NWA TNA IMPACT Review 1
Sorry for the lateness on this review, but
it was unavoidable. Anyway, just to reiterate from last weeks review, I get NWA TNA Impact on
Tuesdays, instead of Friday's like everyone else. I'm going to try to do these reviews weekly,
so hopefully I can find time. Well let's get right into it.
NWA TNA IMPACT!
Announcers: Don West and Mike Tenay
We pay respect to Ronald Reagan, then we go to the wild fans of Orlando, Florida.
Kid Kash w/Dallas d. Amazing Red
This was a great opener. Second straight week in a row that Red opened up TNA Impact. No
complaints here. Dallas is to Diesel as Kid Kash is to Shawn Michaels, but minus the talent.
Not that Kash is not a good wrestler, but no one is HBK. Red hit a beautiful flipping plancha
on Kash. Kash hit 2 lionsaults and went for a third to finish off Red, but Red got the
knees up. At one point in this match, Red hit a top rope huranacarana. That was fucking
perfect. Red goes to finish Kash off, but Kash gets out of the way of an elbow. Kash then
hits the moneymaker for the 1-2-3.
This match would probably steal an indy show, but due to IMPACT rules (with a 10:00 minute
running clock on every match), this match was only about 6 minutes or so long. More on this
at the end of the review.
We then do the commercial gimmick, where we find out that these TNA folk have a PPV on Wednesday night. We then hear West cream his fucking pants about how it's less than 10 dollars to watch Jeff Jarrett play Triple H for 2 hours.
We come back and we're with Shane Douglas, the official backstage correspondent. Yes, Shane
Douglas is the backstage interviewer. You can pick one of the following lines to summarize
Shane's new job:
1- "How the mighty have fallen."
2- "Shane needs the money."
3- "Shane is making good money for just asking questions."
4- "Hey Mic, he's injured you asshole after a 10 year plus career and loves the sport of pro
wrestling."
Anyway, Shane is with Dusty Rhodes. I'm still waiting for him to bust out a TNA line, like how
he did in WCW. Remember, "Dubbya Cee Dubbya where da big boys play." Maybe Dusty can pull
something out like "En Dubbya Ah Tee En Ah, where the indies and former dubbya dubbya ee
castoffs play." Apparently, Dusty Rhodes is the judge of the upcoming AJ Styles/Kazarian X
Title match. Maybe I'm missing something, since I'm a broke fuck and can't afford the PPV, but
why do they need "special guest judges" to judge matches. Isn't that what the internet is for?
This is broken up with Vinny Ru letting Dusty he needs a word with him. I thought Vince Russo
was trying to wear a white collar now?
For the NWA TNA X-Title
(c) AJ Styles d. Frankie Kazarian
Wow, following up Red, with an AJ Styles match. 2 back to back good opening matches. Gotta give
props to TNA on that. I thought this would easily be the main event. This match was really
good, considering it was "TV'd out", meaning that the guys didn't get enough time in the ring
that they should've. Before the opening minute expired, AJ hit 2 beautiful dropkicks and a back
drop on Kazarian. Kazrian came back with a DDT and a legdop, and not even 3 minutes in, we're
going to see some more commercials.
They stop the match so we can find out about other matches going on Wednesday night. Word.
And we're back from commercials. Thankfully, the tapes were still rolling in case anything
earth shattering happened. After a ddt and russian legsweeps for 2 by Kazarian, AJ comes back
with a Styles Clash for the 1-2-3 at around the 6 minute mark TV time, 10 minute match time.
Pretty solid match, which really only wets the wrestling appetite, which is a good move on TNA's
part. More on that later.
POSTMATCH: Kid Kash and Dallas attack AJ Styles. Dallas hits a huge powerbomb on Styles. Kash
is here to make an impact on the X-Division.
We go to David Young, who has lost 54 consecutive matches. I don't know if hyping that stat really counts as giving him a push.
More commercials and we find out that TNA has DVD's, websites, a ppv show and more! They don't have house shows, yet.
