JACK EVANS

Jack Evans has made quite a buzz here in the northeast, ever since debuting in Ring of Honor back in the fall of 2003. Being in this area for now a year, Jack Evans has made an impact in the northeast, and is considered the best high flyer around. Jack has worked for ROH, CZW, JAPW, USA PW, PWU, and SSCW, among other promotions in this area. Jack is currently part of Generation Next in ROH, which is ROH's crop of breakout stars in one stable. Jack recently won the 7th Annual, Best of the JAPW Light Heavyweights match on 9/18. Jack is often associated with Teddy Hart, on the indy scene, but don't be mistaken- he's not Canadian.
In this excellent interview, where Jack tells all, Jack talks about his career, a funny and bloody roadtrip, the Philadelphia wrestling scene, internet fans, having fun in wrestling and so much more. I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: How did you get into pro wrestling?
Jack Evans: I watched it as a kid and always wanted to do it, but it wasn't until that fateful day when Sean "The Lightning/Cannonball/1-2-3 Kid" beat Razor Ramone with the moonsault, that I thought I could do it for real.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Who were your favorite wrestlers growing up, and who do you like today?
Jack Evans: When I first started watching my faves were I.R.S. and The Mountie. Then I grew into Mr. Perfect, 1-2-3 Kid and Bret Hart. Eventually though the guys who would become my all-time heroes and idols would be Blitzkrieg, Hayabusa and Sasuke. Today, I am a big fan of watching Alex Shelley, Roderick, Red, B-Boy and Homicide.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Who has been the biggest influence on your career?
Jack Evans: Blitzkrieg for my wrestling style and Ted Hart for the direction it has gone, as he got me my first ROH booking and Japanese Booking.
Also as weird as it sounds a guy who influenced me in WRESTLING alot was a Skateboarder by the name of Rodney Mullen. He practiced so hard at his craft that it always motivated me to try hard at mine, although I have lost that fire I used to have, so I don't practice or train really at all anymore. It was Rodney Mullen who initially lit that fire under my ass to do the stuff I do, because I knew if I could control my body like he controls his skateboard I could go somewhere... Plus I think that if Skill was a quantifiable number, then Rodney Mullen would be #1 in the world. (What I mean is, I believe Rodney Mullen has more skills in Skateboarding then Tiger Woods does Golf, or Michael Vick does throwing a football. Rodney has ascended to a level of skill that probably only Jordan has ever seen) Also, I guess it's not an influence but anytime I hear about a highschool drop out making it big in something, it motivates me, because I never passed the 9th grade myself.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: There are alot of different reports about your heritage. Are you American or Canadian?
Jack Evans: American of course... Please do you think someone like me, would be from such an inferior place as Canada? They are a country without Culture or Cuisine(when was the last time you ate "Canadian" unless you enjoy poutine? ) So I have a secret plan to take a small group of freedom fighters over the border(with the Canadian military being what it is, I am guessing maybe 6 lightly armed teenagers from any random public school would do) and take over the entire country. We would then unite both North and South Dakota into one state and have Canada be our giant 50th state. Then all of those poor lost souls in Canada can finally be what they have always wanted to be - AMERICAN. (Yeah I am a little bit bitter from being kicked off of Team Canada, so WHAT? )
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: How did you hook up with Teddy Hart and the Hart family?
Jack Evans: Matrats started up and there was a kid who wrestled for them named Jake Evans who would later on become my story line brother because we had the same hair cut. Anyway, I was wrestling down in Tacoma, Washington and me and Jake had a match and he brought the tape back up to Calgary and showed Harry, TJ and Ted and they came and picked me in for Matrats. After the first 2 shows were taped, I went back down to Washington, only to be picked up a week later and brought to California with TJ and Ted. Then when they drove back up to Calgary, I just stayed with them and kind of bypassed Washington. Trust me, though it was for good reason because after having everything paid for, and taping a TV show then returning to your job as a burger flipper at Jack in the Box ,(although you should see the tricks I can do with a spatula and a meat pattie) where your bitter, fat, boss hates you, because in 45 years of her existence, she realizes that I am only 1 promotion away from being on her level, you tend to start to get a little bit twisted yourself. Plus, I was into Ted's sister big time.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Do you feel that you were in Teddy's shadow for a while during your career?
