EC Negro winning the JCW Title

EC Negro has seen many ups and downs in his short 3 year career. At one point, EC Negro, with KC Blade, as the Dirty Rotten Scoundrelz, held four major Tag Team Championships at once. (USA PW/JAPW/JCW/PWA Tag Titles) As quickly as those belts came, the belts were quickly gone. After a succesful 2003, the DRS hit a rut in the beginning of 2004. This would be the first obstacle in the DRS's career. The DRS were able to overcome their obstacles and problems, and they made another strong run. The DRS picked up the WXW and JCW tag team titles during the summer. The DRS had alot of steam as they were receiving pushes in JAPW and USA PW. Then, EC Negro's partner, KC Blade, got hurt. Blade is going to be out for some time. In the time he's off, and was off, Negro started wrestling in singles matches. With a rough road ahead of him, Negro set off to accomplish milestones as a singles wrestler. It didn't start out good, as he lost, in a quest to defend the DRS's WXW Tag Team titles by himself, against the Untouchables. But that would be the only real loss Negro suffered since Blade's injury. Negro collected wins all over the indies since August, and it recently culminated at the end of September, as he defeated Slyck Wagner Brown, to become the new JCW Heavyweight Champion. Negro, with Blade still recuperating from a serious injury, is ready to make headlines.
In this interview Negro discusses his partner, his recent success, being compared to Dan Maff, championships and much more. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: EC Negro, it has been more than 2 years since you last did an interview with me. What has been going on and how are you doing?
EC Negro: Well alot has changed in the last two years with me. As far as my wrestling career goes, it has had its ups and downs, but right now things are looking very good in DRS land. As far as me personally, I feel like I have matured so much in many different ways. My maturity has helped me focus more on what's important to me in my life and that's pro wrestling, so all in all, I'm really good.
EC Negro: The status of KC Blade is not very good. He is suffering right now mentally, and especially physically. He has four compressed discs in his lower spine and a stinger in his neck. His progress isn't going so well, because his body isn't holding up as well as it should. We are expecting KC Blade to be out anywhere from 8 months now to a year and a half. I wish to God that he was back tomorrow with me, so we could continue doing what we do best and that's tag team wrestling. I have talked to alot of people and they don't seem to understand how serious this injury is. KC Blade is only 22 years old. For someone to be going through this at this age is very rough. I want to thank everyone for their support of me and my partner, as we are going through hard times.
EC Negro: Well this question definitely connects to the last one. I think it must be very hard for Blade at this time, because he's not doing what he loves. If it was up to him I'm sure he would be wrestling everyday. At the few shows we have attended together since his injury, he has done pretty well. I know at the first WXW show we attended, he didn't really want to be around becuase he felt he wasn't contributing and was in the way. Blade has alot of pride and respects this sport so much, that he will do what it takes when he is needed. After Blade realized how much the people and the boys in the back supported him, the transition has been alot easier. Blade right now is a big part of my success. We went from being one of the most hated teams in wrestling to being one of the most loved. For that, I thank you Blade for being a great friend and a great manager.
EC Negro: Well I have noticed how much positive reaction I have gotten doing singles matches these last two months. I can really say that this has prepared me and made me more confident in my abilities in the ring. Me and Blade have already discussed our plans when he gets back. I think for the first few months of his return we will both do singles and tag work. I think the singles work will help him get rid of the ring rust that he's going to have. I also think that it will help Blade become more of a complete worker. People use to criticize us for the way we use to work. Playing to the crowd, we were called a comedy act. I didn't like it when we were called that back then and I don't like it now. The DRS will have a complete new style when we return. I also teams like the Backseats and Briscoes. They are so good because all four of them can handle themselves in the ring as singles workers and well as tag team specialists. After a few months of mixing it up, if the tag team is healthy (which it isn't now) I would love to reutrn to fulltime tag team work.
EC Negro: Winning the JCW heavyweight title is definitely the biggest accomplishment in my singles career. Having history with Slyck Wagner and April Hunter in JAPW, I was very excited to see that he was my opponent on this night. I definitely had something to prove not only to myself, but to the critics out there, who doubted me and my partner. It was very satisfying to me, to get the win over Slyck because I showed that I could hang with one of the best workers on the indies today. It is truly an honor to be associated with names like Simon Diamond, Don Montoya and most importantly, my trainer, Homicide, because I want to show him that he did a great job training the DRS and that we are capable of being great wrestlers, like he always told us we could be.
EC Negro: I honestly don't think me and Blade have anything else to prove in JCW. I think right now me and him have to both focus on becoming legends in that company, so that when you think JCW, you think of the DRS, in the same way you think of Simon Dimond or Don Montoya. I really love JCW and have alot of respect for Ricky O. He has definitely given me and my partner great opportunites. He was very concerned when he heard of my partner's injury and told me if I ever needed anything I can rely on him. To Ricky, I say thanks and I will not let you or JCW down while I have the ball in my court.
