The Democratic Party has captured the House of Representitives and is 2 extremely close races away from regaining the Senate as well. In Virginia, incumbent Republican George Allen was locked in a virtual deadlock with Democratic challenger Jim Webb. As of 5:00am Wednesday morning they were separated by 7,800 (Webb leading) with indications the final outcome will not be known for a couple of days. Both parties dispatched lawyers to observe the tally of absentee ballots. "The votes are in and we won," Webb told a crowd of jubilant supporters at a northern Virginia hotel ballroom. "This is a great moment for all of us who believe in an inclusive society ...I will look forward to representing all of you to the best of my ability."
In the other hotly contested race, Montana incumbent Republican Senator Conrad Burns was waiting to hear if he survived his toughest re-election bid against Democratic challenger Jon Tester. Burns has said that the counting machines in Montana failed and the votes will have to be counted by hand now and there could be a final result by Wednesday morning.
In the other contested Senate races: PA. incumbent Rick Santorum lost his seat to challenger Bob Casey. In Missouri we saw challenger Claire McCaskill claim victory over Republican incumbent Jim Talent. Republicans also lost a Senate seat in Ohio, when incumbent Sen. Mike DeWine was beaten by Democratic Rep. Sherrod Brown. In Rhode Island, longtime Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee lost to Democratic challenger Sheldon Whitehouse. Republican Bob Corker defeated Democratic Rep. Harold Ford Jr., in the race for the Tennessee Senate seat being vacated by outgoing Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist. Senator Joe Lieberman defeated Liberal Democrat Ned Lamont for the seat in CT. In New Jersey, Democratic incumbent Sen. Bob Menendez beat Republican state Sen. Tom Kean Jr., son of the popular former governor and Sept. 11 commission chairman who shares his name. In Maryland, Democratic Rep. Ben Cardin held off Republican Lt. Gov. Michael Steele for the seat vacated by retiring Sen. Paul Sarbanes.
Democrats, meanwhile, celebrated Tuesday night after capturing the House of Representatives in convincing fashion.
Democrats needed to swing 15 seats to take control, but by the end of the day they had won 26 seats. With the Democratic Party win in the House we can expect to see the first ever female Speaker of the House in San Fransico Rep. Nancy Pelosi. The Speaker of the House is third in line to the President should something happen to both President and Vice-President.
This brings to a conclusion one of the most negative elections we've ever seen here in the United States. With smear campaigns running rampant this past election the American people must put their foot down and demand that the dirty tactics stop and focus be back on taking our country down a positive path in the future.
