What
up loyal DOI-maniacs? Today I interviewed the Original Playa from Himilaya,
Sonjay Dutt. Sonjay is a CZW regular and turning heads from Philly to Florida
to Delaware. Sonjay recently participated in Best of the Best 3 and The
Jeff Peterson Memorial Cup. I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I
did.
Sean “The MiC” McCaffrey: How did you get your start in wrestling? How did
you know you wanted to get into it?
Sonjay Dutt: Well, after months of saving money, I went and decided to get
trained and do this professionaly. As far back as I can remember, I've wanted
to do this for a living, and as soon as I was 18, I started saving up so
I could do it. There was never a doubt in my mind as to what I was going
to do in life.
The MiC: Who were your favorite wrestlers growing up?
Dutt: I loved Ric Flair, Cactus Jack, I watched all kinds of Japanese stuff,
so I was a mark for Great Sasuke, Liger and all those guys.
The MiC: How was your training, was it anything like tough enough?
Dutt: It was training, no crazy stories like I was mauled and beaten until
I was bloody or anything like that, but it was hard stuff. Nothing like
Tough Enough, I didn't have a house to live in, a free SUV to drive around
in or any free trips to far off places.
The MiC: How did you think of the name of "The original playa, from the
Himalaya"?
Dutt: Easy, I love to rhyme.
The MiC: What has been your best match so far?
Dutt: I've been happy with so many, the 3 way ladder match at Night of Infamy,
my first match with Trent Acid back in December, versus Hype Gotti a few
months back in Iowa, ahh, the Best of the Best finals with B-Boy. Just last
weekend at the Jeff Peterson Cup in Florida, I was in a tag match with Steve
Maddison (from Riki Choshu's WJ) versus Jerrelle Clark and Rodrick Strong.
I was very pleased with that match, we got a standing ovation and everyone
had good stuff to say about it, I'm not sure if it was that good, but I
haven't seen it yet. And how can you beat all four of us doing the Sprinkler
together!
The MiC: What are some of your superstitions if any, before going into a
match?
Dutt: I always say a word to the big man upstairs. And dump buckets of Hot
Stuff on me, it makes me extra sexy!
The MiC: How is it working for CZW?
Dutt: Simply great, couldn't ask for anything better.
The MiC: What are your favorite feds to work for? Least favorite?
Dutt: I love working for CZW first and foremost, umm PCW is always fun,
and I had a blast down at IPW-Hardcore and hope to go back there. I don't
have a least favorite.
The MiC: What wrestlers do you like to work with? What wrestlers don't you
like to work with?
Dutt: I love working with anyone that is enthusiastic about having a good
match and putting on a good show for the crowd. I cant say I dont like working
anyone.
The MiC: How was it working the Jeff Peterson memorial show?
Dutt: It was tremendous, a great experience. It was great being part of
the show and paying tribute to Jeff, plus Ron Neimi is class act and he
really treated all of us great. I had two great matches, plus I was in Florida,
can't ask for more than that. It's like a sauna there, nothing like back
home. I'm sad I didn't see any dolphins, I like dolphins.
The MiC: There has been a rumor that Zandig pulled you out of a recent DCW
show, this past weekend, after flying from Tampa, FL to get there. Can you
clear the air, and let the fans know what really happened?
Dutt: Pretty much, while I was in Florida I had no clue as to the happenings
back home, and during that time, DCW went on to say things that weren't
too kind to Zandig and CZW. I, knowing nothing of this, show up in DE, as
I find out what had happened, it was an easy decision to stay away from
the show and leave. Zandig was there as he had a meeting with the owner
of the building regarding our shows there, good thing he was there as he
explained the whole situation to me. He showed up for his meeting, we hung
out, he did his meeting and then we left. Since that's not exciting enough,
people had to make up all kinds of garbage to make the situation interesting.
The MiC: How did it feel wrestling in Best of The Best 3, in CZW?
Dutt: It was tremendous, one of the best nights ever. I had 4 great matches
and made it to the finals to face B-Boy, and I am still hearing a lot of
great feedback from that match. I also went home with two trophies, so Best
of the Best 3 was a great night for me, except when I got home at 6am and
saw the sun coming up as I lay down to sleep.
