CHIKARA founder Mike Quackenbush was this week's guest on talkIMPACTradio. TI Radio made it's Thursday Night debut at 9pm Eastern (And will be broadcasting at this time every week indefinitely).
Quack was around for the full hour front to back and was an amazing listen. There was much more to this interview and everyone should go check out the replay now at http://www.talkIMPACTradio.com
There was far too many jokes and witty remarks to recap but there was an amazing balance of laughter and information. Here are some notes.
-A pun was made about the Monday Night Wars and then Swarley segway'd into "good television," by asking Quack about LOST. Quack put over Lost's amazing storytelling abilities and admitted that the show influences alot of how he contributes to CHIKARA.
-Mike talked about the importance of having dependable "characters," in any storytelling venture. You need a "cast" that you can rely on.. and not be suspended by a Wellness Policy, etc. He has that reliable cast.
-Mike was asked if it's hard booking himself on a roster and finding a balance of not overusing himself but at the same time not underusing himself since he's arguably the best wrestler on the roster. Quack said he has a unique dynamic because CHIKARA is populated by people he had a hand in training. He said when you build guys from the ground up you get to see their weaknesses and strengths. And the best thing he can do is always make sure to showcase their strengths and hide their weaknesses.
-Mike was asked about the possibility of anybody from Totally Tool Wrestling in CHIKARA. Mike said he wasn't extremely familiar with TTW, but knew some people that worked there. The group collectively agreed that the company is defunct. Mike said that the company was successful in getting a sanction by NWA.. They were NWA: THE MOON. The gang jokes about a wrestling company doing shows on the moon and the amount of high spots that could be done on the moon (NO GRAVITY!)
-A listener submitted question asked Mike what it was like working with Johnny Saint. Mike said wrestling Johnny was almost like an out of body wrestling experience. He idolized Johnny and never thought he'd meet him, yet alone wrestle home. He wrestled against and teamed with him and said the whole deal was just a great experience. He said Johnny was very stand out guy. He said he and Johnny still trade emails about once or twice a week.
-Swarley mentioned how CHIKARA and DragonGate USA have been working together. Swarley asked if there's an official relationship going on. Mike said it first started at a party.. It was a little awkward the next day but after a few weeks it was warming up. Swarley asked if he went on facebook right now would it say they're in a relationship. Fun part of the show, great example of the show's nonstop witty humor throughout the show. Mike then put over DGUSA has having 250 shows a year. You have to plan things way in advance to work with them.
-Mike was asked what he could tell us about King of Trios that we don't already know. He said the concession stand will be having new pretzels. Much softer and bigger this year, there's an exclusive. More witty humor. Mike then said stay tuned to the website for an announcement about Team Mexico members.
-A caller asked Mike if he thought tag team wrestling was a lost art. Mike said he most definitely thinks multi-man wrestling is a lost art. Growing up that was something he loved and it kind of dwindled away. Swarley then put over CHIKARA as making the multi-man type matches one of his favorite kinds of matches. Quack recalled the dark days of WWF when they would always have random 8 man tags in the pay per views that always had like The Smoking Guns or the Headshrinkers. And how they'd put all these random guys together and give them 2 minutes. They were horrible. He said on October 10, 1996.. Michinoku Pro had a main event 10 man tag.. 35 minutes long.. His favorite match of all time. He said the match was so amazing that he had to watch it again immediately. He credits that match for alot of the inspiration behind CHIKARA. One of the most rewarding things that he could do is make matches that emulate that match. Mike made an analogy to a painting. The more guys in the match, the more colors for the painting.
-Mike was asked what his most rewarding moment in wrestling has been. In February of 2002, Mike was fortunate to wrestle Eddie Guerrero. Mike said he was somehow lucky enough to be booked against Eddie. He was a huge Eddie fan and bam, now he was wrestling him. They were giving 'x' amount of time to wrestle. They were given a cue and Mike assumed Eddie missed it, "Eddie, I think they want us to wrap it up." And Eddie retorted, "That's a shame because I'm really enjoying wrestling with you right now." So that was pretty big. Mike was asked if there is footage of that match out there. Mike said the promoter was a bit of a bonehead and after jumping through hoops he finally got a tape of the match. And the tape was HORRIBLE quality. So much of his match with Eddie is just a memory, but perhaps it's better that way as perhaps it is greater than it really was in his mind.
