PCW Tullamarine Show
18th of March, 2006
Held in the Tullamarine War Memorial Hall in Tullamarine, Victoria (Aus)
Commentators: Christopher Bayliss & Baron Valiant
Attendance: 200 +
Opening Thoughts: What’s up everyone and welcome to another review written by Scott Tinsley for PCW Australia. PCW returned to the War Memorial Hall in Tullamarine for another heavily anticipated show, which would hopefully advance many of the storylines that were created with the conclusion of the 5 star super-show, Midget-Mania. When PCW debuted in Tullamarine on the 25/2, the show had it’s up’s and down’s, where my expectation’s were higher than what the matches presented, and drew an overall personal rating of 7. The line-up was announced online earlier in the week, and it appeared that PCW had another jam-packed show in store for the Tullamarine fans. Would this month’s show top the rating of last month’s? Read on to find out:
The show begins with the recently appointed PCW Commissioner, “The Living Legend of Australian Wrestling” Mario Milano making his way out to the ring and welcoming everyone to the show. Milano states that PCW is the best wrestling company in Australia, due to the work rate of the guy’s in the back. Milano thanks everyone a 2nd time for coming, before leaving the ring and making his way through a sea of autograph’s to the backstage area.
Match #1: PCW World Tag Team Championship Match
Jeric Craven & Stuart Valentino ( c ) defeat George The Hitman & Tank at 15:52
Thoughts: Returning to where they debuted as a newly formed Tag Team Championship unit, the more I see Craven and Valentino as a team, the more they suit each other. I don’t think anyone actually expected the team of George The Hitman and Tank to win the belts on this night, however the longer the match went on, the possibility of it happening advanced. The match itself was very strange in the fact, that it didn’t follow the structured tag team format that just about every tag team match goes through, and so at times, the match appeared dis-jointed and crowded. Eg, normally a tag team match begins with the face’s delivering a flurry of offense, before taking the beating and making the under-dog comeback. In this match, Stuart Valentino began and was dominated until he made the hot tag at 8:17. It made sense for the Full Blooded Midgets to make an appearance, especially since they had promised at “Midget-Mania” to defeat Craven and Valentino for the belts. Having Mr Big and Joey Russel Jnr, have an input in the outcome of the match made sense, and was a creative way in advancing the storyline.
The PCW World Heavyweight Champion, The Pitbull made his way out to the ring to a mixed reaction. Pitbull grabs the mic and states that everyone in the building should be showing him some respect! He states that the Touch Of Class tried to take the World Title from him, and if they attempted to again, they would be on a one way ticket to the emergency ward! Pitbull announces that when PCW returns for “Revenge” in Rowville, he is facing Trikki D, but tonight, to prove that he is the greatest PCW Heavyweight Champ of all time, he is issuing an open challenge. The Iron Horse answers the challenge, stating that he accepts the challenge, but Daniel Swagger’s music interrupts The Iron Horse from continuing any further. The Iron Horse continues, promising that by the end of the night, he would be wearing the World Championship. Swagger grabs the mic and begins to mock the Pitbull, before telling the Iron Horse that he is the rightful #1 Contender to the PCW World Heavyweight Championship, regardless of who wins tonight.
Thoughts: This was a decent promo I felt, as it gave a brief history lesson of what occurred at “Midget-Mania”, announced the future feud advancements, and set the stage for the main event tonight. I have really been enjoying Pitbull’s mic spot’s as of late. While on the mic, he is an intense mixture of “Big Poppa Pump” Scott Steiner and Jeff Jarrett, and wrestles much like a Ken Shamrock. I wasn’t sure of what to make with the Iron Horse challenging for the Championship again, but at least another sub feud has been created.
Match #2: Trikki D defeats Carnage at 11:18
Thoughts: This wasn’t the first time I had seen these two go at it, but it certainly was the better contest. In what I regard as still a fairly good match, it was wrestled at a much lower expectation than I expected. Rather than going at it in a cruiserweight fashion, it was fought in a deliberately paced contest. Fortunately the match didn’t suffer from it, because the Tullamarine crowd was eating up the action anyway. In a pretty cool visual, Trikki ate a wild clothesline about 3 minutes into the match that looked like he had been decapitated. When on target, Carnage’s kicks look lethal from the fan’s point of view and the height he got on the failed Top Rope Frog Splash was massive and looked devastatingly painful! Perhaps a heel turn is in store for Carnage, losing the opening Triple Threat Match on last week’s Slam! show, and then losing to Trikki D tonight?
Twizted Steel, the fourth member of a Touch Of Class, is set to make his in-ring debut tonight and is about to make his way into the ring, when The Pitbull comes out of nowhere and mutilates Twizted Steel! Pitbull repeatedly smashed Steel’s head against the ring steps and tosses him in the ring where he puts the boots to him until Daniel Swagger and Trikki D charge into the ring, and force the Pitbull to flee through the crowd.
Thoughts: Twizted Steel sold the attack from The Pitbull like death! Both men were so good in their respective roles. Pitbull was insane in the attack, and Twizted Steel sold everything from the surprise factor to the attack itself perfectly. Overall, a great segment that made the rivalry between Swagger and Pitbull that much more personal. Great booking.
Match #3: The Full Blooded Midgets (Mr Big & Joey Russel Jnr) defeat The Mexicans (El Diablo & Tijuana Kid) at 7:04
Thoughts: The sub feud that the Full Blooded Midgets have with The Mexicans has been very enjoyable. This was a re-match from their encounter at “Midget-Mania”, where The Full Blooded Midgets squashed The Mexicans in a 3-minute match. Then last week on the Slam! show, Joey Russel defeated Escreamer in a one-on-one contest, while El Diablo was killed by both Ricky Diamond and Carnage in a Triple Threat Match. The great thing about the Mexicans is that they are enjoyable to watch even though you know that they don’t have a hope of winning. They are an entertaining duo that can be squashed; yet still get a decent amount of believable offense in. I don’t think this mini-feud will go anywhere, but while the FBM wait for a re-match against Craven and Valentino, it gives them a story to work with.
Match #4: Candyman defeats Ricky Diamond at 13:04.
Thoughts: From about 5 minutes into this match, I was personally waiting for the finish. Even though the Candyman’s pop rivalled that of The Touch Of Class, the crowd was dead silent for the majority of the bout, and that didn’t help the match at all. Diamond’s work over Candyman’s leg was fairly good, and I felt that Candyman was able to sell the leg very well the entire bout. Often during the heat of the bout, the selling of an injury becomes a 2nd thought, but to Candyman’s credit, the injured leg was sustained the entire bout. Overall, a match that would have been better off being a bit shorter, and giving the fans what they want in the sense that Candyman picks up the quick victory.
{20 Minute Intermission}
Match #5: PCW Cruiserweight Championship Match
Slikk Steev ( c ) defeats PCW Slam! Champion, Psychotic at 9:09
Thoughts: I was interested in as to how Slikk Steev would look and wrestle as the new PCW Cruiserweight Champion, as he had a lot of pressure to carry with the strap coming off Trikki D. I never actually caught on as to whether or not this was for the Cruiserweight Championship or not, but either way Steev managed to roll up Psychotic, with the assistance of the ring ropes to score the victory. I was personally looking forward to seeing this bout, and I felt I got what I wanted out of the match, entertainment wise. It has been a long time since I saw a really spotty cruiserweight match, and I’m not sure wether I’m enjoying the slower paced style more or not. Both men took some bumps, and both dished out some great looking moves. I would like to see Slikk remain involve in the Pitbull-Touch Of Class feud, as he evens out the numbers to a degree. Seeing Pitbull take on the entire TOC faction is a little much to take in, but when Steev is brought into the mix, we reach a medium. Psychotic is one to watch for all PCW fans, and I’m waiting for that one win, which will boost him into the main roster. However, especially at the moment, Slikk needs to defend the belt against the likes of Twizted Steel, Trikki D and possibly Chucky E Chaos, which will raise his stock with theirs.