Jack Evans: Yeah definitely, but that isn't always a bad thing as there is no heat in the shade if you know what I mean. I am a self-proclaimed goofy, fun, loving kid, so I really have no need to be in the spotlight despite the fact all my teachers(and damn do I have beef with teachers) tried to diagnose me with ADHD.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: How does it feel knowing that you take some of Teddy's beatings in the ring, and take some of Teddy's heat, for things he does, that you have no involvement with?
Jack Evans: I don't mind it, I kind of get like this little hero feeling like inside, like when the brave little toaster sacrificed himself to save his friends from the crushing machine... That's probably one thing you never thought you'd get in this interview, is a brave little toaster reference for real. Anyway, (and why is anyway spelled with an A shouldn't it be enyway? ) After watching this one outer limits, where a guy stopped an alien invasion by giving his own life, despite the fact he would never receive credit for it and the human race would never know what just happened, that is kind of always the way I would want to go, but since I don't actually want to die, taking a beating for someone else is the closest thing I can get to that.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What are your thoughts on the 11/1 ROH show, where you and Teddy Hart impressed 1000+ people?
Jack Evans: Hey it was the night of the double moonsault and probably the biggest night of my career, so I absolutely loved it. I was so nervous and put so much pressure on myself to perform because I wanted to get out of obscurity wrestling the western canadian independent scene(although you should check out Stampede, TRW and ECCW out there, because they are very good promotions) so that night "Lose Yourself" just kept running through my head. AFTER the match is a different story, with all the drama, but in all honesty I didn't really care then and I have lost even more interest now, so I will leave that for the Teddy Hart interview you should do.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What was going through your mind during the 1080 legdrop during the Scramble Cage Team Match in ROH on 8/28?
Jack Evans: Just don't F**K up because you have a fiancee waiting at home, although I have now seen it, and it was UNEQUIVICALLY or however you spell that word a 720 legdrop. (I hate you diggitydog...I hate you so very...very...much)
That is the worst problem with having a girl waiting at home. I used to never be scared because if I got hurt, I would be a martyr in some weird masochistic way, but now I don't want to be a martyr- I wanna be a husband.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What was it like wrestling Homicide at CZW's Best of the Best IV?
Jack Evans: Scary, not only because of the whole Teddy thing looming over the match, but because along time ago I was messing around in the ring and out of no where, Homicide came in giving me tips and it blew my mind. Guys not even on that (Homicide's) level don't do that, let alone someone of his clout, so when it came ring time, I just wanted him to think of me as a good worker. Once again, I put probably unneeded pressure on myself, but hey, it came out good.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Will you ever be back in CZW?
Jack Evans: I really want to as I enjoyed my time there alot, but there is alot of outside stuff going on, and I am going to be trying to tone down some stuff, to heal up because I am slowly degrading as an athlete do, to aches and pains. Hopefully, though all the Philly promotions can get along, because I am hellbent on never getting involved in the politics of wrestling and there is alot of heat in Philadelphia right now...It definitely ain't the city of brotherly love, lemme tell you that much. Anyway though, after healing, I'm trying to get back on the ball with training and needed time to spend with my fiancée. So, anytime after the new year, I would definitely be open for a CZW return.
Squaring off against Trent Acid in USA PW
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What are your thoughts on your USA PW Debut match against Trent Acid?
Jack Evans: I liked it alot, but Trent is one of those guys that we should TEAR down the house together, in my opinion. So from that aspect, I don't think I held up my end of the match and although it was definitely a good battle with some of the best chair bumps ever, it will be the next meeting between me and Trent that will really be off the hook.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: You have quickly become the top high flyer in the indies today. What do you feel about the other cruiserweight and high flyer wrestlers today? Who do you like and who don't you like?
Jack Evans: Top high flyer now? Maybe, although I would be looking out for Javier (I think I spelled it right) and James "Don't Call me Jimmy" Newblood, to take that spot soon. I don't feel top cruiserweight though, as I would give that to either Red, The Grim Reefer or any one of Gen Next. It just depends on what style of wrestling you enjoy, because they all bring something different to the table for the different types of fans.

Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: You are now regularly booked here in the northeast. How does it feel like working in this area now, and do you feel that the northeast is the best area for
indy wrestling?
