The McRoss Report Returns After A 5 Month Abscence
One of the DOI's most popular columns from way back when, The McRoss Report, is back for its 33rd edition. I haven't written
one of these since my last McRoss Report sabbatical, which was nearly 5 months ago, so if you never read one of these before,
here's a link to the McRoss Report archive section: McRoss Report
Archives
As you can tell, the name of this column is a bite/tribute to a one Mr. Jim Ross, and are just my random thoughts on a bunch
of things. I guess this is kind of like my "Blog" here on the DOI. Since I don't do MySpace (which for reasons I've explained
in previous columns) what better way to put out my random thoughts on the wrestling world than putting all this crap in one
nice little McRoss Report!
So sit back, get a beer, or if you gotta take a dump, print this out and read it there. I should give you a good 15 minutes
of pushing and groaning with this thing.
And of course, Greetings From The Man Underneath The 5 Gallon Heineken Bottle.
I wonder if anyone realizes that I used the same introduction 2 columns in a row! Praise Allah for the copy & paste keys.
I do have to say, these columns are usually the most fun to write, as there is no real structure or flow to them. Since I
last left, I actually had people ask me when I'm going to do another one which is pretty cool. People demand the dirt!
Sabboth The Stiffer
I guess to begin I should address the Jac Sabboth/DOI situation. If you've been keeping tabs on the DOI, you know that Jac
Sabboth was the owner, on paper, of the DOI from December 2006-July 2007. We've posted statements since he's left, and here
is the recent information, since I'm getting a tons of requests from people wanting to know more:
- Jac said he was going to California to run a Ralph Italian Ices chain. Since he said that, he's been in the Wrestling
Universe store, which still remains open, even if it's not really making money right now. Jac is working there all by himself
and no longer has any employees, due to the money not being there. I do know that Jac literally cleans up at Christmas time,
but for the 11 other months, business is a crap shoot. I don't believe he's ever going to move to California or even go
there, because I know he doesn't want to uproot his daughter and because his life is in NY. The California line to me is just
a way for him to get away from bills/debt and the business.
- I don't hate Jac, and am still friends with him. He was over his head, and this is just another thing to add to infamous
"Sabboth The Stiffer" list. Jac dreams big, but doesn't necessarily go full force with his projects. I do think if Jac tried
to build a bit he could've really made an impact. Instead, the load was blown too fast, and he would compete for the sake of
competing and not necessarily have making money as his number one goal. In the end, despite Jac leaving, he did make the DOI
stronger with funding several of our shoot interviews & the WSU promotion. In other words, the DOI is more profitable than it
ever was 8 months ago. We're not making millions here, but we've built up a loyal fanbase through our DVD sales. Jac did fuck
over some customers, but as of today, I've rectified everyone's orders. If there are any DOIVideo.com customers who were
screwed by Sabboth, just contact me and I will take care of the issue, but I do believe everyone has been taken care of.
- Jac did do everything he could to repay what he owed myself and Johnny 5 (who was also on the DOI payroll.) Sure items
aren't the same thing as cash, but he did try to do the right thing.
- Jac did give everything WSU related to me. As stated earlier, I'm going to keep the WSU girl shows going for now. We are
going to be running another show on 9/22 (more info coming on that). The only reason I'm able to afford the shows are through
the DVD sales. The fan support for WSU has been amazing. I've never wanted to be a promoter as it is an endless and thankless
job, and I don't even consider myself one. I am organizing these shows for the the wrestlers and for the fans. All money put
into the promotion through DVD sales goes right back into the promotion for the next event. Pretty much, as long as everyone
keeps supporting the promotion, it will be kept alive. Jac has given me all the WSU DVD rights, belts, etc, and I do thank
him for that and trying to make things right.
- How many people did Jac truly stiff is an answer I can't give, as I don't have an exact number. I can confirm the rumors of
bounced checks to the DPCC, Bon Jovi and others. I do know he also shorted Frank Goodman out of money, and several wrestlers
and other wrestling organizations. Again, Jac was trying to jump to step 10 right away instead of going one step at a time.
That's why he made up this California story, because he just doesn't have the money to do anything right now.
