KEVIN MATTHEWS DOI INTERVIEW
Conducted: 9/25/2006

KM

Kevin Matthews is a wrestler that has appeared in several DOI interviews in the past. Starting his career at a young age, Kevin Matthews quickly made a name for himself with his "2-Cocky" attitude. After training at Gleason's Gym, Kevin branched out to NJ, where he was involved in the infamous TLC match with Danny Demanto, where Demanto's pants fell down to his ankles. From there, Kevin had a falling out with SSCW, and he returned to JCW, only to urinate on the SSCW TV title. However, later in 2004, Kevin Matthews woke up and desired more in his career. Gone was the silliness and perhaps puerile way of handling things. Kevin buckled down and took pro wrestling seriously. After being a self-admitted gym-rat, Kevin moved to the south, looking for opportunity. Opportunity knocked for Kevin Matthews in 2005, and at the age of 23, Kevin Matthews found himself with a WWE developmental deal.
The story of Kevin Matthews returned to the indy world when he was released from his WWE developmental deal this past week. Despite not getting a chance to really get a chance to shine in the sun, Kevin was dismissed from Deep South Wrestling. However, nearing the age of 24, the story of Kevin Matthews hasn't even started. It's barely begun. In this interview Kevin talks about his career, buckling down, his time under a WWE deal and much more. I hope you enjoyed this interview as much as I did.

Kevin Matthews vs Danny Demanto: Demanto Misses An Attempted Frogsplash on Kevin

Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: First off Kevin, welcome back to the DOI interviewee chair. Obviously, you've done many interviews with the DOI in the past, but as of the last year, you haven't done one since you were under WWE employ. By doing this interview, it's now a known fact that you are no longer under WWE contract. My first question for you is what everyone wants to know, why did you get released, considering you never really had a chance to show what you got in front of a big audience?

"2 Cocky" Kevin Matthews: Hey Sean, It has been a while. I see the site hasn't changed much for the better .. Ha j/k. Well I did wake up this morning to find out it is all over the net about my release (which is what I expected). First thing is First, not many people know this but the reason I haven't been seen wrestling on recent Deep South shows is because I recently underwent surgery on my right biceps. In July of this year I completely tore it while training and made the trip out to Birmingham, Alabama to meet with Dr. James Andrews who preformed the Surgical procedure. Standard healing time on an injury such as this is 3months and I was schedule for clearance this coming Wednesday but wound up getting "the call" before I got cleared. Can't make the company money while your hurt, you've seen it before its not uncommon.

Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What was Deep South Wrestling like? Is it a process you'd ever go through again?

"2 Cocky" Kevin Matthews: Jody Hamilton, Nick Patrick, Dave Taylor and a few others were all great and I'm going to miss a lot of them. But as far as would I ever do it again? I cant predict the future but as of right now? NO.

Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Before you got signed, it seemed you had a wake-up call, as you got away from the jokey/silly stuff in your career such as peeing on title belts, being associated with Danny Demanto etc, as you focused 100% of your time on your wrestling career. What made you take wrestling seriously and do you think lack of focus is a problem among indy wrestlers on the indy scene?

"2 Cocky" Kevin Matthews: One serious talk with Simon Diamond is what woke me up and opened my eyes. I just think its to easy to break into wrestling nowadays and it needs to go back to the way it used to be.

Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What are your thoughts on the indy scene today? Is it possible to make a career off of indy wrestling?

"2 Cocky" Kevin Matthews: Working for the right companies and taking it serious I most definitely think so.

Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Obviously your body-type is more suited for WWE. Is there any chance you'd give TNA a shot?

"2 Cocky" Kevin Matthews: 100%

Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What was your time in Deep South like? What would you compare it to? Who helped & trained you there?

"2 Cocky" Kevin Matthews: I was Injured for a few months, but before that I trained a lot with Dave Taylor who honestly does not get enough credit. Dave needs to be up on the road as a talent.

Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What advice would you give any indy wrestler about to sign a WWE developmental contract?

"2 Cocky" Kevin Matthews: Prepare to devote every minute of your life to succeeding. It's not as easy as people think it is. It's a long hard process.

Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: You have a very good relationship with several indy promoters, and you should have no time picking up work. Where will you be soon? Are there any companies you wouldn't want to work for?

"2 Cocky" Kevin Matthews: Yea, there are some I wouldn't work for but I am fortunate enough that I put 6yrs in on the independents and can get steady work with no problem. Right off the bat I'm on all upcoming SWF shows in Bluefield West, VA & all upcoming TNT Pro Wrestling shows in Virginia.

Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What are your thoughts on TNT Wrestling?

"2 Cocky" Kevin Matthews: Any Independent that draws 1000-2000 every show is definitely doing something right.

Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What are your thoughts on indy wrestlers who spend more time on MySpace than on their careers/physique/etc?

"2 Cocky" Kevin Matthews: Myspace is getting bigger then I ever thought it would, If you can use myspace to promote yourself then so be it. But the gym and training should always be first.

Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: You used to be the booker of ABC Pro Wrestling back in 2003. Any chance of a return? What are your thoughts on ABC Promoter Jimmy Hustler?

"2 Cocky" Kevin Matthews: Well I helped book 1 Show, I wouldn't call that a "booker". ABC Is around longer then people say it would be so hats off to Jimmy for keeping it alive. Would I return? Right Now? probably No.

Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: On your way out of the indy scene, you wrestled Danny Demanto several times in several stipulation matches. How many times has Danny asked you since you got released to wrestle him in various companies? Is wrestling Danny something you're looking forward to again?

"2 Cocky" Kevin Matthews: 343,563,763,378,876,046,258 times give or take 5. Danny has taken himself a little more serious and is doing good where he is. But I think for now I'm content with making a name for myself in other territories and markets.

Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What current indy wrestlers do you think have "it" but aren't getting the chance?

"2 Cocky" Kevin Matthews: John Walters & Greg Matthews. I also think Dirty Money & Phil Brown are up there. Jay Static also has a money making look too.

Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What current indy wrestlers do you think have just given up? Have you ever heard an indy wrestler give a dumb excuse for missing a booking?

"2 Cocky" Kevin Matthews: I think Devious in the northeast area, for a guy 6'7 to just be happy working in front of 10 ppl twice a yr is pretty much giving up and wasting his size.

Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What are your thoughts on WXW and do you forsee them in WWE's near future?

"2 Cocky" Kevin Matthews: I hope so, Afa has been nothing but good to me and has looked out for me so I really hope they get taken care of in the near future.

Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Now that you're a free man, what are you looking forward to accomplishing in the next phase of your career?

"2 Cocky" Kevin Matthews: Overseas!! I want to see the world and wrestle EVERYWHERE. Make my name as big as I possibly can.

Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What are the positives & negatives of the WWE developmental program?

"2 Cocky" Kevin Matthews: Positives are getting to TV, Negatives are getting Fired ha.. but seriously you do learn a lot from guys like Al Snow, Dave Taylor, Jody Hamilton & Rip Rogers so even if you never see the light of TV you cant help but to leave a better wrestler.

Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: In a look at the business type of question, what are your thoughts on Kurt Angle joining TNA? How do you think this will affect the business?

"2 Cocky" Kevin Matthews: I think If TNA wasn't competition for WWE before I think they are now.

Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What would you like to say to anyone reading this?

"2 Cocky" Kevin Matthews: There is life after death and with every negative there is a positive. I would like to thank everyone for the support and can't wait to see you at some upcoming shows. Check out my NEW official website @ www.KevinMatthewsOnline.com

Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Thanks for this interview and good luck in your future endeavors.
