Taking a walk down memory lane, as we look back at another J-Cup show...
JCW J-Cup 2001 McTape Review
What up DOI maniacs and welcome to another McTape Review. This time I reviewed JCW's 2nd
installment of the J-Cup, from 2001. This is considered one of the best independent shows
by many. Will it hold up in this review 3 years later? Come re-live JCW's 2001 J-CUP...
JCW
2nd Annual J-Cup
7/23/2001
From Lodi, NJ
Ring Announcer: Scott Matthews with a bad ass beard
Commentator: Mike Burns and Mike Spillane from Pro Wrestling Illustrated
Tape starts off with some Mudvayne sporting the JCW logo.
The 16 participants in this years J-Cup are introduced to the live crowd. This is a good touch to
see everyone before the actual tournament takes place. It's funny seeing what eeveryone looks
like from 3 years ago. You can see some famous faces watching the show in the crowd as well.
A Jersey J-CUP chant breaks out. Yea I was suprised too!
Scott Matthews announced that Homicide will not be able to appear due to his brother getting
shot. He wishes the best for Homicide.
FIRST ROUND MATCHES
(2000 J-Cup Winner) Judas Young d. Ryan Wing
Jesus Christ, Ryan Wing must've been on some really bad steroids back in the day. His muscular
look is solid, but it's covered by acne. That is some bad shit there! Young gets the advantage
early in this match with some mat wrestling and take downs. He gets a few 2 counts. Wing then
bounced Young off the ropes, and Young reversed a hiptoss into an abdominal stretch. Nice.
Wing then does the same thing to Young, and Young gets out of it. Both men get up trade
some moves, and try to dropkick each other at the same time. Wing gets up, clotheslines
Young down, but instead of going for the pin, lifts him back up, bodyslams him and drops
a legdrop for 2. The announcers commentate on the shitty ring ropes. You can tell they
weren't too tight when Young looked like he was going to flip over the ropes after getting
tossed into the corner. Back to the action, Wing was going on the offensive with a spine buster
for 2. Young whips Wing to the ropes, and Young jumps up, but Wing kicks him in the nuts.
Ref Paul Turner lets it go. Wing bounces Young again to the ropes, but Young kicks him in the
gut and hits a butterfly face slam for the quick 3 count. Very basic match.
(Then JCW Cruiserweight Champion) Dave Greco d. Supreme Lee Great
I don't know how it's possible, but Greco's ears have gotten bigger from 3 years ago.
Ref Hanson also lost alot of hair. SLG is representing WXW in this tournament. He has an
angrier look and flashier outfit then he does today. He looks like a shiny piece of Juicyfruit
in his glittery yellow outfit. Both guys did alot of quick chain wrestling, before SLG got
the advantage with a back suplex. SLG then hit an overhead suplex for 2. SLG then slammed,
then dropped a quick elbow on Greco for 2. SLG picked up Greco, but Greco countered him
with a side leg lariat. Greco then suplexed SLG, then picked him up and dropped him with a
back suplex for 2. Greco goes to pick up SLG, but SLG nutshots him, for our second penis punch
in 2 matches. SLG gets the advantage and suplexes Greco various times, including hitting
a big exploder. He tries to cover him cockily various times, but only gets 2's. SLG looks like
he is going to have Greco beat, but Greco jumps up and flatliners him for 3. Very quick match,
but lots of action. This would be a great TV match, something SLG knows alot about.
Low Ki d. Xavier
This was THE feud of 2001. This fed really got big in UCW, which even turned out a 2001 Match
of the Year, with Low Ki d. Xavier in a big time ladder match for the UCW Title. 2001 really
was Low Ki's year, as he won the Super 8 as well. Solid booking here to have 2 quick matches
before going to these 2. Xavier went to gorilla press slam Ki, but Ki got otu of it, sent
him down to the mat with a dropkick, and kicked Xavier in the chest twice, then fucking KICKED
his head off. Surprisingly, that wasn't enough to win. Ki then went for the Ki Krusher, but
Xavier got out of it, and whipped Ki to the ropes. Xavier hit a Tito Santana like forearm
to Ki's head. Xavier then hit a northern lights suplex for 2. The way both guys hit the ropes
and turnbuckles, you can see how bad the ring was. Man that was a shit ring. Low Ki hit his
jumping kick to Xaviers chest, then put Xavier away with Ki Klutch submission.
