JAPW 6/28 McReview

Note: This is the third motherfucking time I'm doing this. I had this almost done, when boom, my power went out. Of course I don't save shit, so wham I was fucked in the goatass. Then I started doing this again, and got to intermission, and boom power outage again. Hopefully third time is a charm and I'm saving this review as I go along. I'm sorry for the delay. It is frustrating to write the same stuff over and over and I was just going to give up, but JAPW put on a really good and monumental show and I couldn't just blow it off. I hope this review comes off alright, as I am going to try to put as much time as possible into making every point I originally had in the first write-up.

With the "woe-is-me" and the "Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-ing" out of the way, here we go:"

Welcome everyone to another belated McReview, here on the DOI. We've covered this show alot already on the site, as the big news coming out of this show was the return of Dan Maff. Make sure to check the DOI main page for all the fallout news we've posted already.

This is going to be a quick review, in terms of match talk, but I will get in-depth about the angle developments. Time is of the essence, as I'm on vacation here in beautiful AC. Let's get right into it:

JAPW
6/28
Refs: Hanson & Bennett
Ring Announcer: Fat Frank
Attendance: JAPW is claiming 800+, while I'd say it was around 700. Regardless, a great crowd for a summer show.

Before the show, long time JAPW fan, John Fallon was bleeding like a stuck pig all over the building. Something happened where his ankle gave away and a vein popped. The way the blood was pouring out, it looked like his ankle was experiencing Mass Transit II. He had to be stretchered out of the building to be looked at, but was back at the show during the main event. Hopefully he's ok, as he was getting more blood from his ankle than most wrestlers do on sick blade jbos.

Four Way Dance
Don Juan d. Chris Marval, Danny Matthews & Scott McKenzie
This was a fast paced opener. These four guys are from Rudy Boy Gonzales school in Texas. They had a meaningless match, because no one really knew who they were and they were basically just doing tons of high spots. The match was pretty much "look what I can do" and hope that they impressed managment to bring them back. Lots of big moves in this one, which I thought might've hurt later matches in the show, but when the show was over, this match helped the show and didn't hurt it. Don Juan wins with a backcracker variation.

After the match, Don Juan tried getting Fat Frank, who was doing the ring announcing, to dance, but Fat Frank no sold that mofo.

JAPW announced a 9/20 return date to Jersey City, which will be part of a double shot weekend. JAPW is also running on 8/16, their Bayonne return show.

Eddie Kingston d. Danny Demanto
There was a lot of hype for Kingston by JAPW going into this match, but to me, this match was treated like any other bout Kingston's been in.

There was alot of good crowd heat for this. Both guys were very over with the fans. At one point in the match, Danny almost killed Kingston with one of them fancy Taz suplexes. Kingston would go on to return the favor, and the move would pick up the win.

Decent match here, but I think their other encounters that I've seen were better. Perhaps because when they fought on other shows, they were in the main event spot, rather than second match.

The Nigerian Nightmares d. Chris Dickerson & Chase Delmonte
Odd to see Chase back, with no real program or anything. I've heard lots of good things about him.

Dickerson leaves during the match, leaving Chase to take the beating and the pinfall. The crowd was really into the Nightmares. It was funny because on the JAPW board after the 5/31 show, everyone thought Fat Frank was pulling an NWS Panzarino by using the Nightmares, but at this show everyone was popping.

On Dickerson, he is now doing an angle where he is going to pick fights with message board fans. I guess that makes sense since Dickerson belongs on the other side of the rail at JAPW shows and not in the ring. Fat Frank needs to stop booking some of these guys who just don't belong yet. Indy wrestlers will need places to get their feet wet and learn, but let them do that outside of JAPW. That's what places like ACE, NWS, ECPW are for. JAPW also needs to realize when fans say they don't want to see a guy, that's not good heat, that's please stop booking him heat.

If JAPW would take the same attitude when fans ask to see a new guy as they do when the fans ask to stop seeing some guys, Wes Draven & Pinkie Sanchez would probably have roster spots already.

POSTMATCH: The Nigerian Nightmares put out an open challenge. The Heavy Hitters, Mack & Havok, came out to destory the Nightmares with Havok even hitting a huge samoan drop for one of the biggest pops of the night, due to the sheer display of power vs the size of the guy he picked up landing.