- I do think Jac will return in 8-9 months. I will be running a pool on the DOI shortly. We will also have a seperate pool in
regards to what he calls the promotion. A popular name being floated around is Ultimate Impact Wrestling Superstars Universe
of Balian.
- I want to personally thank Jac for giving us Rocksha vs Niggataker. Whether you remember Sabboth as the Stiffer, the guy
who rolls around in his store with Danny Demanto while sporting a raging hard on, for ICW, UCW, WSU or whatever, please
remember that Jac was the man to give us Rocksha/Niggataker, and if that doesn't get him into the WWE Hall of Fame, I don't
know what will.
- As far as Bash Sabboth week on the Masked Maniac hotline/radio show, I do find it entertaining, as it is over the top. I
could see why Jac would be upset. And for the record, several people have confirmed the story of someone throwing a pigeon in
Jac's face, although Jac says it never ever happened. I can't see something like that happening, but it seems alot of people
have confirmed it. In regards to people throwing a bottle of urine in Jac's face, if you're going to do something like that,
you should put it on YouTube to confirm that it happened.....
And there's my segueway, as we hit our next subject...
You Tube
It is amazing how fast YouTube has taken off. I still can't believe this site is in business. I don't even know how they are
in business when you think about it. How can they afford to host all that bandwidth to run videos? How are all these TV
shows, movies, wrestling organizations, musical groups, record labels, etc allowing their content to be aired for free? Right
now I'm watching a Type-O-Negative concert that I would've probably got on DVD, if it wasn't for YouTube. We are definitely
living in the information age, and it's good to see so many wrestling groups take advantage of that.
The TNA-YouTube story I found hilarious. Here you have the second biggest wrestling group in America getting their YouTube
account canned due to politics with their parent company. With all the money TNA is hemmorraging, are you telling me they
can't afford to host videos on their server? It's little stories like this that makes TNA look so fucking bootleg. You'd
never hear about the WWE in a story like this. TNA is not even mentioned at all by Congress or in the national media with
all this Benoit stuff because they are so under the radar and like Kurt Angle said on a recent Impact, "without Kurt Angle,
it's an indy show drawing 30 people." Gotta love the champ putting over his own company.
But back to YouTube, it means that there is no such thing as privacy for celebrities. With cell phone cameras, button
cameras, asshole cameras and whatever else, if someone fucks up, it's on YouTube. If Sheik wants to slap Simms senseless for
the world to see, it's up there. If Beyonce falls down at a concert it's up there. If Britney does something stupid it's up
there. A-Rod can't even get a load off at the strip club without cell phone cameras going off left and right. No one's
personal lives are personal anymore, especially for celebrities.
It is positive to see alot of wrestling groups use YouTube to promote their products. FOr bookers & promoters, it's a way to
scout talent without having to shuffle through tons of DVDs. There's a story that's out there that when WSX booked Human
Tornado for their shows, they told him "Just do what you do on YouTube." That's how big it's getting. Alot of indy wrestlers
should take advantage of YouTube by putting up their matches and highlight clips. It will go along way and generate you money
in the long haul. Everyone is living in the internet age, and you should take advantage of it while you can. It's not like
the Funks & Briscoes were able to do this.
MySpace & Protecting The Business
I should preface this section as saying an internet writer is the last person to be talking about protecting the business,
but hear this out anyway and take it for what it is. If wrestlers today can play hotline hosts and reporters, sit all day on
MySpace, then surely people with the internet can comment on wrestling.
As posted in one of my columns along time ago, I'm not a fan of the MySpace stuff. I think it kills any credibility for
wrestling. Not everyone knows wrestling is predetermined and the wrestlers are employees. If you are reading this, you
obviously know what wrestling is all about, but there are so many people who don't. Look at the Vince/limo bullshit. When
Vince's limo went up in smokes, the FBI, govt. officials, police and whoever else was all called by concerned fans. There are
still people who believe. Instead of trying to let them in on it all, it should be protected better. Of course the business
is exposed, but it can be tighter.
Here's a question for everyone, and I'd love to hear the answers from anyone reading this, and here it goes: How old were you
when you found out wrestling wasn't real? What match exposed the business to you?