FAST match. I mean these guys have gone 30 minutes before. Then again, if you get kicked in
the head a few times, then put in the Ki Krusher, I guess you can always go down fast.
Dixie d. Felipe The Pool Boy w/Frankie Fuji
Frankie Fuji is none other than Frankie V. Felipe isn't around today. I can see why. In this
match, we see a younger Robert Payes sitting in the audience! Surprisingly, he's not decked
out in leather pants! I guess jeans went out in 2004 lol. Dixie looks very "wholesome" in
this match. This was mostly a comedy match. The match started off with both guys trying
to do amateur wrestling. Felipe was trying to like the CSC, but forgot the talent and
charisma. Dixie put Felipe in an armbar, but Felipe whipped Dixe to the ropes. As Dixie
hit the horrible ring ropes, Frankie Fuji pulled Dixie's legs. Wow those ropes were horrible.
Felipe then put Dixie in a sleeper, but Dixie got out of it and fired in some right hands
to Felipe's face. Dixie then hit a nice top rope fist drop on Felipe. Frankie Fuji goes to
interfere, and holds Dixie. He gives his cane to Felipe. Felipe goes to hit Dixie, but you know
the deal- Dixie gets out, and Felipe hits his own manager, and Dixie rolls up Felipe from
behind.
Bah match, more of a transitional match for the tournament.
John Shane then came out. Shane laughs and calls Frankie Fuji the biggest a-hole he knows. He
tells Frankie he will get him. Shane then runs to the back. Ok then.
Joel Maximo d. Jose Maximo
Crowd was feeling this match, as a huge SAT and Holy Shit chants broke out. Match starts
off with a handshake. The Sat get in a collar and elbow lock up, and both start to mat
wrestle, with Joel getting the advantage with a leg scissor. These guys trade some
1 counts. They then go for a test of strength, and Jose gets the advantage after a kick
to the gut. He gives Joel a standing 'rana, and the match goes to the outside. Jose then
hits a tope con hilo onto Joel. Man this ring was awful for such an event like this.
After more fast wrestling, Joel puts Jose into a version of a bow and arrow. Joel then
started pounding on Jose. Jose then armdrags Joel down. Joel blocks a rana, then powerbombs
Jose down. Joel then hits a version of a cop killa on Jose and gets the win.
Another short first round match. Match was a little sloppy, and you can see how much better
the SAT has gotten today.
Queenan Creed d. White Lotus
Both men start with trading submissions. Lotus puts Creed in an armbar. Creed gets out, but
winds up being armdragged twice, and Lotus puts Creed in another armbar. Creed then got out,
and hit some arm drags of his own. Both men kept wrestling the other one on the mat, and tried
applying pressure holds. After a couple of switches, Lotus hit two rolling suplexes. Lotus
goes for a third, but Creed reverses it, and sits on Lotus's legs for the three count. Another
quick first round match.
Shark Boy d. Dylan Kage
Kage is from today's ACW fame. Kage got the advantage early. He whips Sharkboy to the rope, and
slams Shark Boy down. Shark Boy rebounds and fights off Kage, and bites him in the ass,
Bushwhacker style. Kage gets out of the ring but comes back, and suplexes, then german
suplexes then fisherman suplexes Shark Boy for 2. Sharkboy fights it off and hits a diamond
dust, and gets the win in 2 minutes. Yes, a 2 minute match in the J-Cup.
Mike Quackenbush d. Amazing Red
Red was a rookie at the time. Crowd was hot for this match. Red put Quack in a straight jacket
submission right away, but broke it for no reason. Quack then put Red in the cerebral lock.