EC Negro: Yes, I definitely agree. My ring style is completly different in singles and in tag work. When you do singles you can only rely on yourself. So you have alot more time to do things that you might not do as a tag wrestler. In tag wrestling, you have to split your time with your partner. When you are tired you can tag out. Since starting singles my stamina, strength and mind power have all increased tremendously. You have to be able to think two steps ahead of your opponent, because if you don't, you will lose. In tag, you can rely more on someone else. That's why me and Blade are such a great tag team because we trust one another and rely on one another at all times. Also when me and Blade are teaming it's very easy because we think the same and complete one another. Not too many teams are like that today.
EC Negro: I really love the AWA and Mike Morgan. He and Damien (Neeno Capone) deserve everything that's good in life for what they have done this past year alone. These guys both work 40 hour weeks and still put a tremendous amount of time into the AWA, their school and their workers. I call the AWA, "The Jersey DogHouse" because it reminds me of that in so many different ways. They are a family and they teach you to do things the right way. It's one of the best lockerrooms out there, because everyone that works there is very hungry and wants to succeed. I hope that guys like me, Azrieal and Jay Lethal have contributed to the AWA, since we started working there. The AWA is the only place that can say they are running 2-4 times a month. 6 times this month alone. My message to all- is check out the AWA because it has the stars of tomorrow and today. Just like The Doghouse did a few years back.
EC Negro: Plain and simple, I think Mr. Starz is an idiot. How are you, in your right mind, going to tell workers where, when, and how they can work? He is not paying anyone to work for the UWA. People are busting their humps and trying to get their names out there. Working for free for you (Starz), but you are telling them, "Hey don't better your career. Hey don't try to make a name for yourself. As long as you work here you can't work anywhere else." I think that's pretty stupid. I just don't like how wrestling is run right now. Instead of competing against one another you should be all working together to better pro wrestling. At the end of the day, what matters is that pro wrestling is kept alive.
The DRS (Blade left, Negro right) pose with a homeless Yankee fan)
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: You won a triple threat match in USA PW as a singles wrestler on 9/17. Being a former USA PW Tag Team Champion, what is it like working for USA PW and what are your thoughts on Frank Goodman?
EC Negro: My only complaint is every workers complaint at USA Pro. The shows are too long. Besides that, I really enjoy working for Frank Goodman. He's a really cool guy and tries to put on supershows every show. Where else can you go to see the likes of Dlo Brown, Al Snow working guys like Low Ki and Homicide? He tries to put on Dream matches all the time which I really like. It's also a really fun, laid back atmosphere. If I had a fans point of view, I would call USA PRO the best fed, because you get the most matches for your monies worth.
EC Negro: Well I really think it was the breakout match for me as far as singles wrestling goes. It was the first time that I was given an opportunity to work a top notch worker like Dan Maff, one on one. I just watched the match for the first time the day after the JAPW anniversary show and I really loved the match. I think Dan has made a great transition from being in the best tag team in indy history to being one of the top ten singles workers on the indies. He has great charisma and can work his ass off. I'm really looking forward to the rematch a lot of people are talking about. Its unfortunate that he's experiencing shoulder problems right now, because this Friday the rematch was supposed to happen. Unfortunately, he cant make it. I hope then my opportunity comes, I can prove to Dan Maff and everyone who is interested in the match that I can be a complete singles worker and compete with the best.
EC Negro: Plain and simple JAPW holds a special place in my heart because they were the first major indy to give the DRS an opportunity. After we worked for JAP, that's when our careers took off. Every knows that right now the two top promotions on the east coast are ROH and JAPW. You ever notice that when a worker starts to work for either promotion and does well his or her career takes off? I have mad love for Ray and Frank. They have both been supportive of me and The DRS. They gave me a dark match last month against Pinkie Sanchez that i thought went well. I hope in the future that JAPW can continue to use E.C. Negro, until K.C. Blade returns, so then we can accomplish what we set out to do, before my partners injury and that's to win the JAPW tag team titles.
EC Negro: Well I think it all got started when we came into the wrestling business. I said this in my last interview with you, people do not know how to differentiate gimmick with the real life persona. Plain and simple, the people who have really gotten to know me know what I'm all about. In this business you really cant be concerned with what other people think about you. THAT RIGHT THERE IS DOGHOUSE 101. One of the first things you are taught, is that in this business people are shady. As the years gone by, I know who to trust and who not to trust. Who to consider friend, associate and worker.
