As part of our on-going 2007 ECWA Super 8 coverage, the DOI will be interviewing all eight Super 8 competitors in this year's tournament. Our interview today is none other former WSX and ROH star, M-Dogg 20, who now goes by the name of Matt Cross.
With less than a month ago, find out who M-Dogg 20 aka Matt Cross is and his thoughts on the Super 8 tournament.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Hey Matt, it's a pleasure to have you on the DOI. My first question for you is what was going through your head when you were called by Jim Kettner to see if you were available for this year's Super 8 tournament?
M-Dogg 20 aka Matt Cross: It was an honor to say the least. There are so many Tournaments nowadays and the Super 8 is like the granddaddy to them all. After all these year it still has an aura associated with it. I'm thrilled to be involved in it this year and looking forward to making the most of this opportunity.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What does the Super 8 tournament mean to you? Being from the mid-west, does the tournament have as much significance there as it does in the north east?
M-Dogg 20 aka Matt Cross: I'm proud to add my name to the list of competitors that have made the tournament so special over the years. To be in the company of guys like A.j. Styles, Christopher Daniels, The Hardy's, Bryan Danielson, etc. is rewarding after years of hard work.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: You made your name in the mid-west but have become one of the most entertaining & favorite wrestlers of north east fans. What are the differences between Mid-West & East Coast fans? How come you think more mid-west and even west coast wrestlers get brought out to the east coast, while not too many west coast & mid-west promotions bring out east coast guys?
M-Dogg 20 aka Matt Cross: It's very hard to classify crowds since everyone is so different. You can work a show with anywhere from 10-10,000 people. Some small crowds are loud and crazy while some larger crowds are quiet and awkward. I hesitate to distinguish any differences in crowds. Other countries are a different story where you do get a difference and they have their own style.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What are your thoughts about wrestling in Ring of Honor? Who are some of your favorite opponents there?
M-Dogg 20 aka Matt Cross: It's exciting to be involved in ROH especially now with the national attention Pay Per View brings. There is so much young, hungry, talent there and everyone is working together to really raise the product. Being with ROH has given me some great opportunities and I look forward to continually climbing the ladder there. I enjoy working with, and learning from, most everyone on the roster. I think I work particularly well with Rocky Romero.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Would you like to wrestle anyone specifically at this year's Super 8? Is there anyone you think you don't match up well with?
M-Dogg 20 aka Matt Cross: Jerry Lynn and I have had some battles in the past. I pinned him in Erie, PA in 2003 to win a heavyweight belt for a fed there. He pinned me two months later in my hometown of Cleveland Ohio to get revenge. We were scheduled to face each other a third decisive time and it fell through. I think we've had some great matches in the past and have definitely improved vastly since then as well. I'd like to get to mix it up with him at some point in the tournament.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: With DVDs highlighting promotions all over the world and an abundance of promotions doing tournaments seemingly every week, do you think the Super 8 tournament means as much as it used to?
M-Dogg 20 aka Matt Cross: I do. That's why I'm so excited to be a part of it this year. I think the success of the Super 8 was the catalyst for all these other promotions exploiting the tournament idea.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: In your opinion, what matches of yours are your favorite? Are there any matches that you think made ECWA promoter Jim Kettner say, "I need him for this year's Super 8?"
M-Dogg 20 aka Matt Cross: I never like my matches, I'm my own worst critic. Sometimes I'll like a match right when it's finished but when I finally see it on DVD 9 times outta 10 I hate it. There are always ways to improve and always something you could've done better. Some of my favorite matches were against Ultimo Dragon in Italy over the summer of 06'. It was surreal to be wrestling in Italy where my Grandfather emigrated through Ellis Island in the 1920's. To be wrestling against a living legend just made the experience that much more memorable/exciting.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: You have wrestled on-off for JAPW the last few months. What's your current status there and what are your thoughts about their shows?
M-Dogg 20 aka Matt Cross: I'll be returning to JAPW this weekend actually at their big 10th anniversary show. I always have a lot of fun at JAPW and am honestly surprised they don't get more press than they do. They consistently draw some of the biggest crowds in indy wrestling and how many people can say they've been running strong for 10 years? I would love to be full-time with the company.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: You had some exciting & electric matches in the MTV WSX promotion. What were your thoughts on WSX and did you think it would be more successful than it was? What was it like teaming with Teddy Hart?
M-Dogg 20 aka Matt Cross: Everything you've ever heard about Teddy Hart is true.....and I love him......very entertaining guy. WSX was a lot of fun and it was a great experience. I learned a lot about what goes into making a television show and how wrestling for TV is very different. I hope these skills will come in handy in the future. I thought WSX did a great job of putting together a wrestling product that spoke to our generation. It was very fresh and edgy and perhaps with some promotion could have done something. Sure there were some bad things but I think overall the positives far outweighed the negatives.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Are you physically prepared to go three matches in the Super 8 tournament?
M-Dogg 20 aka Matt Cross: I'm always ready. I take professional wrestling very seriously. I hear people all the time talk about how they, "eat, sleep and breathe wrestling" well....I literally do. I watch every single thing that goes into my mouth, I've been watching what I eat since I was 11 years old. I've slept on floors, in cars, on trains, on planes, in airports, on boats literally all for wrestling.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What's a normal day in the life of Matt Cross?
M-Dogg 20 aka Matt Cross: It involves lots of eating and music. I probably listen to music 15 hours a day. I wake up to a CD alarm clock. Turn on my iPod with portable speakers and carry in around with me in the house. There's music on my computer, in my car, everywhere I go. My full 60 gig iPod is my best friend, haha. I eat 5-6 times a day, high protein low fat. I also go to the gym daily to prepare/train my body for professional wrestling.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What are your short-term and long-term career goals?
M-Dogg 20 aka Matt Cross: Short term is to see the world doing what I love. I love traveling and have been lucky enough to see Canada, Mexico, Ireland, England, Germany, Italy, France, Switzerland, Hungary, Austria, Czech Republic, and Japan because of this great sport. I hope to add more countries and the priceless life experiences that come with them in 2008. Long-term I'd like to work for a nationally televised professional wrestling company on a full-time basis.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Is there anything you want to say to anyone reading this?
M-Dogg 20 aka Matt Cross: Thanks for your time and be sure to check me out at:
