NWS Promoter, Joe Panzarino, contacted the DOI early Friday morning to let us know that independent superstar, Matt Striker aka Matt Martel, will NOT be at this years J-Cup.
Matt Striker has been advertised to appear at the event for several weeks now, and was a favorite to win the tournament.
Joe Panzarino told the DOI that, "Matt Striker opted not to fulfill his word and committment. The NWS will be losing Matt Striker's phone number."
Matt Striker will be wrestling for CSWF and NYWC on April 30th, which is the same date as the J-Cup.
Joe Panzarino told the DOI that Striker was originally booked for his show before the other promotions had their dates set. Once Striker found out about NYWC/CSWF, Panzarino said that Striker still committed to his show. Striker then called Panzarino on Thursday to let Joe know that he would not be able to wrestle in the J-Cup.
Joe Panzarino also told the DOI that "I hope Striker enjoys his tremendous payday at CSWF. It is unfortunate that some indy wrestlers don't have respect or honor anymore. Striker is a great wrestler but right now isn't trustworthy. I wish Matt well, as he is a great talent, but the NWS has no interest in using him in any show in the future."
Drew Blood, from Pro Wrestling Unplugged, will be replacing Matt Striker in the tournament.
To me, it seems that Striker has one of the better problems in wrestling- everyone wants him, but he just can't be at three places at one time. It is unfortunate that alot of these indy promotions all schedule shows head-to-head with each other, because not only does it force the wrestlers to pick and choose, these groups wind up splitting the market. NYWC, CSWF and NWS will all be holding important shows as NYWC will have the conclusion of 32-Man Tournament, CSWF has an NWA World Title Defense and NWS has one of the premier NJ tournaments, all on the same date. These three groups are all losing potential dollars by running against each other. It is a shame that promotions don't make more of an active effort in not running head-to-head. They are only hurting themselves by not doing so.
Check out the DOI Main Page for all the latest NWS J-Cup information, as the show looks to be coming along nicely with two independent heavyweight title defenses, Simon Diamond/Danny Doring vs Jim Neidhart/Power Child, and of course, the 6th Annual J-Cup Tournament.
