I've said it alot here during some reviews, but this time I mean it- this will be a really super quick review. I'm pressed
for time, and if I don't get this done here, now at 4am Saturday morning, it will never get done, so let me quickly breeze
through the latest effort from the fine and cheery folks from Victory Pro Wrestling.
Victory Pro Wrestling
3/2
From Centereach, Long Island, NY
Ring Announcer: Jerry Fitzwater
Attendance: 200+ or so, I really didn't do a thorough count.
First off, before I go through the matches, let me say, there is some fan who goes to these shows known as "Disco Pete." I'm
sure he's a nice guy and all and doesn't realize what he's doing, but throughout the show he'd run around the building and
start dancing. It was stupid and you'd laugh, but it stole heat from the matches. There's nothing you can really do but have
a wrestler go out there and slap him right in the fucking jaw, but I did feel bad for the wrestlers working hard in the ring,
only to be upstaged by this guy.
JMS d. Rocksha 337
This was a quick three minute match. Rocksha hit his trademark senton, but wasn't able to hit his patented "Rock-Bottom" or
"Rocksha Stunner" in this match. JMS wins after a spear. Why a 100 pound kid is pinning guys after a spear is beyond me.
Postmatch: One of the VPW students ran out attacked & put the beatdown on JMS. Heel beatdowns would be the story of this
show, and it really wasn't needed in this match.
As far as this match, nothing much developed, but I'd like to see Rocksha get an integral role in the company, even if it
would only pop me.
"2 Cocky" Kevin Matthews came out next. He got good crowd heat, with the crowd informing him that he "sucks". Kevin said he
wasn't happy with the reaction he got at the last show. He also said that he wants a match to prove his superiority over the
VPW locker room. This brought out The Grim Reefer w/Don Tony aka Anthony Deblasi.
Reefer, dressed in sweatpants, got in Kevin's face, accepting the challenge for later. Matthews said it was nice for Reefer
to be wearing his "business casual" clothes. Ha. However, it's sad when Reefer's sweatpants are better gear than 90% of the
VPW students on the show. Reefer said he'd take on Kevin later on tonight and told Kevin to go play around with Danny Demanto
in the locker room. It's funny, despite having a year of WWE developmental experience under his belt, coupled in with taking
his career serious, and wrestling in a different region of the country, Kevin Matthews will always wind up being lumped with
Danny Demanto.
Deblasi also got on the mic here and had a funny line. Deblasi said no one knows who Kevin is. Well that's a great way to put
over a guy on your roster. Especially a guy in your main event. However, it did lead to a funny bit, where Deblasi went to
people in the crowd and said "Knock Knock" and when the people responded "Who's there?" Deblasi would say "Kevin", which got
a "Kevin Who?" response, which Deblasi quickly retorted with "Exactly." It worked really good on the first person Deblasi
used the line on, but it quickly fizzled out by the time he got to the fourth person.
The promo in reality should've ended here, but we had more shit going on. Reefer went to the back, leaving Deblasi out there
alone with Kevin, which really made no sense. Kevin attacked Deblasi and somehow handcuffs got into the mix. Kevin attacked
Deblasi for a long 3 minutes. Reefer finally made the save. I didn't get this, why would Reefer leave Deblasi alone, and then
why did it take him so long to get out there to save his manager? Maybe he was playing around in the locker room with Demanto
or something.
I thought the first half of the promo was good but the second part of it didn't make much sense.
Eclipse (Jay Delta & Xandar Page) w/Jack of Hearts d. Bison Bravado & Boogalou
PREMATCH: Boogalou told the crowd that his brother, Low Ryda, was injured and unable to compete. Boogalou said he'd wrestle a
handicapped match. However, Bison Bravado came out and said his partner wasn't here either, as his partner was out at KFC.
Bison said he just wanted a match, but before Boogalou could give him an answer, both members of Eclipse attacked Boogalou &
Bison from behind, signalling the start of the bout.
I don't know what it is about Eclipse, but they seem to have gotten worse everytime I've seen them. They just looked lost in
the ring with Boogalou & Bison. It's a shame too, cause Page has some potential. When Boogalou & Bison were on offense the
match seemed to flow, but when it was Eclipse's turn on offense it just didn't look right.
Boogalou hit a musclebuster on one member of Eclipse towards the end of the match. Bison Bravado hit an Overdrive on the
other member. However, the ref tended to the Eclipse member that Boogalou laid out. This set up time for some random VPW
student jobber to run out and hit Bison with a briefcase. The ref then turned around and counted Bison down for the 1-2-3.