Jack Evans: I like working in this area because it is like one giant meeting place for wrestlers from across the country and I love chillin with the boys, as they are some of the funniest people I have ever met. The Northeast is definitely the indy capital for wrestling, but with that, also comes the negativity of politics and the like. As long as you stay away from that shit, the northeast is a very enjoyable place.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Out of all the northeast promotions you work for, what promotion do you think is the overall best, and what promotion do you think is a joke, if any?
Jack Evans: Best Product is probably ROH or JAPW. Most enjoyable locker room is HANDS down PWU and CZW, although right now listing those 2 together in the same sentence feels weird. I will have to give the nod to PWU, as the most enjoyable place, because there is no tension in the atmosphere of it at all, and it allows the boys to be boys. Although I hope the beef between those two can be put on a Foreman's Grill and served up on a platter, because I am still hungry in this buisness and fighting between the promotions is literally taking the food off of my plate.
As for promotions that are a joke I don't believe there are any. Every promotions TRIES. Maybe some of them don't succeed, but hey they got further then alot of guys who just sit back and be the armchair booker saying "I coulda ran a better promotion". Well you never put your money where your mouth is, so quiet down. The only way a promotion could really be a joke is if they flew you out a week early TWICE, cutting short the time you got to spend with your fiance who you only see 1 and 1/2 weeks out of every two months ANYWAY, and then cancelling both shows...
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What are your favorite promotions to work for?
Jack Evans: ROH, PWU and Stampede. Stampede is kind of my home base because I got kicked out of my Washington promotion for working for a promotion that actually PAYS ME, so I always enjoy returning there....Despite the fact they are in the desolate northern wastelands known as Canada.
Also, I have enjoyed my time in SSCW as well.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What do you think are your biggest strengths and weaknesses?
Jack Evans: Biggest strengths, I think are bumping and I think I am getting better at general selling too. Then of course, the Flippy McGuilicutty side of me always is a strength. The weaknesses would be, matwork and lack of aggression, not really in the ring, as much as outside of it, because I am quite complacent with the design of the match and go with anything and alot of times, if you don't force your will on other wrestlers, you will end up getting no offense. Or doing a spot where you ACTUALLY trip over a drop down...(sorry Chasyn, I am still so very bitter because it looked like a botch)
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What is it like working for Ring of Honor as part of Generation Next?
Jack Evans: Great. It has been the biggest push of my career and I feel like the little brother almost of the group, because they help me and give me tips and ideas and the like. So it has not only been good for my career, but for my wrestling.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What people in wrestling would you just like to slap in the face with all your might?
Jack Evans: Well I heard Michael Johnson hates me, so I guess I would have to say him, but then again, even if it is true that he doesn't like me, that doesn't really deserve a slap. It's just his opinion, so as much as I would like to have beef, and have someone to talk shit about, so I could use it and make a name, like what happens in hip hop all the time, I really don't have anyone I hate enough.
Everyone thinks me and Jerrelle Clark hate each other, because we were shit talking on the internet. That was actually a work cause we were going to meet in H2, and have a battle of the 630s, because I got hurt the first time around. We actually get along really well, although I am jealous of his theme music...
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What are your thoughts on having your shoes and Teddy Hart's shoes robbed by Homicide/Low Ki/B-Boy at JAPW?
Jack Evans: THEY ARE JORDANS!!! That isn't right or called for. The truth of the matter is they are jealous, because I dress better then them and have more style, so I can't blame them. I would want to look like me too...Although B-Boy better watch out and not leave his Nokia 6280 around, because I will pop my Sim card in that shit fast and with no remorse, after the shoe incident.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Knowing what goes on in the Hart family, what are your thoughts on Martha Hart's and Diana Hart's books?
Jack Evans: I love Diana and I only met Martha once, but I have been around and since I am "The Watcher" or the "Jehovis Witness" as Ted calls me, I know alot of the stories around that family and they don't match up. TJ Wilson is the guy to ask though as he knows EVERYTHING and ANYTHING. [About the Harts]
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What do you think is your best move in your moveset? Which is the toughest move to pull off?
Jack Evans: Corkscrew 630 is my favorite move and the standing double twisting moonsault is the hardest to pull off, although I can't call it part of my moveset, because I have only hit it on Nick Nogg and Pistol Pete Wilson in Practice matches. Stuntin 101 can be hard to pull off too, because off the springboard. If my feet aren't in the perfect positioning I will only get 1 and 1/2 twists, instead of 2. Still looks good though.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What is your favorite match that you've had in your career?
