What's up everyone and welcome to another McTape/DVD Review. This time I check out "RAVENS RULES" which is one of the latest
DVD offerings fom 3PW. This show featured a Heavyweight Championship title switch, as well as the dawning of Raven
as the new 3PW Commissioner. Please keep in mind that this show took place on 11/22/03, when Raven was very hot on
the indy scene. With that said, here's the review:
3PW
11/22/03
From the ECW Arena in Philadelphia, PA
"Ravens Rules"
Referees: Finnegan and Molineaux
Ring Announcer: Bob Artese
Commentators: Gerry Strauss and Mike Winner
CJ O'Doyle d. Ricky Vega
CJ hit a huge top rope leg drop in this match, splattering Vega's body all over the ring. The finish of this match saw
CJ O'Doyle hit a nice lariat on Ricky Vega, for the clean 1-2-3.
This was a solid opener, and one of the better CJ O'Doyle 3PW matches, which in the long haul,
led to CJ getting a push in 3PW.
Monsta Mack d. Roadkill
Monsta Mack hit a huge powerslam in this match early on, but that wouldn't stop him from being attacked by Roadkill.
Roadkill
literally squashed Mack on the outside of the ring, as he splashed Mack into a guardrail. Towards the later stages of this
match,
Roadkill accidentally splashed Ref Jim Molineaux in the corner. Roadkill then hit a TKO on Monsta Mack, but Ref Jim was
knocked out and couldn't make the count. As Roadkill tended to the ref, Monsta Mack grabbed a chain, and clocked Roadkill
over
the head with it. After hitting him with the chain, Ref Molineaux conviently woke up, and was able to slap the mat three times, as
Monsta Mack picked up the pin.
This was an ok big man match, but it was paint by the numbers once the ref was knocked out.
"Hotstuff" Matt Striker d. Ruckus
Strike was impersonating Superfly Jimmy Snuka in this match. This was the beginning of Striker really getting into the
impersonating gimmick. If Striker was to impersonate Snuka now, I think he'd be wearing cheetah tights. Striker also
mimmicked Rick Rude and Repoman early in this match. Yes, he even had the Lone Ranger style of a black mask on as well,
when mimmicking Repoman. Ruckus
wasn't playing games though with Striker, as he hit a wide array of moves, such as a reverse
somersault legdrop from the top rope. Striker eventually won the match with a uperfly Splash from the top rope, in less
than 6 minutes. Very suprising finish.
I thought this match could've went much longer and been alot better. With Striker doing this gimmick, I don't think Ruckus
was a good choice for an opponent. If Striker wrestled like how he wrestled for World 1, this match would've been alot
better. With that said, it was ok match, but for what 3PW is doing with Striker, another opponent would've been a better
idea.
Commissioner Segment- We had this long promo with Tod Gordon, Bob Artese and Joey Matthews all arguing about who is going
to be the new commissioner of 3PW. Jack Victory then came out, and said he was the bodyguard for the new Commissioner. Jack
then introduced the crowd to Raven. This was Ravens return to the ECW arena, and he got a huge welcome back chant. Raven
then cuts a promo telling everyone that Justin Credible has been stripped of the 3PW Heavyweight Championship. Raven then
hypes up Sabu/Sandman and himself, as the triple threat main event TLC Heavyweight title match, for later on tonight. Raven
then talks to Joey Matthews, and lets Joey know that he doesn't like him. Raven then introduces Joey to his opponent,
the returning Low Ki.
This was an ok promo, but who named Raven the commissioner? Jack Victory as Raven's right hand man was smart booking.
Low Ki d. Joey Matthews
This match was very good and started off with some solid mat wrestling. Both guys got locked up in an intense collar and
elbow tie up, which took both men through the ropes and to the floor. This match also featured both men trading off
various submissions. The crowd turned on this match, as they started chanting "Boring". If the match happened in ROH, the
fans would be clapping like Maslow's dogs. The crowd did get eventually get lively during a rough and vicious chopfest between both
wrestlers. Low Ki also hit some violent kicks on Joey Matthews. Looking at these kicks, you would think that Low
Ki would be able to kick
down a door. Towards the end of this match, Low Ki put Joey in a Ki Klutch. Joey then eye raked the referee, and the
ref turned
around to fix his eyes. Joey then tapped out, but without the ref there, Low Ki let go to complain about missing
the tapout. Joey then went for some
cheap pinfalls, but Ki wouldn't stay down. Eventually, 21 minutes after the first bell rang, Low Ki put Joey in another Ki
Klutch, for the submission victory.
Excellent match here. For alot Low Ki haters who say Low Ki is all about kicks, Low Ki wrestled a very good match here. Joey
also looked well here too, as this wound up being the beginning of a slow push to the top for Joey. Great effort from both
wrestlers.
The Blue Meanie d. Rob Eckos w/Matt Striker
This was match was strictly comedy as Striker tried to help his friend throughout the match. A funny spot in this match saw
Striker pull out two black hoods. He put one on, and made Eckos put the other on. A minute after that, Meanie bumped Eckos
down in the ring, but before he could get the pin, Striker rolled Eckos out, and wearing the black hood, rolled into the ring
ala every tag team that looks like each other in wrestling. The crowd popped for this, as Ref Jim Molineaux just laughed.