I can remember exactly when I found out wrestling was predetermined. I was 8 years old. The show was Survivor Series 1990 (A
PPV that still holds up today). I should also mention at this time, my cousin, who was 5 years older than me, was a huge
wrestling fan, particularly of the AWA. He was watching the show with me, but never spoiled that wrestling wasn't what I
perceived it to be.
The match, ironically, was the first WWF match for the Undertaker. The match was one of the classic 4 vs 4 elimination
matches. The participants were: The Dream Team (Dusty Rhodes, Koko B. Ware, and Hart Foundation) vs. Million Dollar Team
(Ted DiBiase, The Undertaker, Rhythum & Blues AKA Greg Valentine & Honky Tonk Man). The Million Dollar Man was the wrestler
I caught "working". There was a part in the match where Bret Hart & Dibiase go to the floor. Hart throws Dibiase into the
"STEEL" steps. Dibiase flat out just slapped his hands on the steps and did a weak head nod motion. He then sold the head
like he got shot, although it was obvious his hands hit. Since I was too young to watch the PPV at night live, I was watching
it on tape, as my cousin taped it for me. I rewound the tape. In slo-mo, it was obvious that Dibiase was never hurt, nor was
his head anywhere close to the steps. That match got me to analyzing the matches more in-depth, and SHOCK, seeing the
wrestlers talk to each other other.
Sadly, my cousin would confirm to me my suspicions. However, it wouldn't turn me off. I'd go through the phase that "well
some if is fake, some of it is real". However, as you get older and wiser, you take it for what it is. Everyone reading this
knows what wrestling is, but I think you get more of an appreciation for it when you know what the guys are doing. These guys
fake fight really well. On the indy level especially, some of what you see is actually real. Sure precautionary measures are
taken, but if you get hit with a chair, it does sting. You can't "fake" getting put through objects on fire. You can't stunt
20-30 foot drops, unless you're TNA and you expose what the wrestlers are going through. Matches, again on the indy level,
can be "stiff" to show and exhibit realism. Exhibit A: The Necro Butcher.
I do think the business can be reversed a bit, if the right people were in charge. It does need to start at the top though.
It is hard for the indy guy to protect the business with the silliness in the WWE and with Vince flat out saying "I'm in the
sports entertainment business, not the rasslin' business." Newsflash: NBA, NFL, MLB and that other thing, I think it's called
NHL, are all sports entertainment businesses as well. If people aren't going to those games/events, watching them on TV and
buying team merchandise, than those organizations would cease to exist, kind of like the XFL. However, you don't have David
Stern, Roger Goodell, or Bud Selig answer in press conferences when pushed on a hard question, "Well I'm in the sports
entertainment business." Little things like this will make wrestling always look goofy. And trust me, with the tumultuous
month pro sports just went through, all three of those commissioners would've looked to have a free pass with that line.
Like YouTube, MySpace is a good way for an indy wrestler to get their name out. My MySpace opinions have lightened up a bit.
I'm all for wrestlers having official pages, as it promotes the business and fan support. I'm all for promotions having
pages. MySpace is a promotional tool and if you're a wrestling promoter it doesn't make sense not to have one. It's free
advertising. For the cheap and broke indy guy, you can use MySpace as an official webpage and not have to pay a dime in
hosting fees. What I am against is seeing guys, who are supposed to hate each other, commenting on each other pages like a
bunch of junior high school girls. Even having guys you're feuding with in your "top friends" makes wrestling look fake in my
eyes. I think all wrestler pages should try to protect the business and try to promote the business. If I'm a fan, I'm more
inclined to get more interested & spend money if I see guys hyping up their matches, rather than saying "fun match last
friday, cant wait to work wit u again 143 xoxox" on their pages. I also think Danny Demanto should delete his myspace page as
it is just odd and eerie for a 24 year old grown man to have a page that resembles a teenager ready to hit the mall.
