MERCEDES MARTINEZ DEFEATS SUMIE SAKAI AT EVOLVE 2!

Mercedes successfully defended her Women's Superstars Uncensored (WSU) World Championship last night against international superstar Sumie Sakai. Sakai proved to be a handful for the champion, more so than her challenger Niya at EVOLVE 1. In fact, it appeared that Sakai may have injured the champion in the early moments of the match when she went to work on Martinez's shoulder. After an arm drag rolled into an arm bar, Martinez let out a scream that reverberated around the entire venue. Sakai, sensing an injury, rolled the champion up for a quick pinning combination.



Martinez would kick out to continue the match, but Sakai knew the champion was vulnerable, and after the brutal match that Martinez endured the previous week against Rain, Sakai was ready to capitalize. She centered her attention on the right shoulder of the WSU Champion, and quickly put Martinez at a disadvantage.





Two missile drop kicks later and it looked like there might be a new WSU Worlds Champion by the end of the night. But Martinez is a resilient champion, and she took everything Sukai had to offer, and just when things looked their worse, Martinez pulled herself off the mat and went to work.



She caught Sakai going to the well one more time, and the champion pounced, throwing the challenger off the ropes, to land hard onto her face. It was quite a drop, and it would provide Martinez with enough time to mount the offense she needed to put herself in the driver's seat.



But Martinez overestimated the damage done to Sakai, and went for an early exit with the Fisherman's Buster. Sakai countered by driving her knee into the champion's skull, and seized on the moment to go back to work on the champion's injured shoulder.





Martinez would soldier through the pain however, and the crafty warrior was able to gain control of the contest by lifting Sakai up while she was in the armbar, and drive the challenger into the mat. This would open up an opportunity to once again go for her patented finisher, this time connecting.





With the victory, Martinez now stands at 2-0 in the EVOLVE promotion. Afterward, while being interviewed in the ring by Lenny Leonard, Martinez once again stated that women's wrestling was evolving as well, and that May 1st, she'd like to be challenged by the best the world has to offer.



Another terrific title defense by the woman that many consider to be the best female competitor in professional wrestling today.
