Tod Gordon

Former ECW booker, and current 3PW booker, Tod Gordon

What’s up everyone, and welcome to another McInterview. Today’s guest is none other than former ECW booker and current 3PW booker, Tod Gordon. I got to meet up with Tod at a recent 3PW show and was able to get this interview. I’d like to thank Tod for sitting down with me and doing this interview. In this interview Tod talks about ECW, his friends, 3PW, and who he thinks the next indy star will be. I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did.

Sean “The MiC” McCaffrey: Being in the business for so long, what would you tell anyone looking to get into the business?

Tod Gordon: Go to a wrestling school. There are lots of them all over the country, and especially on the east coast.

The MiC: How did you get into the wrestling business?

Tod Gordon: I started in TWA as a ring announcer, ran by Joel Goodheart. TWA was ECW's predecessor. I had fun over there. I eventually branched out to ECW, and one thing led to another, and now I’m in 3PW.

The MiC: What is your relationship with Paul Heymen today?

Tod Gordon: The same as it was when ECW was running, except I talk to him two times a week instead of seven times a week. We’re good friends.

The MiC: Back during the Monday Night Wars, a lot of ECW superstars started jumping ship to WCW. There was a big rumor all over the internet at that time, and even believed today by some, that you were the one tipping off Eric Bischoff, hence you becoming called a “mole.” What was the whole deal with those rumors and was it a work?

Tod Gordon: It was all a work. In reality, I was just getting married, and needed a break from wrestling. We worked everyone. We thought this would be a great gimmick for me being an ultra heel, sort of like Fonzie. (Bill Alfonso) Everyone that it was a shoot, when it was a work the whole time. I just had to leave wrestling for a while, and this was a great way to do it.

The MiC: What do you think has been the best match you’ve ever seen?

Tod Gordon: Wow. (pauses to think, as he’s seen a lot) I’d probably have to say The Pitbulls vs Raven/Steven Richards, with myself and Fonzie as the special guest referees. It just had a great build and was a great story line and the pay off match was electric. The crowd loved it and I liked being a part of it. There were so many false spots and the finish was great. The live crowd ate it up, and that was my favorite match.

The MiC: What are your best memories in the wrestling business?

Tod Gordon: Just being here since 1992. Another great memory was hearing that at a WWE show in Hawaii, the crowd started chanting E!C!W! That means a lot that people still remember something from 2 years ago, and how far ECW spread. Just hearing it today is great.

The MiC: What are your worst memories in the wrestling business/

Tod Gordon: (answers immediately) Death in wrestling. It’s horrible.

The MiC: How did you get into 3PW?

Tod Gordon: The Blue Meanie called me and explained what 3PW is and what they are trying to do. They wanted me for a one shot deal at an event. They needed a boss figure, with Jasmin, because they were used to running smaller shows, with the talent not as big as it is here in 3PW. The main event match was Sandman/Sabu/New Jack and Meanie needed someone who could book, run, and organize a show. I came down and hit it off with them. The show and the match came out great. Jasmin was impressed and asked me to come back. I was happy to do it, and I’m having fun in 3PW. I love Jasmin and love working with her. It’s great here and I have a great relationship with her and Meanie.

The MiC: Vince McMahon is on the phone, to offer you a WWE contract. Do you take it?

Tod Gordon: (Immediately) No.

The MiC: How come?

Tod Gordon: I don’t want to travel anymore. I enjoy what I’m doing now.

The MiC: Who do you think the next indy star will be?

Tod Gordon: Well if I was running the WWE, the first person I would take would be Matt Striker. (NY/NJ/3PW Striker) He’s a great wrestler and solid all around. The person I can see the WWE taking is AJ Styles. He has the right look and is a great wrestler.

The MiC: What do you think about WWF stealing ECW’s feel around 1997, and dubbing it “Attitude”?

Tod Gordon: You can steal all you want, but if you can’t execute it means nothing. They didn’t know how to do it, and if you can’t do it right, then the product suffers. ECW was real. WWF’s product wasn’t believable, while ECW’s product felt and was real.

Quick Word Association:

Vince McMahon: Wish I had his money. If I had his money when running ECW, one could imagine what wrestling would be like.
Vince Russo: Don’t know him.
Jasmin St. Claire- Love her. Beautiful and brilliant.
Paul Heymen: Eccentric genius.
Taz: Good soldier.

Tod Gordon: Also I would just like to add that I love my crew, and I really am glad for their success. The Public Enemy, Scorpio, Fonzie, Sabu, and Gary Wolfe have always been my good friends and have been important to me.

The MiC: What do you want to say to anyone reading this?

Tod Gordon: Thanks for supporting the product and watching 3PW.

The MiC: Thanks for doing this interview with me.

Tod Gordon: Anytime thanks for having me.