I was also forwarded a story that was reported on other sites about Homicide being fined for sticking up for Konnan on his
MySpace. With MySpace, the wrestlers are more accessible than ever before, and I'm sure he was hounded with questions about
it. MySpace fucked him, just like how it's fucked over other wrestlers. He was damned if he didn't, damned if he does. If he
doesn't respond, fans think he might be blowing them off. If he does, TNA fines him for commenting publicly about company
issues. I don't know if the story is true or not, but if it is, I think it's pathetic that TNA has time to fine people about
MySpace when they can't even keep a YouTube account! And this is the same TNA that was using "MySpace" videos to promote
their product. If TNA put 1/1000th of the energy they put into the internet into booking a quality wrestling show, maybe TNA
would break the 1.3 rating barrier and wouldn't be called an indy show by their champion on TV. Then again, this is the same
company that brought out three ex-WWF tag team champions, and spent 10 minutes promoting the WWF and making TNA look like a
paycheck.
Pro Wrestling Syndicate & Spencer Jawitz
A group we didn't mention much on the DOI in the past, is Pro Wrestling Syndicate. They've had one show already. It was
rumored that the show would never happen due to the huge budget, but they came through and had a solid debut. PWS is now
returning on September 7th, in Garfield, NJ.
Before going into the meat of this section, here's a McRoss Report Exclusive, which will be on the DOI site tomorrow:
7
"PWS has announced that in addition to the 8 scheduled matches for their Blitzkrieg event on September 7 in Garfield, NJ
... the WSU women's title will be defended at the event between Alicia and Talia Madison... in addition PWS has announced
that Sabu, Crowbar, and "The Genius" Lanny Poffo will be taking part in an autograph signing starting at 7pm. Tickets for the
event are currently on sale and autograph tickets will go on sale on Monday at www.prowrestlingsyndicate.com "
This deal will be beneficially for us at WSU and for PWS. For WSU, it allows our championship to gain more prestige and
visibility. For PWS, they get a womans match on their show, with two of the top talents in the northeast. We'll have more on
this tomorrow.
Back to Syndicate, as reported earlier this week on DOI, one of the partners was tossed out of the company for basically
acting like a stereotypical jew .... I mean an Eric Simms. That partner was Spencer Jawitz. I talked to
the partners in PWS & to some of the wrestlers and it seemed that Spencer shorted guys on money, never sent checks out and
would go to I-Hop to steal tips from poor waiters & waitresses who are just trying to eke out a living. This is also the same
Spencer who was infatuated & literally obsessed with Foxxy Dreams & Damian Dragon, as he would ask myself and several other
people in wrestling and around wrestling all about their marriage and their personal lives. He said he was their friend, but
the stuff he'd say about them was appalling and somewhat stalkerish. Basically, like most people in wrestling, Spencer was a
strange guy. Then again, it seems that wrestling attracts all the weirdos and/or addicts anyway, where you're at the point
where nothing phases you anyway.
Before continuing this story, here's a video of Spencer, playing promoter for some failed promotion he was running at the
time:
Oh yea, I should note that Spencer demanded to do this promo, because he is and I quote, "a professional actor." This is also
the same Spencer who claimed to bring Kenny Dykstra in the business, which is a lie and pathetic. I mean, out of all the
names you could lie about, Kenny Dykstra? Then again, I guess picking a smaller level name makes it somewhat more believable.
Anyway the video:
My personal experiences with Spencer are experiences I'm not too fond of. Everyone knows I'm a huge fan of alcohol and the
different styles it comes in. Like wrestling protocol (shaking hands, etc), there is alcohol protocol. The people who know
me know I'm very generous when it comes to drinking, because usually I'm drinking way before you were, so you get free with
your cash. It's that next morning when you open your wallet and you're like "fuck bro", that you realize how much you spent.
Anyway, I was at some indy show, I think an NWS show, and Spencer shows up. Being the kind alcoholic I am, I bought Spencer a
beer. They were only a $1 each, as it was in an Elks Lodge or VFW anyway, so money wasn't an issue. I was already half in
the bag anyway, and a single isn't going to make or break me. I guess five singles make or break Spencer, according to the
PWS staff, as that is what Spencer stole off an I-Hop table. Anyway, I bought the next two rounds, and then got two free
rounds for myself from the bartender. When I was done with those, I only had a 20 left. I tested Spencer and dropped a hint
that I didn't want to break a 20 for the next round. Spencer said yea I hear you. For the next round, Spencer got himself
only a water, and I had to break my 20. It is proper bar room etiquette to return a favor. I usually don't care about stuff
like this, but since I heard from the PWS staff how Spencer was with money, this story is just another example of cheap fuck
syndrome. I hope the Iron Sheik humbles him one day.
