Yo yo ma and welcome to another edition of the infamous McRoss Report. This will most likely be a short one, as I've been swamped with DOI work.
As always, greetings from the man underneath the 5-Gallon Heineken bottle.
I gotta say, I had to laugh for several reasons when I heard the Coach go on WWE.com and blast PWInsider's Dave Scherer. For one, Dave Scherer deserves to be blasted for infecting thousands of computers with viruses and spyware. I think the work on PWInsider is great, despite their bias (But then again what site doesn't have some sort of slant or bias?), but to have someone sit through 58585 pop-up ads and give people viruses just sucks. It's not like PWInsider is giving away top secret information that will seriously affect the United States or anything. They are writing about a worked sport. No site that covers a worked sport needs to giving people spyware or viruses. Going back to the Coach though, he blasted Dave Scherer for several reasons, and to hear them, check out WWE.Com and go to the "Coach-Cast" link. Scherer is a little weasel, so it's funny to see him get blasted, because after all, this is the same guy who tried recording wrestler's conversations in ECW. I remember one UXW show, where I had a tape recorder for an interview I was conducting, and one ex-ECW wrestler asked me if I was going to "Scherer" them.
The main reason I found Coach bashing Scherer humorous, is because it shows where the state of the wrestling business is at today. Most writers who cover the WWE, with Meltzer being the exception, just write whatever they want, and don't have to worry about what the wrestlers or promoters will say to them after they post their columns or reports. For alot of the writers today, there are no consequences for their opinions. They don't have to deal with people whining about what they write, because after all, they are just on the outside looking in.
I believe the WWE just had an indy moment under Coach's watch. Time and time again I have to listen to so many people whine about what I write and about my opinion because my opinion is not the same as some wrestlers in the business. That's what I always thought seperated the WWE from the indies. The WWE's stance usually is to ignore everything on the internet and to move forth, despite what is written by the internet press. The WWE realized one bad review, one comment that they didn't like or whatever, in the end, didn't affect their business. In one swoop, Coach changed that. He acknowledged the internet and fought back. Good for him. It's a stand for the boys. But really, does it make the WWE look good? It makes the WWE bushleague in my eyes, because they are worried about what some guy who gives viruses to peoples computers has to say.
I understand the WWE has been using their site more proactively lately. They are using their site to aggressively push angles. They are using their site to break news stories. They have broken kayfabe on their site. They have acknowledged wrestler contracts, what a booker is, roster cuts, and other type of stories you usually wouldn't see on a company's web site. Maybe Coach bashing Scherer fits into all of this. I don't know. What I do know is that anytime anyone tries to pick a feud with the media, it's the person picking the fight who winds up losing in the end. Just ask Barry Bonds.
So as I heard Coach's comments, I was thinking how this all could've been avoided. What if Coach called Scherer or emailed him, and vented to him privately? Maybe some sort of agreement, even if it was a "agree to disagree" type of thing could've been worked out. Instead, Scherer goes on his site and bashes Coach back. The WWE has gotten a bit indy, no? The WWE showed the same paranoia and disdain that some honorable companies do to this site. The WWE is number one, they shouldn't be acting like a third rate indy promotion. Coach has every right to vent, but it was probably better off to keep his mouth quiet in this case.
It's funny this all happened, because I just got a phone call from one of my wrestler friends in the business who said this is what I go through most of the time. It's amazing how many t-shirt wearing indy wrestlers & how many 20-fans-drawing promoters worry about what I say on the site. If people worried about training or promoting as much as they worried about my opinion on this site, maybe they'd be successful and maybe I would have a different opinion on them.
Ref Hanson said it the best in his DOI Shoot, which is still only available for $11 through PayPal, ORDER TODAY! , "Wrestlers and promoters shouldn't care what internet writers say about them. Any wrestler who worries about what Sean McCaffrey or Mike Johnson has to say is a mark." I've praised Hanson's work on this site, and I've also criticized & critiqued his work on this site. No matter what I wrote, good or bad, Hanson didn't let that affect our friendship outside the business, which is rare to begin with because he's a cock sucking Red Sox fan.