I think this is a huge step down for the Heavy Hitters. I know JAPW wasn't thrilled with Mack's blog this week where Mack kinda was setting up angles without JAPW knowing about it, but after reading Mack's blog and talking to JAPW, I really don't think Mack was wrong either. Maybe the way he went about it, but this is a filler B feud for the HH. Then again, a feud like this keeps the Heavy Hitters getting more bookings, so I'm happy to see that, but at the same time, a HH/NN match might just kill off the lure and gimmick of the NN since the HH should not be selling for the mumbo-jumbo Boogeyman bullshit. Let me say I am a fan of the NN gimmick and think it's a great undercard gimmick, but I think HH should be in the thick of the tag title chase.

Bandido Jr. d. Corvis Fear by DQ
Corvis Fear, returning to JAPW here, while not a wrestler "ROH is creaming their pants about", did get streamers and a welcome back chant. I can confirm this wasn't his family giving him this reaction, but the faithful & loyal JAPW fans giving him this respect.

This was an ok match, that was more about the angle than the match. When Bandido Jr. had the match won, the returning (only off for 2 shows I believe) Crowbar ran out. Crowbar beat up Ref Hanson for Bandido could get a pinfall victory. Crowbar & Corvis then started beating up Bandido, so we now have a new tag team in JAPW. Maybe it was just me, but you could see the disappointment in Crowbar's face as he was doing this angle.

Let me say that I appreciate what JAPW is doing. They are trying to book tag team wrestling on the indy level. That is very difficult to do. JAPW has really focused on their tag division and trying to build up several new teams. I appreciate that. LAX are top dogs, and outside of the Heavy Hitters, I don't see any teams as credible or believable enough to beat LAX. Nothing against Corvis or Crowbar, but I don't see them the ones to knock LAX off their pedestal, so to me this tag team is a waste.

This is now what feels like Corvis's 5th or so tag team project. Does anyone think it will go anywhere? I think Corvis is a perennial JAPW Jersey State/2nd belt champion contender. If he ever won that belt, the JAPW fans would buy it & support it, while other indy fans would probably say "What's a Corvis Fear? Doesn't Corvis Fear mean "Raven" in Latin? (Look it up, it does)" Corvis was over here, so I don't get what's the point of rushing into a tag team.

Crowbar, to me, when he first came back to JAPW last year, was a guy who could be built up as a credible world champion contender. This is a huge step down for him. Losing to Danny Demanto twice didn't help him, because Danny has lost every match he's had since, but still Crowbar could be a big singles guy. Why is Crowbar even running out on this match? Crowbar easily defeated Bandido several shows ago. Why does he care about some guy he handled with ease and is three times the size of? What makes Corvis so attractive to team with? Corvis & Crowbar are professionals and will do what JAPW asks, but I feel both guys are better off as singles wrestlers. This team feels too forced to me.

Let me reiterate though, I do appreciate JAPW at least trying with their tag team division. There were alot of tag matches tonight. Tag Team wrestling on the indy level is tough for many reasons. It is expensive, as you have to pay 4 guys for a match. The indies are full of unreliable people, so you have to make sure four people show up and just not two. Then when you want to be serious, you need more than two teams, and JAPW is going all out right now. At least they are trying new things, and we'll see where this goes, but I think Bandido teaming up with someone from his past would be more beneficial than Crowbar floundering in mid-card teams.

Das Übermenschen (Formerly the Gemini Twins) w/Skinhead Ivan d. The Logan Brothers

As mentioned above, JAPW is trying out new teams. The Gemini were lacking talent-wise and not getting over the last few shows that they were on. JAPW now has them repackaged as a goose-steppin, German lovin', sauerkraut eatin' sons of bitches, all under the watch of indy racist Skinhead Ivan. Let me make it clear that this is a character of Ivan's and not his real life personality, as for some reason, in the past, people really think Ivan is this Heil Hitler motherfucker.

This gimmick is something right out of the 80's and it remains to see if it will work. The biggest thing here is that JAPW is acknowledging a team didn't get over and instead of just dropping them, JAPW is trying to do something with them and giving them a second chance.

If The Gemini didn't have this German gimmick, this match would look like four clones going at it. With the gimmick, you knew who was heel and knew what's what.