EC Negro: I think that gimmick is so stupid. Whosever came up with that idea and whoever does that gimmick is truly an idiot. (laughing)
EC Negro: Big things were about to happen for me and my partner in SSCW. Regardless of what people may think of Carmine, I truly think he's a great guy who has great intentions in this business. He's just misinterpreted because he doesn't attend his shows. That doesn't mean that he's not a good promoter. When Blade got injured Carmine showed me a lot of class because he told me no matter what, that he would still book me and Blade for all his dates. He shows loyalty to his workers which is hard to find in this business. Simon is a great man, who has a great mind for the business. Since he took over as booker for SSCW, he has made something out of nothing. A few months ago SSCW was mocked, now its getting and earning respect. I can't wait to return to SSCW and I hope in the next few months that I can be apart of there product.
EC Negro: WXW and Pops have made me such a better worker then I was even six months ago. What WXW does is prepare you for the future. They are one of the only feds that use continual storylines, do promos and work consistently. I have so much fun doing the WXW shows. It's a great experience everytime I go there. If Boogalou only knew what was going to happen to him at on Oct 29th. I have a destiny and that's to become the WXW Television champion. Him and Rob Dimension were the two only men who disrespected me and my partner when we were in need of support. Boogalou thinks he's funny slapping me in the face, but on Oct 29th I'm going to slap him harder then ever before when I win what's most important to him and that's the WXW TV Title.
EC Negro: I think its a great compliment to be called all those names because Trent Acid and Dan Maff are great workers, but let it be clear that I don't want to be Dan Maff 2004 or Trent Negro or EC Maff, I want to be E.C. Negro 2004. I don't want to be considered another man. I just want to be E.C. Negro.
EC Negro: Of course, I think KC Blade is one of the most slept on workers in wrestling. I could definitely see him doing as well as I am and I would also support him just as much as he has supported me these last few months.
EC Negro: Da Hit Squad- the greatest indy team of all time. Would love to see them team again.
Backseat Boyz-another great tag team. Are doing something great for wrestling with their new fed. Would love to work for them sometime soon.
Briscoe Brothers-currently one of the best tag teams out there. Would love to work them sometime soon.
SAT-good business men and have accomplished so much in there careers. Would love to work them again
Out Cast Killahs-one of the future great tag teams in wrestling. Are really good guys who I consider friends.
Solution-deserve the great year they are experiencing. Wish them all the best. If they work hard they can be the best when it's all said and done.
Christopher Street Connection-great guys who always keep it real with me and my partner. Wish them nothing but the best. Thanks for everything Scotty and Ed.
Los Lunatics (Guapo/Low Ryda)-could be a great tag team if they teamed up everywhere.
Untouchables-good up and coming tag team, if they stick with it they could have a nice future.
All Money Is Legal-deserve all they have achieved, two of the only guys who have done it all by themselves. Two of the coolest cats from the BX.
Bison/Monsta Mack-if Bison followed Monsta Mack, and they trained hard together, then I feel they could be the next Hit Squad. They are big, they hit hard and their strong.
EC Negro: I think indy wrestling is suffering right now. All the smaller feds are competing with one another because they are all running on the same days against each other. What they should do, is spread their shows out, so that the real fans can enjoy all of wrestling and not have to choose what show to go to. If things were that way, wrestling would be a whole lot better.
EC Negro: I think ROH is the best indy out there and I would love to work for them. I was in attendance on Saturday for the Midnight Express reunion and I can tell you as a worker and as a fan that their was something special in the air that night. It's something I would love to be a part of. I think TNA made a great move by getting a slot on TV and also not running a PPV every week. I think it will help their product in the long run and I'd love to work there in the future as well.
EC Negro: No one really, I like everyone I have met. I have learned to seperate business from friendship, so there's noone I'd like to slap.
EC Negro: My days are different, usually just try to enjoy life as much as I can. I spend alot of time with family and loved ones. On the weekends, my life goes like this: Wake up, shower, get ready to meet up with my ride, wrestle, then party. Sleep, then do it again the next day. Typical life of a 24 year old.
EC Negro: Right now I think womans wrestling is really bad. There are truly only a few good female workers in the states. As soon as you leave the US, whether it's Mexico or Japan, womans wrestling is an artform out there. If people showed more interest in womans wrestling and the workers trained harder, I think it could be great for the business.
EC Negro: My career goals are to be the best worker I can be, whether in singles or tag. I want to be respected by my peeps for what I do. My main goal is to work in all the top indies and if I get a chance, I'd love to work overseas or in the WWE.
EC Negro: The future I hope hold alot of great things for EC Negro, KC Blade and the DRS. I will bust my ass as much as I can until my partner returns, and once he does, I will try to accomplish this. To be considered the best tag team in the world and great workers point blank. 2005 will be the year of The DRS in more ways then one.
EC Negro: I want to say to everyone thanks for reading the interview. Thank you for taking the time out to getting to know a lil bit more about me, my partner and our careers. I also want to thank everyone for their support these last few months, while my partner has been injured. To my real friends in the business, thank you for the advice(you know who you are).
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Thanks for your time and good luck in the future.