My other experience with Spencer was recapped on the DOI. To make a long story short, Tim Arson was back in town from Puerto
Rico and asked if I could help him out with any upcoming shows, since he hadn't been around in a while. Knowing that Tim is a
good wrestler, has the Zombie name value and an asset to any locker room, I checked to see what I could do. I got him on the
Pro Wrestling Hybrid show. Later that week, Spencer had a titty attack, saying that Arson couldn't work for PWH because he
had the exclusive on Tim Arson. Indy guys having exclusives. So pretty much, Spencer fucked poor Keith Zimmer, who was just
trying to run a show and put money into the wrestlers pockets. SPencer cost Arson a payday, although Arson was paid nicely
when he did wrestle for PWS, as the Zombie. The whole thing rubbed me the wrong way, because the only way people on the
indies get to the next level is with exposure and by keeping active. Pretty much, SPencer handcuffed Arson from making money
and wrestling in front of different people. There's more details to this story, but it's so long-winded and not necessary to
rehash.
Syndicate officials reached out to the DOI to tell us that Spencer was no longer with the company, which is great news for
PWS. Spencer did hurt their credibility, which was a reason alot of people didn't think their first show was going to come
off anyway. The guy who is in charge now, Eric Tapout, lives in the promoting business, doing music shows when he's not doing
wrestling. I still don't see how Syndicate can be making money on their shows, but they are putting on great matches for the
fans, which fans should take advantage of. I don't know their long term plans, but the 9/7 show to me looks stacked. With
JAPW the next day, only 20 minutes away, fans are gonna have a great weekend, and I'm happy to promote both companies on the
DOI. Both companies are fan oriented and with Spencer out, ran by legit people who aren't going to fuck you over. I hope
people come out to both events.
As far as what Spencer does from here, who knows? I'm sure that as long as he has his Foxxy Foxxy DOI Shoot Interview (NOW
AVAILABLE IN THE DOIVIDEO.COM STORE, BUY TODAY!) he will be able to live his life in glee.
For more PWS information check out www.prowrestlingsyndicate.com
The Iron Sheik
The Iron Sheik has become a popular guy in the last few months. I've written about him before in past DOI columns, so
quickly, I'll rehash what I said in the past.
I think Sheik is one of the smartest guys today. There are people who know him as the drunken Arab, and not as perhaps, the
best heel who stayed heel his entire career, in pro wrestling history. Seriously, who was a heel their whole career and was
bigger or better than the Iron Sheik? Like the Sheik says, he is the real.
Sheik has reinvented himself. There are more people today who know the Sheik as the crazy man. Sheik is getting tons of
bookings now because of his public rants. Who would've thought that out of all the wrestlers in the world, The Iron Sheik
would've got the most notoriety and fame? The Sheik really has made a name for himself off of YouTube. Sheik is now on the
Howard Stern show because of his YouTube & shoot rants. If there was anyone who belonged in the Wack Pack it is him.
On a side note, free ads on the DOI to any promotion that books The Iron Sheik vs Beetlejuice w/Gary The Retard as special
ref.
I recently got to live a life long dream and that is drink with the Iron Sheik. I do have to thank Mr. Eric Simms of
ESSPromotions.com for the opportunity. Like I said in previous columns, how Simms puts up with the Sheik is unknown. The
money must be real good, because babysitting the Sheik is not a job that workers off the boat would even take.
Talking with the Sheik, he is smarter than he lets on. While I don't want to say he's "Working" everyone, he definitely knows
what he's doing. He is entertaining. Like anything else, The Sheik is addicting. When you hear the Sheik rant, you forget all
your troubles and worries, and you are flat out entertained. The Sheik is a funny guy, but not a fool. He's making more money
now, since his WWF heyday. He's one of the most sought out legends, and is getting more fame now. Arguably, more fans today
know the Sheik for his rants than of his wrestling career. Either way, it is bringing in money, and the Sheik deserves it.
Let's not forget that The Sheik had major blows in his life. His wife of over 20 years stole his money and left him broke.