The Logans need a gimmick or some mic time. They are two white dudes, albeit while talented, haven't been able to really connect with JAPW fans because JAPW parades them out there with no explanation and fans don't know what to do, so they sit on their hands.

This match was what it was, and the start of the push for Das Ubermenschen. This is a mid-card team that could work. I don't get why the Heavy Hitters, an A -team for JAPW, weren't given something more to do. After all the Germans could've ran in on the Nigerians. I mean seriously, shouldn't JAPW give us what world history couldn't - the war to settle the score, Adolf Hitler vs Nelson Mandela?

This was an ok match, nothing special, but it served its purpose.

Christian Cage d. Jimmy Rave
This was a paint-by-the-numbers and a very predictable match. Was anyone not able to predict this?

This was another match that served its purpose. Basically, JAPW has been booking one TNA match a month, with the hopes of drawing new fans, who see the show, and then stick around for future shows to see the JAPW roster. It's not the first time a promotion has done this and it's a smart idea, and ever since JAPW has been doing it, they've seen their crowds go up. While this match is isolated from everything else on the show, it does its job of getting people there, although anyone could've had Rage's spot, as the non-JAPW fans were there for Christian.

Rave looked off here and noticeably sick. I don't know if he had something, but he looked like he was going to puke at any moment.

Cage was a huge babyface here and gave the fans what they wanted, even pulling off the 5-second pose.

Lots of stalling in this one, but the crowd soaked it all in. Christian had the crowd hooked from the second he did his promo. The crowd was just as hot when Cage put Rave away with the Unprettier.

INTERMISSION
The wrestlers cleaned up on gimmick sales, especially Cage who got the Tom Brandi spot on the show.

For the WSU Championship
(c) Angel Orsini d. "Soul Sister" Jana
Jana, who looks like she's embarking on her own singles career, got a shot against the champion to see what she had. Jana came up short in this one, but had a good showing.

Obviously I have a vested interest in this match and while it wasn't as over as the Roxx/Orsini match, it did its job. JAPW was stuck in a rut with their womens division, as for many years it was April Hunter beating whatever friend she got into JAPW that month. When April became a headcase and difficult to deal with, JAPW moved on to Alicia, who dominated JAPW for nearly 3 years, beating whoever JAPW found for the month. When Alicia retired it was then Alexa's turn, but Alexa never got over the same way Alicia did, even if Alexa was booked in the same way. The WSU relationship allows fresh matches with fresh talent every show.

Angel gets the pin with a face plant/overdrive.

To answer some fan questions, the reason the match wasn't as high profile or perhaps why there wasn't a bigger name challenger was because WSU had a show a week ago and the theory was WSU wouldn't have enough proper time to build up a good match in just a week's time. WSU wanted to rely on their homegrown roster. Jana was over as a babyface while it looks like the crowd is trying to find out more about Angel Orsini.

To answer another fan question, the reason this match was in the "popcorn" spot was because both girls told WSU they were running late and they were switched to this spot on the show to ensure the match would happen. JAPW went above and beyond here.

Milano Collection AT d. Azraiel
I still haven't hopped on the MCAT bandwagon yet. Admittedly, I haven't seen much of his stuff, but he doesn't seem so super-special to me. Sometimes I think fans make more out of guys just because they are from Japan. If Azraiel had a "Made in Japan" sticker on his back, would JAPW take him out of the rut they've booked him in? Ever since doing his heel turn on Lethal, NOTHING has happened with Azraiel. I mean didn't JAPW forget to book Azraiel last show or the show before that?

This was a good match with some fans even telling me they thought it was the best of the night. I enjoyed it but I still need to see more of MCAT before jumping on his jock like other fans. I have heard JAPW wants to use MCAT on a full-time basis, as long as he's in America, hence him getting the win here. Azraiel needs something. Does everyone forget that it was only a few short years ago that Azraiel was overshadowing Maff's second title reign? Does anyone remember that Azraiel was main eventing JAPW shows and not Teddy Hart or Maff? Anyone remember that this is the same guy who helped propel Jay Lethal to superstardom after their insane Light Heavyweight title matches? Rodney Dangerfield must be rolling in his grave with the lack of respect for our former horned champion.

MCAT wins after a northern lights suplex.