Jesus that's nuts. He lets him go. Why let someone out of a submission? Both wrestlers try
getting the others left arm, but Red bails on that and puts Quack in a face lock. After
more wrestling, Quack has Red on the outside. He then hits a big body press from the ring
to the floor on Red. Quack brings Red back in the ring and hits 2 victim kicks. Red hits the
west coast pop on Quack for 2. He goes for another one, but Quack catches him and hits
a running tombstone. Wow. Red keeps fighting in this match, and gets Quack down. He hits
a Red Star Press for 2. Quack then hits an atomic bomb, into a snow plex, into a german
suplex with a bridge for 2. Holy fuck. Red looked like he was out, but threw a desperate
huranacarana on Quack. Red then went for a dragon sleeper, but Quack fought out of it, and
hit the Quackendriver for 3.
Easily the best first round match of the tournament. I'd like to see this match again with both
guys 3 years smarter and 3 years better.
SECOND ROUND MATCHES
Low Ki d. Joel Maximo
The announcers start talking about fatigue. Good insight there. These guys lock up right away
and walk all over the ring. They break, but get right back into it again. Both men look at
each other, and Ki just kicks him in the face. Ki snapmares Joel, then hits a victim kick.
Joel gets the upperhand however, and throws Ki to the outside. He goes to do a suicide dive
on the outside, but Ki kicks him in the head. Low Ki brings him back in the ring, and gets
Joel in the dragon sleeper. Joel won't tap, so Ki kicks him in the back. Ki puts him again
in the dragon sleeper, but Joel won't tap. Joel fights out of it with a back suplex. Joel then
brought Low Ki down and worked him over with a headlock. Joel then turned this into a standing
wristlock on Low Ki. Both men then got up, and Ki whipped Joel to the turnbuckle. Ki did his
big crouching tiger hidden dragon kick to Joels face. Both guys then teased their finisher moves
several times. Ki finally gets Joel into the Ki Klutch for the submission.
Good match, and better than all the first round matches.
Mike Quackenbush d. (Then JCW Cruiserweight Champion) Dave Greco w/Lollipop
For some reason, Greco had a manager in this round, when he didn't have one in the first round.
Quack starts the match by grabbing Grecos ear. He just did this to toy with him.
Quack hits some fast lucha moves, but Greco is able to reverse it for a 2 count. Quack gets
back up and rolls Greco for 2. Both men get up and stand off. Greco hammerlocks Quack
down and then drives 3 knees into Quacks left arm. Greco goes to suplex Quack but Quack gets
out of it, and dropkicks Greco out of the shitty ring. Quack then jumps out of the ring and
tope con hilo's Greco. Back in the ring, Quack hits the Tempest for 2. Quack goes for another
one, but Greco reverses it and gets a 2 of his own. Greco then germans suplexes Quack, and
Quack folds up like an accordian. These guys exchange more moves, and Quack just slaps Greco
in the face down for 2. Greco gets the mousetrap cradle for 3, after ducking a Greco forearm.
One of Greco's better matches.
Shark Boy d. (2000 J-Cup Winner) Judas Young
The announcers talk about Judas Young's rest time, since he was in the first match of the first
round. Both guys exchange some submissions, and mat wrestle. Judas gets a fireman carry, but
Shark Boy is able to put Judas in a dragon sleeper. Judas fights out, and both men trade
some armdrags. Both men trade more holds, and then both miss elbowing each other. Shark Boy
then bites Judas's ass, but Judas throws him out of the ring. Judas then jumps off the top
and planchas Shark Boy. Back in the ring, Young hits a hiptoss sit out slam for 2.
Shark Boy gets up and is able to bulldog Young for 2. Young hits a guillotine leg drop, and
follows it with a falcon arrow for 2. Young goes for his finisher, but has it blocked.
Shark Boy then mounts Young in the corner and opens up with 10 punches. He goes for another
bulldog, but Young throws him into the corner. Young then neckbreakers Shark Boy for 2. Young
whips Shark Boy into the corner, but Sharkboy jumps to the rope and suckers Young in.
