The following was written in the middle of 2004. I mentioned this column recently and several people asked for it to be reposted on the DOI site. Some things have changed, promotions have changed, competition has changed, but one thing has not- the talent and entertainment, that The Christopher Street Connection provide. Enjoy!

McPinions
By: Sean “The MiC” McCaffrey

What up everyone in DOI land and welcome to another thrilling installment of McPinions.

Today I will be writing about a tag team. Before you hit the back button, it is not about the DRS or Solution! The DRS and Solution are great teams and have had many opportunities, as well as titles around their waists. But there is another team who is on their level, and maybe even a little bit above them. I'm talking about my favorite fags on the indy scene today, (not Bravado and Striker), none other than the Christopher Street Connection.

I have never really written a whole column discussing a wrestler or team, but I think after some recent shows and matches, it is warranted. Remember this is only my opinion only. Feel free to discuss the following on the DOI Message Board. Let's roll...

After watching alot of shows in 2004, two things has always rung true when the Christopher Street Connection, Mace Mendoza and Buff-E, get in the ring- their match is usually the most entertaining match on the show. The second thing is despite the loud crowd reaction, the CSC haven't held any tag team gold since the days of the doghouse. While championships may be considered meaningless by others, and considered props, I think that every championship in any promotion brings a sense of respect and honor. By becoming a champion, it shows that a promotion has confidence in a person to represent them. By being a champion, you reflect a promotion. Being a champion is important and shouldn't be taken lightly.

The CSC have been around for a long time. Despite playing homosexuals in the ring for the last few years, the CSC have never gotten old. Gay gimmicks come and go, but the CSC are the exception. They have made it work for some time now, and it looks like they have no sing of stopping. Looking at them individually, Mace Mendoza is a solid technical wrestler who can step in the ring with anyone. Mace Mendoza had a great match against CM Punk on the 12/27 ROH Preshow. Mace can wrestle his ass off. Looking at Buff-E, many might not realize that he's one of the best strong style wrestlers today. He might not have to beat the crap out of someone in every match, but the guy can take punishment as well as deliver it. Together, the CSC are full of hilarity and able to make even the strongest homophobe crack a smile and appreciate their antics. I think Buff-E has Mace beat on the one-liners that he dishes out in the ring, and I think Mace has Buff-E beat on being utterly anti-heterosexual repulsive.

So why am I writing this? I am posing this question for indy promoters and indy fans. How come the CSC haven't seen the respect they deserve? Let's just do a quick run down of where they have been in the last year:

JCW- They made a few sporadic appearances in JCW. They stole one show against the DRS, and another against The Solution. Both matches, despite being totally different, were full of great wrestling and humor. These matches took place during JCW's "dead crowd" period. Even though they took place during this period, they recieved the loudest crowd reactions on the show. Anyone who had to follow these matches was stuck, because there was no way you were going to top a CSC match.

JAPW- CSC have been regulars in JAPW for some time now. They have recently added Devin Sturgis and Jailbait to their entourage. The CSC have challenged for the titles only to go down in defeat. The CSC have had entertaining matches in JAPW for some time now. They have also had great matches as well. For some reason they have stuck around the midcard, and recently had to put over Rush and Roach. While Rush and Roach are up and comers, no way should they beat a team that has the experience of the CSC. Watching the CSC lose that match looked like JAPW just gave up on CSC. If JAPW was the WWE, CSC looked like they'd be on "Too Cool" duty and just be jobbing out to everyone. This isn't to knock JAPW, as I think they are a great promotion and one of the most innovative, but I think they could do more with the CSC and make CSC major players.

USA PRO- CSC have had some decent matches in USA Pro. They defeated Simon/Striker before they were tag team champions. Unfortunately, they haven't had a shot to win those titles. The CSC have had great matches against the DRS, Solution, Simon/Striker, Skinhead Ivan/Zena, Mikey/Wayne and more. The CSC have been loyal to USA Pro and as of right now, their loyalty hasn't been rewarded. I understand loyalty can only take you so far, (I mean who wants to see Mr. Big win anything) but when you put loyalty with great match after great match, you should be rewarded. The CSC have also just "been there" for USA Pro and haven't had a storyline since the wedding angle back in April of '03.

WXW- Going out in the first round of the Samoan Cup was a slap in the face. Watching them go out like that really triggered this column. I was just in shock. The CSC are great tag team wrestlers and have honed their craft up and down the east coast as well as the Far East. The CSC have had an off/on relationship with WXW, as they aren't regulars. They have had great matches there. Maybe if WXW pushed them as a serious threat to the championship, instead of fodder for the Untouchables, the CSC would be full timers.

ROH- This is one that gets me. You think the whole time RF was there he would've gave the belts to the CSC! The CSC were a main part of early ROH shows and the crowd was 100% behind them. To this day- the CSC have not received a title shot for those tag team championships. ROH promotes honor, so I think the honorable thing to do would be to give one of the hardest working tag teams today a chance to prove in front of the largest "smart" audience in the world what the CSC could do.

World 1- Probably the only promotion that recoginizes the true talents of the CSC. While World 1 is more of a serious puroresu promotion, the CSC are part of the core roster. Working World 1, translated into a 2 day tour of Japan, where the CSC got to work the legendary Dick Togo. World 1 is new, so I think it's only a matter of time before the CSC are wearing championship gold there.

The CSC have done some shots for other promotions, but these are the main promotions they have worked for. From what I know, the CSC have no heat with anyone and have been consumate professionals at every show they have been to. They have had PAW matches, they have had comedy matches, they even were part of one of the best main events (in my opinion) in ICW's history. (3/15 w/Mikey Whipwreck vs Corino/LeGrande/Anderson).

The purpose of me writing is this is to open up people's eyes. The CSC are not just gimmick wrestlers. While they can just be gimmick wrestlers for a match, with a strong storyline, the CSC can wrestle with anyone. It is time to stop using the CSC as enhancement talent or as a popcorn match. It is now time for the indies to get gayer then ever, with the CSC fucking each other all the way to the top!

I am proud to say I know Low Life Louie Ramos, and he's been a CSC supporter since day 1. I'd like to thank Louie for opening up my eyes on this issue with some of his recent comments on the DOI hotline. Louie, I'm jumping on your bandwagon on this one.

I hope that CSC fans such as myself and Louie will see the CSC get big time matches soon. It is time for the CSC to get the ball or balls in their case, and see what they can do with it. I know they are capable of putting a promotion on their shoulders. It is time for the CSC to be rewarded for their great matches and loyalty to the indy fans and circuit in general. Hopefully Mace Mendoza and Buff-E get their shot.