For the JAPW Tag Team Championships
(c) LAX (Homicide & Hernandez) d. The SAT's (Jose & Joel Maximo)
Again, another predictable match. Is it just me? Feel free to email me at BULLSMC@aol.com and let me know your thoughts, but did anyone think the SAT's were going to win? While unless you were in the know, you weren't predicting what happened at the end of this show, but LAX matches are becoming very formulaic. LAX needs some credible challengers and real feuds. The Heavy Hitters match was rushed and wasted. The HH/LAX should've happened at the anniversary show. JAPW dropped the ball with that, as HH never got a real chance to get over because they squashed the same people Kevin Matthews and whoever the new flavor of the month was squashing.

The HH are the top tag team JAPW has that's homegrown and the match should've been built up more before it happened. Now that it's happened and the fans want a rematch and their was a discrepancy in the first match, JAPW should feed off of that, because LAX/HH was the first LAX match that was unpredictable and had somewhat a backstory to it.

This match felt like an extended squash to me. Even the way LAX won was just like "wow". LAX won with their "B" finisher, the backbreaker by Hernandez followed by the splash from Homicide for the pinfall win.

The SAT's have become "attraction" wrestlers for JAPW, meaning that they don't need full-time roster spots. The SAT's come in and out of JAPW and are just as over every time. Perhaps absence makes the heart grow fonder? I'm pretty sure it's absence and not abstinence that makes the heart grow fonder anyway.

This was an ok match, but the belts were never in jeopardy at any time. This match lacked creative false finishes and I don't think the SAT's ever looked like they had a chance. I like LAX and a fan of them with the belts, but they really need some credible opponents that have been built up. JAPW is focusing on their tag division now, so I can see it happening soon.

POSTMATCH: Homicide cut a promo challenging any team out there, no matter what their promotion affiliation is. He even mentioned the HH by name, but the HH didn't come out for whatever reason. Homicide looked pissed, perhaps foreshadowing the surprise later on. Homicide even had his mic cut off, as he was going off about wanting competition. Who's left for LAX now, outside of random superteam pairings?

For the JAPW Championship
(c) Kenny Omega d. (JAPW NJ State Champion) The Grim Reefer
Just to clarify, this match was not title-for-title.

This was a very good match, even if Reefer got hurt early on. Now by taking the loss here, Reefer could always use the "I got hurt" speech to set up a rematch. Even with the loss, Reefer came off as a credible opponent who would be accepted as a challenger by the fans.

Omega is in a dangerous territory right now, as his last match with Demanto was the pots/pans/weapons/jump through anything metal or wood. When that Omega/Danny match happened, nothing else on the show had outside fighting or weapons, so the match came off that much more explosive. Now when Omega doesn't do that, it feels like he's not reaching the bar that was set in that match.

Reefer and Omega did brawl a bit and use some weapons, but it was nothing like the Demanto/Omega match. Omega is a great in ring wrestler and hopefully that style will get over, where he won't have to do the other stuff just to get pops.

Before the match, both guys did promos at 11:30 at night, which some might think is a bit ridiculous, since it was a long show. However, to me, it was worth hearing Reefer call Omega a "Canadian fag". Hey that's not homophobic, that's not racist, that's just American baby!

I thought the end of this match was GREAT BOOKING & GREAT EXECUTION by JAPW & Kenny Omega. After a very long and fun match, Omega started going into Low Ki mode, even mocking the former champion. Omega did all of Low Ki's moves, poses and knuckle scraping struts. Omega did the Low Ki kicks to Reefer and mimmicked Ki's style. Omega then hit a Ki Krusher on Reefer, before putting Reefer away with a move of his own, a Half Boston Crab for the victory. The crowd was now trained to watch the JAPWtron for Ki's video.

Since it was hyped that a former JAPW champion was returning, at this point, everyone stood up because they knew it was happening. I want to make this point and hope everyone reads it. By the time Omega won to the time the show was over, everyone and I mean everyone was on their feet. No one bolted to the door, no one sat down, everyone was standing looking at the entrance way. To me, that shows JAPW did a great job of selling this angle and it shows the fans cared. While some may say JAPW should've just had Maff run out without the hype of a surprise, I disagree. We are in the indy wrestling business. JAPW doesn't have the luxury of TV. You have to do things different on the indy level because you don't have what a national company has in terms of exposure and production. The summer time is a bad time for indy wrestling as draws are usually down. By advertising this suprise, it piques interest and it helped boost the crowd. Plus, when everyone was standing, you know JAPW did their job.