Shark Boy then hits the diamond dust to eliminate to prevent a J-Cup repeat for Young. Good
match.
Queenan Creed d. Dixie
Both wrestlers feel each other out. Dixie attacks Creeds left arm with some strikes and knees,
then works on the arm into a submission. Dixie just kept attacking the left arm. Creed powered
out of the submission and struck Dixie in the face with elbows and fists. Dixie then goes
for a rana and gets it for 2. Dixie then goes to the top for a body splash, but Creed catches
him and only gets a 2. Dixie keeps fighting back and picks up several near falls with various
pinning combinations. Dixie went for a crucifix, and Creed sat up and hooked Dixie's leg for
the win.
Very short and very sloppy match. It looked like Creed was going to hurt Dixie with some
of the moves he was doing. It was kind of like Dixie was like I want to have a career so I'll
just lay down for 3 against this bum lol.
THIRD ROUND MATCHES
Low Ki d. Shark Boy
Low Ki gets the advantage first and puts Shark Boy in several submissions. Announcers point out
that Shark Boy is wrestling 2 times out of the last three matches on the show, so fatigue
is a factor. Shark Boy gets out of Ki's submissions, and armdrags Ki down and stretches
Ki's left arm. Shark Boy kept biting Low Ki's fingers while in the hold. I have heard people
say that Low Ki never sells. I think that is ridiculous, and look no further than this match
to see Ki get animated when in pain. Ki worked out of Shark Boy's submissions, and put
Shark Boy in a Boston Crab. Ki then put Shark Boy in the Ki Klutch, but Shark Boy wiggled out.
Low Ki then put Shark Boy in a version of the camel clutch. Shark Boy gets out of that too,
and gets an atomic drop off. Ki knocks Shark Boy down, and sets him up for his two kicks
to the chest, and kick to the head combo. Ki then goes for his big kick to
the head, but Shark Boy ducked. Shark Boy gets the advantage, and then goes for his diamond dust.
Low Ki reverses the diamond dust and turns it into the Ki Klutch for the tap out victory.
Good short match.
Queenan Creed d. Mike Quackenbush
Quack goes on the offensive early and gets Creed in a rocking cradle submission. He spins
Creed all over the ring. Quack then puts Creed in a camel clutch, but Creed won't tap.
Quack then puts Creed in the gory gallows but Creed still won't tap. Creed gets up and
superkicks Quack in the jaw. Creed then puts Quack in an armbar. Creed just kept attacking
Quack's already injured left arm. I don't understand why wrestlers let go of submission
holds if their opponent can't get out of them. That seems to be one of the things both
men did in this tournament. Creed put Quack in another armbar, but breaks it by himself.
Creed then tries to pull Quack's arm out of its socket. Quack gets the rope to break it.
Both men get up and double clothesline each other back down. Both men get up and Quack fires
in some kicks to Creed. Quack hits an atomic drop, then perfect plexes Creed down for 2.
Creed then powerbombs Quack for 2. Back up, Quack then ddts Creed for 2. Creed hits the slop
drop for 2. Quack goes for the Quackendriver, but Creed reverses it with a mahistrol cradle
for the pin. I'm sorry Creed does not belong in the finals of any major indy tournament,
especially with guys like Quack, Red and others in this.
NON TOURNAMENT MATCH
Julio Dinero d. Rik Ratchet w/Andrew Anderson
Julio would've probably been better in the tournament than in a non tournament match.