His daughter was murdered in cold blood. The guy deserves a break, and if those life incidents happened to you, who knows
where your head would be at? The Sheik deep down is a good guy, and I'm glad to see him making money. Now only if he realized
how much Eric Simms was making...
ROH & The Project 161 Thing
I can't believe people actually asked me about this. I don't really watch much ROH anymore because most of the top talent is
in TNA or the WWE now. ROH is using guys they never would've used 1-3 years ago. Remember how Hero, despite being begged for
by fans, was never brought in? Now that ROH is desperate a bit for talent, they will now use the guys the fans want, rather
the guys that Gabe wants. Trust me, a year ago, ROH would never be using Chikara guys.
As far as the 161 thing, I think it's brilliant. Gabe never sells for anything on message boards, as he just deletes stuff he
doesn't approve for. By even commenting about it on his message board, you know it's an angle. Trust me, Gabe wouldn't let
pictures of he and his wife float around the internet, (like they are in this 161 angle) and I'm saying this first hand,
because a few years ago, people posted a bunch of pictures from Gabe's wedding and another picture of his wife hugging Rob
Feinstein. Gabe frantically begged me in a demanding tone to take them down off the DOI Message Board, which I did, as I do
believe that innocent people, like Gabe's wife, do not belong to be talked about. And for the record, the picture with the
hug, definitely was platonic and not anything else.
Anyway, back to the 161, it's a great angle. It has everyone talking. ROH is a real wrestling company and not some rinky-dink
indy fed. ROH has its highs and lows. In my opinion, ROH is in a bit of a low, due to alot of their talent being gobbled up.
ROH has done wonders for many wrestlers, and soon will do the same thing with these next crop of guys. With the exception of
American Dragon, there is no Homicide, Samoa Joe or CM Punk anymore, but with time, I do see guys like Chris Hero, Delirious
& hopefully Eddie Kingston filling those roles.
When you're in a low as a booker, you can do two things to get fans talking. You could do a tournament or you can do a who-
dun-it-angle. You don't even need to do these things when you're in a low, but these are two ideas that can help you out when
you need to get a buzz. ROH is the king of the unnecessary tournaments, as is evidenced by recent shows. ROH just did another
tournament which will be forgotten about soon, if it hasn't been forgotten about already. So what did ROH cook up, a who-dun
-it angle.
This 161 thing can be big. In my opinion, I don't even think ROH knows where they are going with it. That's the best part
about these types of angles. You can just run them, and later down the line think of the pay off. To me, I think it would be
a great way to introduce Kingston into the company. I think Kingston is the last indy guy left, who really fits the ROH mold,
to not have a regular roster spot there. This guy can fill the void that Punk left with his promos and style. What a better
way to introduce a new guy to the roster? I really don't know where ROH is going with this, nor do I think ROH even 100%
knows, but I tip my hat and give them kudos because they have everyone talking, and that's what it's all about.
Philly Warz
Speaking of Eddie Kingston, I can't believe that PWU isn't doing more with him. To compare, it's like Bret Hart going to WCW,
where WCW kind of just dropped the ball with him. Instead of doing main events and being tossed right into the mix, Kingston
is in these odd triple threat matches without reason. PWU seriously got the biggest defect in this whole CZW/PWU beef, and
they didn't do anything with it. I know if CZW could get one of PWU's top guys, he'd be pushed hard. If you're going to pay a
guy to be on your show, you figure you'd want to do the most with him, and not keep him in the mid-card.
Going back to the PWU/CZW thing, is there really anything left for PWU to do? They pretty much have won this thing. Despite
if tickets are free, $5, $500, people are coming to watch them. People are standing up to watch them, while CZW is having
trouble filling the building. Paid attendance is something people like to talk about, but all that really matters is how many
people were there ,because that tells you how many people wanted to see your show. PWU has really grown from a promotion
doing shows in bars & at warehouses, as the main promotion in Philly right now. However, from rumors I've heard, CZW does
have one ace up their sleeve and I hope to see it happen as it will be good for Philly wrestling, and of course, keep my site
busy. Competition is a good thing, especially for the DOI site, but it is also great for the fans.