This match was ok, but again, a heel running out wasn't necessarry. This was the third heel attack on the show, and this was
only the second match. Bad booking. Plus, no one cares about these random jobber wrestlers running out and doing attacks.
Learn how to wrestle first.
Jerry Fitzwater came out to do a promo. He introduced us to Daffney to a nice reaction. Daffney screamed a few times and said
how happy she was to be in the house. All of a sudden, April Hunter & JD Michaels, in the heel role tonight, came out.
Daffney said she was the ref for the mixed tag match tonight, which both April & JD were part of. April said she heard enough
and said "refs are meant to be seen and not heard, bitch!" Burn. Daffney reminded that she was going to be referee tonight
and said she wanted the match to start now. This led to...
Danny Demanto & Alicia d. April Hunter & JD Michaels
Special Ref: Daffney
PREMATCH: In this long prematch segment, we saw tons of back & forth mic work between Danny Demanto & April Hunter. Danny
hinted that April Hunter had a penis a few times, saying that she seemed to have extra weight in the groinal region. He
hinted that she was really a man. Danny then called JD Michaels a "Fake HBK" and the crowd started a pretty good "FAKE BK"
chant. I guess that's to be expected when you look exactly like HBK, have the same last name as him, wear the same gear as
him, wrestle like him, and have similiar tattoos as him. In JD's defense, at least he does it better than Johnny Thunder.
After the crowd was finished with the "FAKE BK" chant, Danny says he didn't know if he should light them up, because he was
afraid April would melt because she was fake, and had plastic surgeries. At least that's what it looked like he was going
with that line. April & JD came back with some fat jokes, but I'm sure everyone already realized that Danny is a slob. After
getting some pretty good crowd heat with their promo work, the match started.
Danny & April started the match off, but April quickly tagged out to JD. Later on in the match, JD and April would double up
on Danny. One point of the match saw JD hit a beautiful standing dropkick to Danny's fat face. Alicia & April would go at it
in the match, with Alicia hitting her trademark dropkicks. April would "man-up", for lack of a better term, on Alicia, until
Danny hot tagged in.
However, before the hot tag, April spit in Danny's face. Danny said now he has AIDS. April responded by cursing at the crowd
and mooning the crowd. Classy. Danny, not to be one upped by phlegm, ran in the ring and spanked April in the ass. You know
that was a life long dream for him.
After tagging in, Danny cleaned house, but for some reason went for a small package on JD. It was the ugliest small package
over. There's a reason why fat guys don't do small man moves.
The finish of this match saw JD knock himself out with a chair, as he swung, missed, had the chair bounce off the ropes and
knock himself out. Alicia DDT'ed April, setting up Danny for the hogsplash, for the clean 1-2-3 victory.
Fun little match here. I guess this also ends the feud here.
INTERMISSION
$1 beers are always a good thing. That's why this review is gonna be short, cause I gotta wake up early tomorrow and need to
sleep this off!
Mack Daddy Flexx & Richie Tyler d. Papadon & Sabotage
I thought this match had good pairings, as Sabotage/Tyler paired off nicely, and Flex did a good job carrying Papadon. This
match went to the outside for a bit, where both teams brawled. This set up Jay Static's appearance on the show, as he
declared himself the special guest ring enforcer. For those who don't know Static has a shattered knee and is unable to
compete, hence his role here tonight.
With the match back in the ring, Flex powerslammed Papadon. Flex came back with a double clothesline on Papadon & Sabotage.
Papadon broke up the flow with a kick to the nuts. However, Tyler was able to pin Papadon for the clean win.
POSTMATCH: Tyler disappeared somehow, which set up Papadon & Sabotage to orchestrate their plan. With Flex having his back to
Static, as he was facing Papadon & Sabotage, Static attacked Flex with his crutch. This set up a 3 man hate crime in the
ring, as the two white guys w/the latino beat up the black guy. Someone dig up Johnny Cochran for Flex, because he got a case
here!
Static then cut a promo saying he was upset that he didn't get fan comments on his Myspace page when he got injured. For
once, Static showed some natural charisma, and I think this heel role in VPW will be good for him. While this was going on,
that Disco Pete fan ran towards the entrance way and herbed out Papadon. If Papadon cracked that dude in the mouth, I think
we would all be better for it. However, I guess Papadon thought he had this hate crime lawsuit pending, and decided not to
attack 2 people in the same night.
Again, another heel beat down on the show. This one was necessary and established Static as a player and builds a natural
feud with Flex. However, it was watered down a bit when 3834838 heel beatdowns already took place before this.