So what am I trying to get at? The people who worry about what is written on the internet shouldn't. Yes, the press is a powerful tool, but hard work will always pay off more than paying off the press or bashing the press. Too many people put too much stock into what is written on the internet. Fucking relax. And if you really have a problem, speak up instead of doing the whole behind-the-back gimmick, because everyone in wrestling are like old washer woman- everyone has gossip.
Just in a related story, I was talking to a prominent wrestling booker/promoter. It's mind-boggling how many wrestlers can't have fun and relax anymore. This promoter, in addition to others, has lost his love for wrestling, because he's getting harrassed by all these dickhead indy wrestlers for work. Yes wrestling is a business, but sometimes people just want to have fun and relax. It's not politics when people are going out to party without you sometimes. Some people in this business just don't want to be bothered by the business all the time.
I'm rambling here, but the people who know what I'm talking about will smile, and the people who are too stupid to understand will say fuck this stupid column. And for the legit fans of the business, you should know that not everyone is an asshole.
Speaking of people who aren't assholes, how about that motherfuckin, head-poundin, brain beatin' son of a bitch, Corporal Robinson? If there is anyone who is really "real" left in the business, it's him. Seriously. I know I wouldn't want to fight an ex-marine who has taken up the hardcore style just because he likes the way his body feels when he's in pain. I hope everyone got a chance to check out his interview that was posted earlier this week, because I thought it was one of the better interviews on the site.
I've been getting alot of emails from fans and wrestlers, asking me about the emergence of all these women tag teams and the possibility of there being a legit womens tag team division in indy wrestling. My response? How about building up a legit singles division somewhere. Would an all womens show work? Possibly if it was promoted right, but it would be a huge risk. The indy mens tag team ranks is just starting to show life, so I don't see the womens tag division getting a huge jump if people are now just starting to get back into indy tag wrestling again. Plus, WXW has done everything besides castrating themselves in the name of womens wrestling, and guess what, it aint really drawing much and isn't too profitable. Sure it sounds chauvenist and pigly for me to say this, but I don't think womens wrestling can draw unless it's all T & A.
In the dropping-the-bomb section of this report, there will be two companies returning to the wrestling game in a few months. PW Elite, promoted by Peter Ferriero, will return on January 28th, in Boonton, NJ. Pete has found a great booker (no not me haha!) and is looking to change things up. If Chris Idol is wearing a belt by the third show, we can call Pete a liar then, but for now, I'm willing to give Pete and his promotion a second, I mean third, umm fourth chance. (Pete previously promoted CWF, IHPW & PW Elite.)
The other company I have to be a little discreet about because not everything is finalized yet. However, people will be "feeling the heat", again.
Oh, and outside of those two companies making their return, their might be a different promotion hitting the scene, if the right people can get the right money to do it. If this promotion gets off the ground, it will be something so new and fresh, that I think it will be successful.
Did you preorder your Carmine Sabia DOI Shoot Interview yet? I'm telling you, you will have tears in your eyes laughing during this.
An update on the DOI Kevin Kelly Shoot: We are going to worry about promoting the Carmine Sabia shoot for now. Expect a major announcement about the Kevin Kelly shoot interview next week.
Jamsin St. Claire has been calling the DOI, and she has alot to get off her chest, literally & figuratively. You can see it and hear it all, very very very soon, as the DOI will be filming a shoot interview with her later this month.
Do indy wrestlers who wear T-Shirts think that the WWE is looking for T-Shirt wearing wrestlers? Only a select few can get away with it. If you aren't talented enough to get by in a T-Shirt, at least try to look like a wrestler. There are less Homicide's & B-Boys than there are your Dirty Dan Petit's of the world.
10/22. JAPW in Atlantic City. Don't miss it.
I gotta say I'm a fan of the new direction that UXW is going in. It's about time the big name indy guys mix it up with the big time ex-WWE/ECW/WCW wrestlers. Both Homicide vs Rhino and Christopher Street Connection vs New Age Outlaws are two great examples of how great UXW can be when everything is clicking.
Eric "Vale Tudo" has done a great job handeling the coverage of UFC on this site.
Retroslam.com has been updated. Retroslam, the mega convention being promoted by Carmine Sabia, takes place on 10/15 in Whippany, NJ. I'm not a big autograph seeker, because my name isn't Billy Firehawk (Drum Shot), but this looks like a good little event if you're into the autograph/picture gimmick.
