RF Video Shoot Interview Reviews

What's up everyone and welcome to a big combined shoot interview review. Recently, I had the opportunity to check out alot of new shoot interviews, which were conducted by RF Video. Instead of flooding the site with too many reviews, I decided to present you a different type of review by recapping four shoot interviews here. The following will review the following shoot interviews:
Rugged Ron Garvin
Kamala
Butch Reed
Lanny Poffo

I should say before I continue, that I am a bigger fan of watching shoots, rather than watching show tapes, because it's always interesting and cool to hear the real stories behind the wrestlers. They are also alot easier to recap as well! Anyway, here are my reviews:

Garvins tone of voice in this interview comes out truthful and straight up. Garvin, in this interview, comes off just as having a normal conversation. He kind of came off like a "grampa" figure, as it seemed like he was telling stories like the way you would tell stories to your grandkids.

Personally, being a pro-WWF fan, while Garvin was peaking elsewhere in his career, I got to learn alot about him and his career. I enjoy wrestling history, so this interview was cool to watch, as I found out alot of stuff that I didn't know before. Just like his wrestling nickname "Hands of Stone", Garvin comes off as "Voice of Stone", as he gets to the point straight away. He does go off-topic several times, which makes this interview better.

My favorite stories in this interview were Garvin winning the title from Flair, his Dusty Rhodes stories and joining the WWF. Garvin goes into detail on all three topics.

Overall- this interview may come off dry to some, but you can tell he wasn't hiding anything. I'd really only recommend this interview for people interested in the NWA, Ron Garvin and people looking to know more about wrestling history. This interview doesn't have the pizazz or "kill" factor, that other shoots have, but it was still interesting to watch.

This was easily one of the best shoot interviews I've seen, and deserves a full review in itself. This was my favorite shoot out of the four I'm reviewing today. Kamala is well known all over the world, and after watching this shoot, you feel for the guy and respect Kamala even more. From this shoot, we get that Kamala never was interested in playing politics. In fact, he'd rather drive a truck then deal with the crap in wrestling. And he did just that, as he talks about how he left wrestling several times to go back to driving trucks.

Kamala talked about all the politics he faced through the years, but said that he always loved Hulk Hogan. He said that Hogan always looked out for him, especially in WCW, where Kamala said that Eric Bischoff is an asshole and didn't know what he was doing. Kamala even added that Hulk Hogan was the best champion while he was wrestling.

The only time Kamala really gets angry is when talking about Abdullah the Butcher. Kamala says that Abby was jealous of him, and that Abby always wanted to be the only black man in Japan. Going to Japan was just a money opportunity for Kamala, so he didn't care being there either way. He told alot of stories about how Abby tried to make Kamala look bad, and Kamala expressed his disdain about Abby.

Kamala comes off like a simple man, who just wanted to make money and enjoy life. He talked about what he liked in the wrestling business, and also how he was screwed. Kamala told one story, about how he was wrestling Undertaker during a Summerslam main event match, and when it all came down to it, Kamala got paid $17,000 and Undertaker got paid $250,000. Kamala said he saw Pat Pattersons briefcase with all the financial figures in it one day, and that's how he knows. He thinks that the WWF looked at him as a big southern black man, who wouldn't realize it.

Like the above story, Kamala talks about money very openly. He talks about some territories where he went home hungry every night and he told some stories about how he was doing well.

Overall- this is an interview for any wrestling fan. This is one of the top shoot interview's I've seen, and I've seen alot of shoots. Kamala really came off good here, and you will get so into the interview, you won't even realize that 2+ hours passed by. I definitely highly recommend this interview.

This was an interesting interview. Butch Reed really has no problem ripping anyone in this interview, as well as putting over people he likes. Butch talks about the famous Honky Tonk Man IC title reign, and how Butch was actually supposed to be the IC champ and not the HTM. Butch gets in full detail when talking about this and gets emotional. He also describes the fallout between him and Vince McMahon.

Butch really gets into the racism in wrestling. He talks about all his experiences as a black wrestler, and tells a story about his run-in with the KKK, as he beat up one KKK member in California, after a KKK member instigated trouble with him.

Overall- I definitely recommend this interview. While Kamala is the best out of the four interviews I'm reviewing today, Butch was a close number 2 and was brutally honest as can be, when talking about everything. I was surprised with alot of the racism stories, and how much the race card was talked about, but at least it didn't get to Al Sharpton levels.

This was like watching 2 interviews in one. Lanny Poffo went out to make this one of the best shoot interviews ever. While I don't think it was one of the top 10, it was certainly interesting. The topic list above is not even half of what Lanny talks about. Watching Lanny talk, I felt like I was talking to Simon Diamond, because the man comes off so intelligent, and described all his thoughts and ideas in a way that any idiot could understand.

A big topic in this interview of course is The Macho Man Randy Savage. Lanny talks about his famous brother, and you can see he respects him and loves him. Lanny answered some questions about his brother and said that some questions would be better off asking Randy, rather than Lanny.

Some of the things I liked about this interview was Poffo talking about the Honky Tonk Man. When asked about HTM calling himself the greatest Intercontinetal Champion of all time, Poffo said, "HTM stop, you're insulting alot of people there." Lanny also talked about Elizabeth's death, and indirectly blamed it on Lex Luger. He said that many people called the Macho Man overprotective of Liz, when they were married, and he said if Luger was as protective of Liz, as Randy, then Liz would be alive today. Can't argue with him, based on all the facts I know.

This interview is four hours long, and if you have a spare four hours, you'll enjoy the first 3 hours. The last hour of this interview is Poffo closing it off. RF Video asked Poffo for any final words, an Poffo went an hour describing his life now. Poffo reiterated at the end, and throughout the interview that 1. He is not gay, and 2. He hates smoking and cigarettes. The last hour is not about wrestling and comes off like a public service announcement for an anti-smoking campaign.

Overall- this is a great interview for anyone looking to find out what the WWF was like not only in the '80s, but in the '90s as well. Lanny does come off as a true genius in this, and even admits to using gimmick more than talent in the ring, but that's what makes him a great wrestler, and not a great worker. The first three hours is very solid, but the last hour is a bore, so I'd recommend this interview, but I'd also recommend turning it off once Lanny goes into his anti-smoking hour rant.