Deranged d. Azraiel & Jamie Van Lemer
One name didn't belong with the other two. Not too hard to guess which one here, as Lemer looked like he blew several spots
in the match. If he didn't, then I don't get why after some sloppiness, why Deranged just lit this kid up. For a guy under
150 pounds, Deranged throws some mean fucking chops, as he just caved in Lemer's chest.
This match started off good enough, with some quick spots. Deranged was on Lemer's shoulders, than thrown on to Azraiel's
shoulders, which Deranged quickly reacted to by huranacaraning Azraiel. Az & JVL went to the floor, and Deranged teased a
dive. The match saw AZ & JVL double up on Deranged, but they weren't on the same page, as they started going at it too.
After hitting a 619 on Azraiel, Deranged lit Lemer up with chops. Deranged then finished Lemer off with his flipping
powerbomb (Sky iz blue) for the clean 1-2-3 pinfall victory.
For what it was, this was a decent & entertaining match. However, Lemer wasn't needed in this match and took away and didn't
add to it. They should've left it as Azraiel vs Deranged as originally advertised. I don't think Lemer was ready to be in the
ring with these type of guys, although he seems to have a good look going for himself.
Eug Perversion & DC Diamond w/ Jimmy Time d.
Scotty Rio & Johnny Suburban w/ Jack O’Hearts
This was a VPW student match. There is still alot to learn. These guys are all nice guys out of the ring, but in the ring
they are not so nice to watch. Get some ring gear. I'm sure the people who came out to see them are thrilled but someone like
me who is so fucking jaded & seen so much, I can't take you seriously when you're wearing the same clothes that the fans are
wearing.
John takes the pin here, and the crowd seemed happy with Peversion & Diamond winning. Again, nothing personal, but this match
was not good.
Main Event
Kevin Matthews vs Grim Reefer w/Anthony Deblasi went to a Double Countout
Good match, shitty finish.
This match deserves more than those four words above, so I'll add more. Kevin used his power in this match and did a good job
grounding Reefer. However, when Reefer got on fire he was able to control Matthews with his speed. Both guys eventually went
outside, brawled a bit, fell down, and were counted out. A finish like this does not make me want to come back. When closing
a show, you want to give the fans something good at the end to remember the show by, and this finish wasn't it.
For what it was, these two had really good chemistry together. I'd like to see what they could do in an unrestricted
environment, and I'd like to see a clear cut winner. After seeing this match, I'm excited to see what they'll do at Pro
wrestling Hybrid's 4/13 show, where there is a Falls Count Anywhere Match between the 2 booked.
Final McWord
Yes this is a short review, so let me hit the Positives & Negatives real quick:
Positives
-The crowd really was into everything. The crowd was vocal for everything, so no matter what I write here, it don't mean shit because the paying customers will be back and enjoyed the event.
-Matthews/Reefer, the mixed tag, Az/Deranged/JVL, & Rocksha will help sell this DVD. All of those matches were entertaining and stood out among the others.
-Another good sized crowd for a show with a lower budget than other NY shows.
Negatives
-Lazy and/or Uninspired Booking- too much of the same thing on this show. Too many heel beatdowns. However, I liked that there were alot of clean finishes on the show, but...
-Finish of the main- A double count out is weak, especially when refs during other matches ignored low blows, blind tags, and other things that would usually cause a DQ. It was a cheap finish and should've ended differently.
-The students aren't getting any better- seriously, what the hell are they doing during training? At least buy some gear so you look the part. These poor kids would get destroyed in front of a non VPW crowd, and a few of them have when they wrestled elsewhere. (ABC & WSU) The students should add to the show, not take away from it. After this show, you're left saying, well the show was fun and all, but the promotion would be so much better if they cut the students out. The students in reality should be better and be able to be used in significant roles. As of now, that's not possible.
However, all in all, the show was fun, and I had a good time. Sure you an analyze everything but sometimes it's about drinking $1 beers and giving the finger to Demanto when he's in the ring. VPW has a nice little thing going here. The booking could be tightened a bit so not every match is the same. I'd also like to see someone light a spark under the students because they don't look like they get "it" yet. Nice guys and all, but I don't think they are ready for real crowds.
I did like how Flexxx, Static, Reefer, & Kevin got significant roles in the company after this show. The one thing is, with all these fucking heel beatdowns, who's the number 1 face in VPW? It would be Reefer by default, but then who's number 2? Really no-body right now.
Still, fun night out and good effort from everyone involved.
Overall
A nice night of NY Wrestling action.
Stay tuned to the DOI for more.
wow, I'm really gonna be wiped for tomorrow's doubleheader of shows, as it's 5 AM now!