Rik Ratchet comes out to Ric Flairs music and in a robe like Ric Flair. He does not unfortunately
come out with Ric Flairs talent. Before the match, both guys exchanged barbs. Dinero just
goes ape shit on Ratchet and hits him with some chops. He then kicks him in the face, and Ratchet
does the Flair flop. Ratchet gets up and gets a fist to the face. Dinero then sends Ratchet's
head into the turnbuckle 10 times. Ratchet and Dinero exachange some chops, and Dinero back
drops Ratchet twice. Ratchets chest is red from the chops. Ratchets back is red from the
ring ropes. What a mess. Ratchet goes on the outside, and lures Dinero into an Andrew
Anderson beating. These guys then fight on the outside. Dinero gets the advantage and
chucks Rathet into the fifth row. Ratchet then lowblows Dinero to save time. These guys
then brawl all over the building. Dinero hiptosses Ratchet into a garbage can. Anderson
attacks Dinero from the back again, and throws him into the post. Anderson starts
attacking Dinero in the ring. Ratchet brings out a big rubber ball. Dinero gets it from
him and goes to wack him, but hits the ref instead. Anderson comes in the ring and spinebusts
Dinero down. Ratchet goes for the cover but only gets two. Dinero gets a chair and wacks
Anderson with it. Dinero hits the "near death experience" on Ratchet on top of the chair
for the win.
Good comedy match to take a break from the tournament. Match was longer than most of the
tournament matches, to give the finalists a breather.
FOURTH ROUND MATCH
TO become the 2001 J-CUP Champion
Low Ki d. Queenan Creed to win the 2001 J-Cup
Both guys stare each other down. Low Ki goes right to work and kicks Creed all around.
Creed gets kicked all over the body. Low Ki goes to kick Creed for the tenth time, but
Creed catches a kick and puts Ki in an ankle lock. Creed then puts Ki in a leg scissor
and starts to work on Ki's right leg. Low Ki breaks up Creed's flow with an enzuiguri.
At this point in the show, you can see random people holding up the ring posts so the ring don't
collapse. Oh man. Creed goes back to work on Ki with a standing figure four. Ki kicks out
of it. Creed goes for some pinfalls on Ki but can't get the win. Low Ki's right leg was
hurting him and he was hobbling around. Creed then puts Ki in a figure four. Ki after 2 minutes
of being in the hold, powers out of it. Low Ki goes for his jumping kick, but Creed counters
with a super kick. Both guys look tired. Ki finally hits his leaping kick, and kicks Creed
out of the ring. Ki's right leg hurt him even worse after hitting the kick. Ki puts on the
Ki Klutch but Creed breaks out of it, and gets K into a Texas clover leaf. Ki gets the
ropes, but Cred brings Ki into the middle of the ring. Low Ki powers out of it, and hits the
Ki Krusher. Ki then puts Creed into the Ki Klutch, and Creed taps out. Low wins the match.
Despite Creeds other matches on this show, this match was really good. The match he had with
Dixie was black/white with this match. Low Ki was the man of 2001 and this was a great
victory.
POSTMATCH: The other participants put Low Ki on their shoulders. JOhn Shane comes out. Shane
congratulates Low Ki. Ricky O comes out. Ricky thanks the losers of the tournament. Ricky then
gives the trophy to Low Ki. A big JCW chant breaks out. John Shane gets the mic again.
Shane talks about Ki's Super 8 win. He turns it over to Ki. A Low Ki chant breaks out.
Low Ki says he respects the other 15 men in the tournament and he is proud to win this
contest. Ki puts over the people in the tournament. Ki thanks the crowd as well. Shark Boy
and Creed lift Ki onto their shoulders and Ki celebrates with the trophy.
Final McWord
A nicely booked tournament. It was a little less than 3 hours long, meaning you didn't get
worn out. The first round matches were pretty short, but they served their purpose. The Dinero
vs Ratchet match served its purpose. I don't think this tournament matched up to the 2001
Super 8, but most shows don't. This definitely was a close second to the Super 8. The talent
in this tournament was incredible. The only really bad thing about this was the shitty ring.
The J-Cup is one of the most prestigious tournaments on the indy scene. Winning the J-Cup
is usually a stepping stone for bigger things. Judas Young won it and had a large push on the
Jersey scene. Low Ki won it, and wound up being the first ROH champion. Reckless Youth won it
to solidify his status as King of the Indies. Jay Lethal has won it and looks like to be on
the verge of a big ROH push, as well as one of the best wrestlers on the northeast today.