Jack Evans: In all honesty Aaron Idol Vs. myself from TRW, in Vancouver, because it just went so smoothly(also Aaron Idol is a guy people should watch. He doesn't get press, but is very very good.) The Gen Next 8 man at ROH or Me Vs. Ted #2 from stampede were also fun matches.
Actually the match I haven't seen in a while and is completely MIA, is a 6 man tag from the first Matrats House show. It had TJ and the Compton Crew (Jake and Jack Evans) Vs. Ted/Harry and Keishi Matsunaga. Keishi's high school teacher ended up running in and gave him a bulldog, so we could win the match and since alot of Keishi's High School classmates were there, it just got over so huge and the overall match was just really good.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What opponents do you enjoy wrestling?
Jack Evans: Trent Acid, Ted, Harry(although it can be a painful affair) Homicide, B-boy, the Grim Reefer... the list just goes on. Also Chasyn Rance, who is a very underrated guy and is really really smoothin the ring and never forgets ANYTHING. Also Ashe Samuels, who many remember as Lit from Special K has improved by Leaps and bounds, after coming to Calgary and is actually a very good guy to work with. Plus- you can shoot drop him on his head and make his chin touch his solar plexus and he barely will bitch at all.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What are your feelings on wrestlers who won't lose matches on the indy level?
Jack Evans: If that is your thing, that is your thing, you know what I mean, but don't get mad when that shit comes back to bite you in the ass and OTHER people won't job for you, and you will have a bad reputation and everyone hates you. You see me, I am all about my Legacy, because that lasts longer then the actual act of wrestling itself (which let's be real, is just a small sliver of time compared to your whole life) and people who refuse to do jobs NOW, will always be remembered for that, instead of anything they actually contributed.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What are your thoughts on all the deaths in pro wrestling?
Jack Evans: Well Pro-Wrestling itself has only killed Emiko Kado and Plum Mariko, that I know of. (although I guess Kensuke likes to go to work on little kids in training too) It's the choices people make outside of the ring. The saddest thing I think about the deaths in wrestling, is I hear stories from the friends of wrestlers who have passed on and alot of the time they just sounded like completely fun, great, people, but because the negative story is what sells, instead of THOSE stories getting spread around to the public, people will only tell the story of how they are another statistic blah blah blah. It is bullshit, because now when a wrestler who has died has kids, that log onto the net, they are only going to hear about their father, the statistic who died, instead of his father the man who many people enjoyed to be around while he lived. Maybe that is too much vomit inducing optimism, but in a world where EVERYONE and their mom is trying to act like a badass, who doesn't give a fuck, I think a little vomit inducing optimism is needed.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What promotions do you want to work for that you haven't worked for yet?
Jack Evans: REVOLUTION PRO! I actually had the booking and it got double booked, so I had to cancel, but that is Blitzkrieg's old promotion and hands down the place I need to work, and time is running out.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What is your favorite road trip story?
Jack Evans: I don't tell stories like that about wrestlers, generally due to the fact alot of times, it may involve something they don't want said and the like.