Christopher Bayliss made his way into the ring and introduced the injured Chucky E. Chaos to the ring for an interview. Chucky, who came out on crutches from the match and later attack two weeks ago by Chris Knight, made his way into the ring, and didn’t get a chance to say anything before Knight’s music hit. Valiant joined Knight in the ring, and Knight kicked away one of Chucky’s crutches, and gave him a wicked clothesline. Chucky managed to crawl into a corner and fend off Valiant and Knight with his 2nd crutch, until Daniel Swagger’s music hit the speakers and he charged down the ramp for what appeared to be somewhat of an impromptu match.
Thoughts: I liked the way that this match was set up, going back to Chucky E. Chaos’ injury two weeks ago at “Midget-Mania”, and then setting up a match tonight. If PCW handles the way Knight is put over as a monster, he has the potential to be their version of Samoa Joe. As the two started brawling in the ring, I figured there was only two ways this match could advance anything in anyway. If Swagger won, he would have to fend off a likely attempted attack from Pitbull, and kill off Knight’s monster streak. Or, Knight would win, but would only do so with the assistance of Baron Valiant and the possibility of a Pitbull attack. Personally I hoped it was the latter option.
Match #6: Chris Knight w/ Baron Valiant defeats Daniel Swagger at 16:23
Thoughts: First of all, let me just state that I am so happy that Baron Valiant’s “Weapon Of Mass Destruction” in Chris Knight defeated Swagger tonight, because he needed a victory over a big name within the company, and they don’t get much bigger at the moment than Swagger. I still strongly feel at the moment that Knight should dominate some of the smaller Slam! wrestlers, in matches that go less than 5 minutes. Knight should be squashing opponents for a while on the big shows, like Samoa Joe squashes the rest of the TNA X-Division on Impact. Swagger’s loss tonight opens up the possibility of a later re-match, and possibly a tag team partner for the Pitbull and Slikk Steev in a Superstar 6 Man Tag? The length of the bout helped both men, in the fact that Swagger’s credibility wasn’t hurt; due to the fact that it took Knight, Baron Valiant and The Pitbull to collectively defeat Swagger, and Knight’s stock raised dramatically with the huge win. Well-booked match.
Match #7: PCW World Heavyweight Championship Match
The Pitbull ( c ) defeats The Iron Horse at 15:01.
Thoughts: In all honesty, this was about as good as I thought it would be. Iron Horse is a slim 7ft tall monster, and The Pitbull is an intense animal, the likes of Ken Shamrock in his prime. There were a few moments in the match where things looked sloppy, but overall it was a decent main event. I think one of the main problems with the bout, was the lack of crowd participation. The previous bout included the “Golden Boy”, which every girl under the age of 18 screams for like crazy, whereas the Iron Horse didn’t have that connection with the fans, and therefore his face status in the match became somewhat dead. I don’t think anyone in the building expected the Iron Horse to win the World Championship, and quite frankly, I think he would be better suited a bit lower in the card. Pitbull’s first Spear was very impressive; it looked like he had just ran through a wall!
Overall: What a long show! I think it actually ended at about 11pm, from an 8:15 start. This show felt like it flowed better and seemed well booked, taking the match results and storylines into account. Tonight’s card wasn’t as good as the debut Tullamarine show, but none of the matches fell below my expectation like the two featured ones from last time. My only real complaints about this show are just little things such as; the length of the Candyman/Ricky Diamond match (and Ricky Diamond’s attire), and the match placement of the Swagger/Knight match and the Pitbull/Iron Horse battle. I am really looking forward to where the Pitbull/Touch Of Class feud is heading, and how both Slikk Steev and Chris Knight may or may not be included in the future feud. As I have stated about 3 times recently, Knight needs squash matches on the bigger shows, Slikk needs to defend the Cruiserweight Championship against higher regarded challengers and the Touch Of Class, I am eagerly awaiting the debut of Twizted Steel and that one win that Psychotic needs.