And while on conventions, it's hilarious that at every convention you got 20 tables selling the same exact merchandise. Right now, the WWE Collector Figures are all the rage. I gotta admit, I'm a mark for those figures as well, but I don't got $15 a pop for them. However, I do got my Ric Flair figure posed on my computer desk. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
World-1 has came up with a great idea, which will most likely be stolen. World-1 is now offering audio updates on their website. It's a very smart move on their part. More indy companies are taking advantage of the internet every day. The ones that do are the most successful. While on World1, check out World1Wrestling.com for information on their 10/7 return to Philadelphia.
Despite me thinking John Curse is shady because he has screwed with others in the past, I gotta say NYWC seems to be rolling along nicely. A UXW vs NYWC feud seemed like a fucking stupid idea up to a year ago. Now, I'm thinking it would draw and be successful. Plus, who wouldn't mind seeing The Masked Maniac stick a hot dog in Greg Stengel's ass? Promotions working together = more money and more excitement for everyone.
Message to Billy Firehawk: Stop updating your blog with negative comments about people in wrestling. Everyone reads it. Plus, why would you get mad about someone reading something you wrote anyway?
Eric Simms vs Psycho Sid is a match I'd pay to see. Look for Simms to talk about Sid and his dealings with Sid, in a future DOI column.
To BigBen213- I make it clear when something is my opinion or not, and it is my opinion that you are a douchebag. For the record, we post all press releases sent to us, and we post Smart Mark Video's press releases whenever we get them.
A Geno Moore Shoot Interview would be excellent for people in the business, because everyone loves Geno's war stories. However, I wonder if fans could appreciate it. Geno Moore is like a proctologist at a party, if you see him, hang around, because you'll hear alot of good shit. No one tells a story like Geno.
I recently got half-way through the Dennis Corralluzo shoot interview that Ricky O is currently bootlegging. (Only fucking with you Ricky.) Anyway, after watching Dennis's shoot, I really wish the DOI was around to cover his actions, because I know I would've had a fun time doing it. For all the shit that has been said about Dennis, at least he understood the business and knew how to make money. Indy promoters making money in this area, seemed to die down when he died, outside of a few select promotions.
Kevin Matthews vs Jake The Snake will headline the 10/15 NWS show. I'm looking forward to watching Kevin eating a DDT. That is, if Jake can beat Kevin. Who knows, maybe Kevin will piss on Damian like it's an SSCW title belt. For more on that show, check out NWSWrestling.com
I caught TNA's IMPACT Spike TV debut. I'm impressed, but the one thing I noticed is that everything moves so fucking fast that alot of the action doesn't register. By the time the match is over, you forget 10 things that you saw in the match. Oh, and if TNA is smart, AJ Styles & Samoa Joe will become bonafide wrestling superstars. Ditto Chris Daniels. I also gotta question Nash vs Jarrett headlining a TNA PPV. No one wants to pay to watch that shit outside of Jarrett's daddy.
ROH had two great shows this past weekend, and here's your DOI slant on it: How the fuck does ROH only draw 1400 people combined for two shows featuring Kenta Kobashi, Jimmy Yang, Low Ki, Homicide, Samoa Joe, etc? ROH drew 1500+ crowds two years ago for Jeff Hardy and Muta. The ROHbots can praise the product all they want, but ROH can be 10 times bigger. If ROH is smart, Gabe is the ex-ROH booker by the end of the year, with Cornette taking control. And that's not a shot at Gabe. Every successful wrestling company rotates bookers in order to stay successful. Every promotion and every territory changes bookers to keep the product fresh and hip. Maybe that's why the crowds aren't what they should be there.
Chris Hyatte is coming to the DOI. It's already starting up a stir all over the internet. If you don't know who he is, be prepared to read something like you've never read before. And to let the cat out of the bag on Hyatte, Hyatte will be recapping TNA Impact (we hope weekly!) and will present his "And Another Thing" column on indy wrestling. Hyatte writing for the DOI is something that helps both parties, and the DOI is looking forward to what Hyatte churns out here. Make sure to read his debut column on October 10th.
That is all.
Later.