Admist all the comedy, Eckos neckbreakered Meanie down, and got a two. The finish of this match saw Blue Meanie hit a powerslam
followed up by a DDT, for the clean 1-2-3.
This was a funny match, that felt like a WWE B-Show TV match.
POSTMATCH: Eckos/Striker hit a Hart Attack on Meanie. Commissioner Raven and Jack Victory come out to the ring. They kick
Striker/Eckos out of the ring, and let them know that Superfly Striker would be wrestling the real Superfly, Jimmy Snuka,
at the next show. You can find Striker vs Snuka on another 3PW DVD, called "United We Stand, Divided We Brawl".
Sugar Shack Promo- Tod Gordon came to the ring with Jasmin St. Claire. Jasmin tells Tod she has a present for Tod, since Tod
bought her a new car, some jewelry and of course, new tits. Jasmin brings out Talia. Jasmin lets Tod know that Jasmin has
bought Talia to be Tod's sex slave. Tod checks out his new property and makes her bend over for him so he can check out
her ass. The camera does a good job of getting a closeup on Talia's asscheeks, for all you perverts out there. After playing
around with Talia, Tod Gordon brings out "The Pitbull" Gary Wolfe with some blond chick called Vixxxen. Vixxxen is new to
the wrestling business, and doesn't know what a hard cam is, as we look at her back for the whole promo. Gary screams during
most of this promo, and proclaims his dominance in 3PW. He also lets the fans know that he's not pleased with them. This leads
to our next match.
As far as this promo, I thought it was quick and to the point, even though the crowd was dead during it. Whoever did Talia's
make up was perfect, as Talia really did look like a dejected slave. You can tell that the way the women are booked in 3PW,
is very similiar to the way the women were booked in ECW, and it's obvious to understand why, since Tod Gordon booked
both promotions.
Damian Adams d. "Pitbull" Gary Wolfe w/Vixxxen
Most of this match saw Gary Wolfe on the offensive after receiving some help from Vixxxen. Gary pummeled Damian, which led
to Damian having his head busted open. Gary beat up the bloody Damian for 299 seconds out of the
300 seconds of this match. After toying for him,
Gary went for a cocky cover. Damian, half awake, rolled Gary over in a crucifix position, and snuck out a quick 1-2-3.
This was just a squash that didn't do anything for Damian. It came off as Gary Wolfe squashing a NJ guy.
POSTMATCH: Gary Wolfe snaps. He chokes Damian Adams out with a chain, beats him up a little,
making Damian look like complete jobber in the process.
This match eventually led to a feud between these two, but I think it would've been nice to see Damian get off at least
some offense in this match.
Xavier d. Homicide
This match started out with some quick wrestling, and went to the outside fast, as Xavier plancha'ed Homicide a minute into
this match. After fighting on the outside, both guys exchanged some rough chops and slaps, as these guys really took it
to each other in this match. Homicide really laid in some vicious kicks in this match. Homicide hit one of his best tope
con hilo's in this match, as he literally owned Xavier with it. Xavier came back later in this match with a big time single
arm DDT. Xavier continued on Homicide's left arm as he twisted it and bended it in every way, in an attempt to get Homicide
to tap out. In a cool spot in this match, Homicide went for the copkilla, but Xavier used his dangling legs and kicked Homicide
in the head. Xavier then hit a reverse unprettier, to get out of the hold for 2. After about 15 minutes or so, Homicide
went to finish Xavier off with a huge ass lariat, but Xavier ducked it, rolled Homicide up, and grabbed a fistful of tights
for the underhanded 1-2-3.
This was another solid match on this DVD. Both guys looked very good here, and I think they could've gone for another 30
minutes. The crowd was into this match alot.
3PW Heavyweight Title Triple Threat TLC Match
Raven w/Jack Victory d.
The Sandman and Sabu w/Tod Gordon and Jasmin St. Claire to win the vacated 3PW World Heavyweight Title
PREMATCH: Sandman was sporting a Raven shirt, which was odd, since Raven gave Sandman 10 seconds to get into the ring, and wouldn't let
Sandman have his huge entrance. Raven also banned Singabpore Canes from being used in this match. Raven also enforces a
NO SMOKING policy, and tells Sandman to put out his cigarette. Raven DDTed Jasmin St. Claire out of the blue, which then led
to Raven giving mouth-to-mouth in an effort to revive her. Sabu and Sandman then all took turns trying to wake the shaken
up Jasmin St. Claire. This then concluded this bizarre little segment.
This match was pretty much what you would expect from these three. Sabu hit his trademarked Air Sabu in this match. There was
alot of weaponry in this match, as all three men beat the crap out of each other with chairs in this match. Sabu also pulled
out the tables, as he put Raven and Sandman through tables in this match. The later stages of this match saw all three men
throw chairs and ladders at each other. It was very violent. Sabu even suplexed Sandman on ladder, crushing the ladder in
half. Towards the end of this match, Raven hit two evenflow DDT's on both men. Both wrestlers took the move very slow,
it looked weird. The finish of this match saw Sabu hit an Arabian facebuster on Sandman through a table. Jack Victory
then pulled Sandman out of the ring, as Raven pinned the fallen Sandman.
