CZW Presents: An Afternoon of Main Events
Saturday, January 14th 2006
Philadelphia, PA @ The Former ECW Arena

Results by Big Cat (CZWrestling.com Columnist):
An Afternoon of Main Events: January 14th marked the first show of 2006 for Combat Zone Wrestling. With so much anticipation for this show and so many outrageous circumstances surrounding it, the fans came out in droves for An Afternoon of Main Events to see just what CZW had in store for them.

"Sweet 'N' Sour" Larry Sweeney vs. Excalibur: As is typical of both men, some words were exchanged prior to the opening bell. After the bell was rung, Larry Sweeney retained control for a good portion of this match. Once Excalibur got on the offensive, however, Sweeney's luck was up. Excalibur's attempt at a tombstone piledriver was blocked and reversed into a roll-up attempt, but Excalibur, thinking and reacting quickly, dropped to his knees and cradled the ICW/ICWA Texarkana Television Champion for the three count.

Niles Young vs. Cloudy: This match was a contrast of styles- the fast-paced, high-octane marijuana-influenced American lucha libre of Cloudy vs. the methodical, precise, focused attack of Niles Young. The match began with Cloudy's pacing taking the lead, and many arm drag variations displayed within the exchange. Eventually, back in the ring, Niles Young was able to mount an offense highlighted by a flapjack lung blower and a vertical suplex into a cutter. Cloudy looked like he was on the path to a comeback right up until his head scissors attempt was reversed into the NYPD.

Adam Flash vs. Heretic: Pandora played no role in this match, as she was conspicuous by her absence. Also conspicuous by his absence was one Nate Webb- scheduled to be Adam Flash's opponent in this match. This match pitted a relative newcomer to the sport against the wily veteran tactics of "The Ego". While Heretic's offense was both effective and impressive, he failed to weaken him enough to hit him with the top rope hurricanrana. Adam Flash saw it coming a mile away, and reversed it into a top rope powerbomb for the victory.

At this point, Ed O Mac looks to introduce our next contest, but is interrupted by "American Dragon" Bryan Danielson. He proclaims that he's too good for CZW, and was improperly received by the CZW crowd. It may have just been me, however, who felt that the "Shut the fuck up" chants were the proper reception for a man proclaiming himself to be above the CZW product in the middle of a CZW ring. Back on topic; After hearing so many of the remarks the Ring of Honor World Heavyweight had to make, Chris Hero made his way to the ring... but the ROH Champ had backup in Austin Aries and Roderick Strong- Ring of Honor World Tag Team Champions- as well as Nigel McGuiness (Ring of Honor Pure Wrestling Champion), who made their way through the crowd for the sabotage attempt- thwarted by Claudio Castagnoli and Super Dragon, then soon thereafter by the majority of the CZW locker room. After the ring cleared and Hero, Claudio, and Super Dragon celebrated a job well done by watching the ROH wrestlers scurry out through the crowd, The Blackout made their way to the ring and did a little bit of their own sabotaging. Maven Bentley demanded that the bell be rung, leading to...

The Blackout (Sabian, Ruckus, Eddie Kingston) vs. Chris Hero, Claudio Castagnoli, and Super Dragon:
One way to describe this match would be hectic. Months upon months of frustration for The Blackout were channeled into this match, with brutal strikes, slams, and assorted moves being thrown left and right by Sabian, Ruckus, and King. Hero, Claudio, and Dragon had their fair share of offense (including a standing La Nieblina Senton by Dragon followed by a tandem monkey toss splash by Hero and Claudio onto Kingston), but once The Blackout was able to isolate and triple team Claudio Castagnoli, that spelled the end. A frog stomp from the top rope onto the abdomen of the Swiss snob by Sabian signaled the conclusion the match-up.

CZW World Jr. Heavyweight Championship: In his first CZW World Junior Heavyweight Title defense of the New Year, Derek Frazier took on CZW newcomer Cheech. In this match, things went back and forth, with changes of momentum coming at various junctures in the match. At one point, Frazier hit an incredible hurricane tomikaze on Cheech, but was unable to put him down. After several attempts, Derek Frazier was able to hit Pure Impact to retain his title, but was sabotaged by Niles Young post-match. Cheech and Niles continued the beat down until Cloudy made the run-in, although not even that brought a stop to this brawl.

Joker vs. Justice Pain: Justice Pain and Joker collided in a number one contender's match for the CZW Iron Man Title (currently held by Kevin Steen). While this was put together as a wrestling match, tables and chairs became involved in multiple instances- one of which saw Joker sent from a table set up on the inside of the ring through a table on the outside of the ring. Joker was able to recover, though, and run Justice Pain into a table face-first several times before rolling him into a Regal Stretch-style submission hold for the victory.

After this match, intermission was called to set up the barbed wire for the night's main event. Before the four sides of the ring were enclosed, Nate Webb made his way out to the ring. He explained to the fans the reason he wasn't in the building for his scheduled match earlier- he was stuck in an airport after having his flight changed. Not by himself, however. His flight plans were changed by a secondary source... Nate Webb put the blame on the conniving ways of Pandora. Webb knew he wouldn't be able to have a match at that point... but he called out Adam Flash for a fight. Flash was glad to oblige him, and Webb and Flash brawled in the rope-less ring, on the floor, and all the way into the locker room.

No Ropes, Barbed Wire 3-Way Elimination Match:
After that intermission, fans realized that one of the matches wasn't going down as scheduled... the barbed-wire match was scheduled to pit Zandig and The Necro Butcher against each other. "The Boss", however, was not in any condition to compete. Therefore, Nick Gage and JC Bailey were taken out of their singles match and put inside the barbed wire with Necro Butcher. And I can tell you this... it was not a pleasant night for anyone inside that ring- including referee Derek Sabato, who was thrown into the barbed wire during the fray. After pinning JC Bailey, a shoeless Necro Butcher seemed to have obtained the Ultraviolent Underground Title, which Lobo brought out to present... but the title never made it into Necro Butcher's hands, as Lobo smashed him over the head with it! Nick Gage pinned the Butcher, and Sabato was forced to make the three count, crowning Nick Gage the new Ultraviolent Underground champion. Post-match, Lobo told the Necro Butcher that he had a surprise waiting for him... an old friend... and that if he makes it past this old friend, then MAYBE he can have a shot at Nick Gage.

Who is Lobo bringing to put the Necro Butcher "in his place"? The words "old friend" summon up many names in the minds of the CZW faithful... but the true question is, is this "old friend" capable of defeating the Necro Butcher? To be honest, few wrestlers are better when it comes to brawling, hardcore, and just sheer tolerance of pain... so who is going to match up with the Necro Butcher?

Whoever it is, I don't envy the task.
But then again, I don't doubt Lobo's decision-making skills, either.

On February 11th, CZW will return to the New Alhambra Sports and Entertainment Center...
and being the seventh anniversary of Combat Zone Wrestling, there is sure to be a little extra something in the air. Every grudge will be taken one step further... every time someone steps in the ring they'd better put up or shut up... especially if they want to be around for the next seven years.