JAPW played it off well. The lights went out. Low Ki's music hit and Low Ki's titan tron played. A small KI KI KI chant broke out. JAPW had everyone in their palms. I love this stuff and appreciate it and I can't put over enough how JAPW had everyone hooked.

All of a sudden the sounds and images of Ki, turned into something that we haven't heard or saw in three years - Dan Maff, formerly Maff of Da Hit Squad.

I'll recap the angle first, then my thoughts.

Maff came out to a huge reaction. A Huge "MAFF! MAFF! MAFF!" chant. This shows that the crowd that was here has been following JAPW for at least 3 years and weren't fair-weathered TNA fans.

Here are some pics of the new Maff, credit Marshall of the JAPW.net message board:

Maff came out and soaked in a crowd reaction, his first in three years. Maff cut a simple babyface promo and said he was happy to be back. He then teased that he was gunning for the belt that he never lost and faced Omega. However, Maff turned and laid out Reefer & Danny Demanto, who was there to save Reefer. Omega and Maff beat up Reefer & Demanto, and Omega was happy, joyous and gleeful as Maff returned to his original gimmick - The Hired Assassin.

While Maff was in the middle of this heel turn, the crowd starting chanting BURNING HAMMER. Maff pleased them with two, laying out Reefer and Danny with a Burning Hammer each. The reaction for all of this was insane. I have to say, I was surprised there wasn't a loud Homicide or LAX chant. Did the fans forget? While Maff was heeling it up here, he was treated as a face because he was back.

Here's my take on the actual angle. I thought it was well done and I can't say enough about it. The only thing I didn't agree with but understand, was turning Maff heel right away. I dont' think JAPW knew how the crowd was going to react. Was Maff going to be hated? Was Maff going to get a pop? Would the crowd even know who he was? Maff got a positive reaction and I think they should've ran with it. They turned him heel in 2 seconds, or at least tried to. I would've waited on that a bit. Then again, this goes back to what I was saying before. We are all on the indy level- fans, promoters, wrestlers, etc. Sometimes you need to rush angles or do too much because you don't have the time to stretch stuff out when you run every 4-8 weeks. So it's understandable that JAPW wanted to establish Maff as a heel, although in a perfect world it doesn't happen right away.

So yea, this was an explosive way to end the show and JAPW went above and beyond to deliver Maff as a surprise. Next time JAPW advertises a surprise it will have credibility because of how they delivered here.

On Dan Maff returning, this is what we were talking about last month on the DOI. This has been in the works for several months. Surprisingly, Low Ki was someone pushing for Maff's return and JAPW even tinkered with the idea of giving Maff's Omega's spot, where Maff would've been the one who left Low Ki laying in the beginning of the year.

I am happy Maff is back and that everything has been settled. Maff does not come back without Homicide OKing it and it's great to see Homicide help JAPW out when JAPW needs it.

JAPW is going to be hurt by TNA soon. TNA's house show schedule is getting more aggressive. TNA can pull talent off any show they want. It's their contracted talent, and the indy guys are just lucky to be playing with it from time to time.

There are a few indy guys who truly can draw a crowd and are on a level that no one else is on. Before that's misinterperted, I'm not comparing anything to WWE but in the landscape of it, there are some indy guys who really have "it" and then there's the rest of them. JAPW has been using one of these guys for the last 4 years, in Teddy Hart. Hart, love him or hate him, is someone people want to see what he will do next. However Hart has been unreliable for JAPW at certain points in the past. He's also in Mexico so it's a very expensive flight. Maff is a homegrown guy who lives 10 minutes away.

Also on the Hart subject, did anyone really care about the Hart/Kazarian feud? Booking problems led to these guys not appearing on the show, but did anyone care? Did anyone notice?

Maff is a homegrown guy. When he left wrestling, he left when he was peaking and in his prime. He was the JAPW Champion and a ROH Tag Champion when he left. He was in high demand. When RFVideo helped run some promotions in 2005, the plans were to give the belt and build around Maff. Arguably, if he didn't leave, he'd have a TNA job right now.

Maff did fuck up. Maff made a mistake that he will live to regret for the rest of his life, because he will play the what if game for those three years he missed. He paid his time. We live in a world of second chances and this is Maff's. If Homicide can forgive him to come back, then so can the fans. I know there are no plans for Homicide/Maff to feud because JAPW thinks it would be cheap and does not want to make money on peoples personal lives, which is why LAX will do their thing and Maff will do his.

I got so many emails about Maff being a pedophile and how it originated on this site because we covered the people who said it. Homicide did call Maff a pedophile, but knowing what happened, nothing that Maff did was a pedophile act. There was never a Homicide's sister in this or Homicide's cousin as some morons have reported. There was never any underage person involved in any of this. Everyone also thinks it's a sex thing, which I guess is the American way of thinking.

Knowing Maff, knowing Maff's friends, Maff's friends in JAPW management and even Maff's enemies, he is not a pedophile. He is not hanging out at McDonald Jungle Gyms reading to spring out and devour victims. When the pedophile word was used, I believe it was used as an insult and as a way to show how much hatred people had for the guy. I'm not going to speak for Homicide, but when he put it out there, it had nothing to do with his situation and I think he put it out there to really show the intense hatred he had for him.

Other wrestlers went on to call him a pedophile and we covered that on the DOI. I don't know if they really belived what they said or just ran with the rumors. I can confirm the Maff/Homicide stuff was never a pedophile issue. Maff just was very disloyal to a guy who helped him. Maff didn't just bite the hand that feeds, he swallowed it, shit it out and flushed it all away. It's time we all move on past that now.

If JAPW really thought Maff was the p-word, they'd never bring him back. JAPW is a family man company. And before I get the "LOLZ MIC FORGOT RF LOLZ", I'm not going to get into this broken record, but again, show me any charges or any kids that alleges RF of any activity. It doesn't exist. "How to Catch a Predator", the show that worked with Perverted Justice, just lost a huge lawsuit because of the way they do things. Don't believe everything you see on TV. Sure it doesn't help RF, that he parades around with young guys at shows who hang at his table, who are of legal age, but that's why people are still talking about his situation because he doesn't do anything to help himself. Especially if two of the kids at his table do look like Aaron Carter, but I digress.

Bottom line Maff, as far as I know, is not a pedophile, so can we all move past this? The people trying to talk about this and putting it out there are JAPW haters who want to take the focus away from a positive element from JAPW and focus on a rumor.

I am happy for Maff and JAPW. It is no secret that I'm a huge JAPW fan and happy to see anything that makes their company stronger. Maff can fill the holes that the TNA guys will leave and that Hart may have left. This makes JAPW stronger and has everyone talking JAPW. The summer time is a tough time, and JAPW is as hot as ever. Don't sell Maff short, he is a guy who can singlehandedly make JAPW one of the top indies around.

I'm interested in seeing where JAPW goes. Obviously, destroying Demanto is up next, followed with some tags with Omega. I'm guessing Reefer has a reason for Maff too.

I would like to see JAPW at least acknowledge Homicide/Maff, even if they aren't building that match. Even if to get Maff more heel heat, they say Maff has placed a restraining order. Maff is feuding with Demanto & Reefer, two doghouse guys. Maybe Maff can do something that he's trying to rid JAPW of all the doghouse guys who turned their back on him, and maybe that's how you sell a match with Homicide down the line when the match becomes business and not a personal one.

There are alot of things JAPW can do here. JAPW just has to make sure not to drop the ball and end Maff's return with Teddy Hart pinning Maff and Homicide at the same time. Yea that's a joke, but for some reason, whenever JAPW is hot with a wrestler, Teddy Hart beats the guy out of nowhere.

I talked more about Maff's return on the DOI Main Page, so check it out there as I'm all over the place now, but for real, I'm happy to see Maff back as this can only help JAPW, and isn't that what us JAPW fans care about the most?

Final McWord
One of the most memorable JAPW shows in history. This is a show we'll all be talking about for some time.

I liked JAPW setting up alot of new teams and angles, but they have to be careful not to do too much at once or it could get confusing.

We'll have a shitload of JAPW news and notes this week. It's now time to hit the blackjack tables!

Overall
Perhaps JAPW's best show all year, if at least the most important one.