This was a sad match to watch, as everyone but Raven, to quote Scott Weiland, looked liked "half the man they used to be."
I'd rather pop in an old ECW DVD than have my memories of these guys watered down with matches like these. Don't get me
wrong, the crowd was into the match and it was a solid main event level match, but it's nowhere as good as it would've been
if it happened in ECW, when all the guys were younger and hungrier and had something more than a paycheck to fight for.
POSTMATCH: Raven cut a promo challenging Sandman next month. Raven went to beat up Sandman, but Sandman dove and put Raven
through a table with what looked like an ass bomb.
BONUS DVD ONLY Match
Joey Matthews/Christian York d. Danny Doring/Roadkill
This match started off very slow with alot of ga-ga, which incited a huge crowd response. This match eventually picked up
with some double team moves from both sides. Doring took a beating during the middle of this match, as York and Matthews
wasted no time capitalizing on their double teaming advantage. Eventually, after some help from Finnegan, Doring hit the
Bareback on Joey Matthews. Roadkill was then tagged in, as Roadkill was a house of fire after getting the hot tag. The finish of this match saw
Roadkill/Doring hit the Hart Attack on Christian York, while the ref was out. As Roadkill went to the top rope to hit
the Panty Drop, Joey Matthews pushed Roadkill off of the top rope, and sent Roadkill flying through a table. York then hit
a reverse DDT on a chair on Doring, picking up the 1-2-3.
It started off slow, but it picked up and this match turned out very nice. The match told a pretty good story, and the
Matthews/York team was on with all their stuff. It's sad to see that York is no longer in the wrestling business.
Final McWord
This DVD has alot of good stuff on it, such as Homicide/Xavier, Low Ki/Joey Matthews, The Main Event, and a close up of
Talia's asscheeks. The rest of the stuff on this DVD was pretty decent, but didn't compare to the stuff I listed above.
This DVD was accurately titled, as Raven was all over the show, from cutting several promos, to becoming a commissioner, to
winning the main event and becoming the 3PW Heavyweight Champion. If you're a Raven fan, I'd waste no time in picking this
up, as Raven put on a hell of a performance here. 3PW really got their money's worth with Raven on this show.
Aside from everything else mentioned, Striker will have you laughing on this DVD. With all the problems 3PW is having right
now, here is an idea to generate money- "The Best of Matt Striker in 3PW". It would probably be the highest selling 3PW DVD
among wrestling fans, as Striker has been golden in 3PW. From being Ric Flair, to his stuff here, Striker is always on. I
have never seen Striker have an off night in 3PW, and I know I'm not the only fan who enjoys his antics. While Striker is
capable of being a serious technical wrestler, it's good to see Striker do something different, and do it so well in 3PW.
I'm sure the mention of a "Best of Striker in 3PW" in this report will wind up leading to a compilation being made by
a fan or maybe even SMW.
The announcers on this DVD are very generic and come off as very promotional. Gerry Strauss plugged Smart Mark Video more
on this DVD than the DOI plugs RF Video press releases! While Strauss and Winner may be nice guys, they are nowhere near
the level of Mark Clemson/Da Bald Guy. Hell, with Monsta Mack on the roster, I'd let Mack be the third man in the booth to
liven things up, as Mack showed he can do a good job announcing on the JAPW DVD/Tape releases. Shit, I'd even pair
Mack/Jasmin St. Claire up, as at least that would be more interesting, and you know both would be saying some funny stuff.
It would also be original.
The production of this DVD, as usual, was downright amazing. 3PW does an excellent job with their DVDs. I believe they use
Smart Mark Video's tape/cameras for their DVD. The way 3PW turns that footage into this DVD is incredible. This DVD is
as professional as you get.
Overall
Another solid effort by 3PW. There is enough good stuff on here to warrant a purchase. This is some-what a good DVD to check
out if you're unfamiliar with the product. The reason I say only some-what is because there is alot of focus on Raven, but
that's only because of the angle 3PW was running/creating that night. 3PW has something for everyone, from good wrestling
to women to ECW type matches to solid indy guy matches, so if you're looking for the complete package, this DVD is a good
choice. I highly recommend it for all 3PW fans, while saying to other people unfamiliar with 3PW that you're better off
getting another one of their DVD's to get a true feeling of what 3PW is like. For me, I enjoyed this DVD alot, and not
too many companies put on such a diverse product, with a kickass production on their DVDs like 3PW does. Also if you're a fan
of Raven, this is the show for you.
You can get this DVD from numerous sources. It's available at all Suncoasts and Sam Goody's across America. You can also
find it online (where it's cheaper) from either High Spots or
Amazon.com or at RF Video . The DVD is also sold at 3PW Live Events, whenever the next
show may be.
