those who were directly hurt by the events of 9/11/01 my thoughts and prayers have been with you since that day and they will be with you until my last breath. To those who were not directly effected but are feeling pain and had their lives changed I’m with you too. To those who have pulled down their flags and pointed their anger at our own Govt and at George Bush – I mean this with all my heart – I hope you suffer the same pain that so many of us feel. You make me sick and I could care less what you think about me or how I feel about you. You do not deserve this country and its freedoms. The terrorists absolutely believe they can break our will. They know they cant beat us in war but they know they can break the will of the American people and the war would be lost from within. You’re allowing this to happen. You’ve turned your back on your country and I hate you for it. You make me sick!
NEVER FORGET!
