Wayne: The Convience Store Guy
What’s up DOI fans and welcome to another McInterview, for the DOI website. This time I interviewed up and comer Wayne The Convenience Store Guy. Wayne is one of the more underrated wrestlers today, and I think it has to do with his tag team partner more then him. Wayne has been turning out great matches with Johnny Ova in ICW to PWA where he recently defeated Spider, Brian XL and J Busta for the PWA Lightening Title. Wayne is a regular on NYWC and USA Pro shows, and is over with the fans every time he goes out there. I think Wayne has great potential to make a name for himself on the indies and I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did conducting it.
Sean “The MiC” McCaffrey: How did you get your start in wrestling? Was your training anything like Tough Enough?
Wayne “The Convenience” Store Guy: During high school I started watching ECW (Extreme Championship Wrestling) and saw wrestlers that were the same size as me, winning straps and stealing shows. Wrestlers like Mikey, Spike, Guido, Mysterio, and Taz. This gave me the great idea that I didn't have to be over six foot tall to be a pro wrestler. I started going to local Indy shows and met a wrestler named Paul Lauria who had a short stint in ECW. Lauria opened a school with two other wrestlers Mike Norman and Mikey Whipwreck. I joined and trained there and got to wrestle on their school shows that started to get a cult following. This was great for two years until greed took over and no more school or promotion. Then I trained with Mikey and the SAT, Red, Quiet Storm, Chris Devine, and sometimes Brian XL. Training was nowhere like Tough Enough we had to do intense cardio, and if we stopped we would get tapped out, suplexed, or end up doing steps carrying a chair.
The MiC: Who were some of your favorite wrestlers growing up?
Wayne : Growing up some of my favorite wrestlers were anybody in the Heenan Family, Savage as a heel, later on Cactus Jack, Abdullah the Butcher and Terry Funk.
The MiC: You've been able to train with guys like Mikey Whipwreck. How is it training with such high profile names in the business?
Wayne : Having been able to train with Mikey and others you can learn different styles and you can learn for everyone such as Lucha form the SAT, psychology form Guillotine LeGrande, mat wrestling from Quiet Storm, and all three from Mikey.
The MiC: You currently own the PWA Lightening (cruiser) belt. How does it feel to be a champion, and know that a promoter has faith in you to hold a belt?
Wayne : Winning the PWA lightening belt was awesome, it is a great feeling to know the promoter has faith in you, but the best thing about that match was when I got to the back Red and the SAT came up to me and said "Yo Wayne mang you've got good mang". The fans also made it a great match too.
The MiC: Wayne and Trekkie were a successful tag team, even winning USA Pro Tag Team gold. Do you enjoy singles or tag matches? Or you don't mind either way?
Wayne: Wayne and Trekkie were good while it lasted but right when we were picking up steam Trekkie got sick and was in the Hospital. He also lost someone that meant a lot to him right after being sick, and the team of Wayne and Trekkie never got back on the right track. I really like doing both singles and tag team matches.
The MiC: What do you have to feel about the critics, myself included as being a critic, who say that you are better off breaking away from Trekkie, and making a serious singles run?
Wayne: Hey it's America and people can say what they want. I like reading what critics have to say about me; because they let me know what I am doing wrong and I use that to get better. I also like the support from the critics, and always keep an ear to what they are saying. I am very happy with my last few singles matches, but I still have a lot more to improve.
The MiC: What do you think has been your best match of your career?
Wayne: My favorite match of my career up to now has to be the Psycho Circus it happened in HWA (Hardcore Wrestling Alliance) which is now no longer the match was Mikey, Wayne, Adam Flash, Larry Mckenny and Red vs. S.A.T., Chris Devine, Quiet Storm and Paul Lauria.
The MiC: What are your favorite feds to work for? Least favorite?
Wayne: I have never worked in a fed I have disliked. USA pro, ICW, QWA, LICW, NYWC, and PWA are all great and I hope to add more feds to that list.(hint hint)
The MiC: Where did you get the Convenience Store Guy Gimmick from?
Wayne: The Convenience Store Guy gimmick came from the ring announcer Steve De Angelis from USA Pro it was my first match in USA Pro, and I had a gas attendant's shirt, and on the side pocket the name Wayne. I have always been Wayne but Steve added the Convenience Store Guy part.
The MiC: What are your career goals?
Wayne: Some career goals are to step it up and work hard and hopefully get a shot at ROH, PWF, WXW, JAPW, SSCW, 3PW and JCW. One step at a time, and in no particular order, and if I forgot a fed that one too.