My funniest personal moment though, was with a friend of mine who wrestles here in Washington named Tony. Tony is allergic to Evergreen trees...but for some reason chose to move from England to WASHINGTON aka THE EVERGREEN STATE. So we are traveling to Canada to do a show, and I am half asleep not really paying attention to anything, when I look over and see Tony's nose running...no no no running is not the word...GUSHING no no no, still not the word... BLEEDING LIKE A HOOKER ON HER PERIOD WHILE BEING RAPED WITH A MEAT HOOK!!!! Ah there we go, that adequately describes it. Now a good friend would have probably done something...at least shown some form of emotion or something you know what I am sayin, but I felt like President Bush on 9/11. I just sat there wide eyed like WHAT THE F*** just happened? So Tony looks over my way with blood all over his nose, mouth, shirt, neck and hands, as he was trying to wipe it away and he shrugs his shoulders and so calmly, and almost apologetic, just says "allergies" and for some reason, I had a problem with inappropriate laughter at this time, and I just started to burst out laughing. I do feel bad about it, but it was just too much for me to handle. So maybe half an hour before we hit the Canadian border, it finally stops, but not before Tony could have given a blood transfusion to half of India. We had no napkins or anything and really weren't thinking so we pull up to the Canadian border, kind of cluelessly, and the lady looks over at us and gives the greatest look I have ever seen. In one facial expression, she summed up so many words and emotions... it basically was a "Oh HELL NO you don't actually think you are getting in here do you?" look. So this is the first time I have ever had to show my id or birth certificate or anything right to the first guard. She didn't ask a single question, she just pointed and said go to immigration. So we go to immigration and I am fine and dandy and everything, but Tony on the other hand is given the third degree. (although he did look like he just murdered somebody) After sitting there for four hours, while Tony is taken to the interrogation room, his whole history checked (which I am guessing also took longer, cause he is from England) he is finally released and allowed to go through, with the final little tip from a border guard, that he should really look into moving out of Washington State for the sake of his own life. The kid has been struck by lightening and doesn't have the best luck, so the thought of him dying from allergies was actually very real in my mind and for some reason extremely humorous to me.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Who do you think is the most craziest man in wrestling?
Jack Evans: Necro Butcher and Corporal Robinson... The drunken deathmatch was one of the greatest spectacles I have EVER EVER seen and will honestly go down in my era of wrestling as one of the best gimmicks EVER. Not only that, I had heard they were just wasted before they even stepped into the ring. Also, Necro vs. Mr. Insanity was nuts. However the craziest of all time, I have to give to Sick Nick Mondo.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What are your thoughts on message boards and internet fans?
Jack Evans: Because they can hide behind the computer anonymously, the internet has created so many fanboys, it isn't even tolerable at this point. No one on those messageboards act how they REALLY do in real life, and they just want to bitch and complain, because for some reason deep down, inside, everyone likes to be negative, if they can be. If they can get away with it, it's even better for them, I have noticed. You have your Mike Romes and Batman the Scientists and ROB MOTHER F'N Naylors, but they are few and far between. I used to love reading the boards, but I just can't do it anymore. It's not constructive, it's gotten to the point of uselessness.
"How Many Fanboys does it take to change a lightbulb? 10, 1 to screw it in and 9 to argue about how much better the last lightbulb was."
That sums up messageboards completely. You have 1 out of 10 people that actually can add something relevant and constructive, even if it is criticism, and 9 other people to completely wreck it all, because they try to play the fonz role and be too cool to put anything over or actually do anything other then flame people for differing opinions... Although now with Mark'd coming out in PWU, we are definitely going to give the wrestlers a form of revenge on all the messageboard fonzies out there.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Would you work for a promotion run by Rob Feinstein?
Jack Evans: There is some heat there right now. I'll leave it at that.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Who would be your dream opponent in your dream match?
Jack Evans: Blitzkrieg and Ricky Steamboat. Blitzkrieg because he is the guy I emulate, and Ricky because I have so much respect for him and the things he has taught me.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What are your thoughts on marijuana?
Jack Evans: No problem with it, if you choose to partake in such activies.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Can you tell us any of the ribs you have pulled on other wrestlers?
Jack Evans: Nah that aint me. I just enjoy it at the time. It aint me to relay stories like that, but I will tell you if you do mess around with The Grim Reefer, don't involve Fire Crackers, as he has a large disdain for them...
Or at least when they are in his car.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What are your career goals?
Jack Evans: Well truthfully in my mind, I have already made it farther then I was ever supposed to, so anything after this is a bonus. I just want to make sure I keep enjoying wrestling and don't get switched from the fun loving Jack Evans into the bitter shit talking asshole, that it seems pro wrestling turns people into.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What do you want to say to anyone reading this?
Jack Evans: www.corkscrew630.com is my website but it kind of sucks right now, so don't actually go there... I am trying to make a new one, but you know how that goes.
Actually you know what, I don't want to do shout outs or plug anything other then YOU! Sean "The Mic" McCaffrey". I just want to say you are my favorite pro wrestling journalist because you embody everything a prowrestling journalist should... A loud Irish drunk, with some of the best racist jokes EVER! But you keep it REAL, so you will always get props from me.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Thank you for your time to do this interview. BTW, did you ever hear the one about the Jewish guy and the Honda....