3 Live Kru (Konnan/Ron "The Truth" Killings/Brian "Don't call me the Roaddog" Jammes" d.
The Naturals (Andy Douglas/Chase Stevens)/David Young
Pretty blah match. We see that TNA has a Spanish Announce Team too, and I'm not talking about
The Maximos. This match was pretty much a 3 minute squash match to hype up a storyline. Killings
is obviously the best wrestler on his team, and it's good to see Konnan/Jammes accept that
and make him look better. Killings hits an axe kick on David Young for the pinfall, extending
Young's losing record to 55 straight at around the three minute mark.
POSTMATCH: The NWA TNA Heavyweight Champion, Jeff Jarrett (That's J-E-Double F, haha, J-A-double
R-E double T, Double J, ha ha, Jeff Jarrett) Even though he's coming out for only a promo,
he gets fireworks, smoke and the firecrakers. Nepotism is lovely. Anyway, he's got beef with the
3LK, due to Killings pinning Jarrett in a non-title match at the PPV this past Wed. Dusty
Rhodes, the judge dammit, comes out and is here to lay down the law. He babbles about how
not only is Ron Killings black, he is a man. Dusty gives his Martin Luther King speech about
equality, and says on 6/23, at the 2nd Anniversary show, Ron Killings will get his title shot
at Double J. I'm taking bets right now, that match between Killings/Jarrett will go 20 minutes,
with lots of false finishes, before Jarrett whacks him with a guitar and hits the stroke for the
win.
More TNA plugs, and we're back from commericals and we go to our next match.
Monty Brown d. Sonny Siaki
This match was pretty poo poo. Pretty much Monty Brown dominated for 90 seconds, then hit
a shoulder tackle, which he calls the intimidating (Because it's named after cat food) POUNCE.
After hitting the Pounce, Brown gets the pin on Siaki at the 2 minute mark. This match was like
a RAW match right before the main event, except that they weren't women.
POSTMATCH: The NWA TNA Tag Team Champions, AMW come out to stare down Brown. Tenay lets us know
that Brown/Abyss will be challenging the champs this Wednesday for 10 dollars on PPV.
More commercials and a NWA TNA Flashback with Brian Ulacher and Johnny Fairplay. I could care less about both, but it's probably cool to see to get new fans. We also see Sting there, so that will probably keep people tuned in if they are a casual wrestling fan.
We talk about the feud between Raven and Sabu. Apparently The Shiek trained Raven. These guys swore not to fight each other because they were trained by the same guy. Well that logic kinda gets shot to shit when Sabu feuded with RVD for 3 years. Anyway, we see a video package, and we hype up these two for the PPV.
World Cup Match
Team Canada (Petey Williams, Eric Young, and Bobby Rude) w/Scott D'Amore
d. Team Mexico (Heavy Metal, Mr Aguila
and Abismo Negro)
I hate these World Cup matches. They are just there, but for no reason at all. This should've
been the second match, and AJ and Kazarian should've been the main. The match itself wasn't
that bad, but it wasn't anything to type about, so I won't. The finish saw Scott D'Amore, in
the evil manager mode, grab Metals foot on the top rope. This set up Bobby Rude hitting a
death valley driver for the pin. Total time eclipsed for a 6 man tag - 5 men. That's about 50
seconds per guy!
POSTMATCH: Team Canada attacks. Hector Garza comes out to make the save for his fellow hombres.
Team NWA (Lynn/Sabin/Elix Skipper) come out and brawl with Canada, since they have a 6 man
flag match on th PPV. Don West lets us know we're out of time and this takes us to the...
Final McWord
Another decent show by NWA TNA. I thought last weeks edition was stronger. What I noticed this
week, is that alot of matches were short. I guess by making the matches shorter, you don't give
away anything, and force people to buy the PPV to see the wrestlers really go. On the flip side
of that coin, if Sonny Siaki loses in 2 minutes this week, but then goes 20 minutes the next
week, it makes him and his opponents look bad.
I like how TNA has been putting on their main stars on Impact. AJ Styles is the guy who really makes people come back for more, so it's probably wise to have him on every show then hype him up for a big PPV Match, just like how they did last week before his X Title win.
I thought the matches were better last week, due to them being longer giving the wrestlers more time to get shit off, but the matches this week were good for what they are trying to get across.
Overall- I'm hooked on IMPACT and looking forward to see how the next upcoming shows are.
