DJ Hyde McInterview
DJ Hyde
What's up everyone and welcome to another McInterview, here on the DOI. Today's guest is none other than a big player in CZW,
DJ Hyde. DJ Hyde, who's won championship gold all over the northeast, from EWA to CZW, is preparing for the biggest night of
his life at Cage of Death, on 12/8. However, before that, DJ Hyde made time to do an interview with the DOI where he talks
everything CZW, his career, his goals & much more. I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: DJ, it's fair to say you've come a long way in just a few short
years in this business. Longtime CZW fans will remember sitting next to you in the front row of CZW events, then later
tearing the tickets and working security, and now, you are their Iron Man Champion. What do you attribute your incredible
success to in such a short period of time?
DJ Hyde: Dedication and Passion. I love this business , its my life. Its all i think about and want
to do.It. I have worked had to get where I am but i need to work harder and continue to improve my skills to get to where I
what to be. Also I think the people ( fans, the locker room, family, friends,ect...) who supported me have helped me get to
when I am.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: As we all know, there are countless promotions that run shows and
schools in the tri-state area which up and coming wrestlers can choose to work for. What made you choose CZW? Had you always
been a fan or did you just stumble upon the Combat Zone?
DJ Hyde: I've been a wrestling fan my whole life but its a long story really. just the details.
went to school on a football scholarship, got hurt , came home and got a job , met a girl, bought a house , had a good job,
went to a party , came home in the middle of something i was not supposed to see , threw a guy through a 3 story window , got
locked up for 13 months , lost everything ( house , job etc) I was down then a friend of mine took me to a CZW show to
cheer me up. and my love for wrestling took over. After going to a few shows, I looked around at all the places to train
at that time that i know of and choose CZW. I choose CZW for alot of reasons but mainly John Zandig. He didn't bs me or try
to take my money. He earned my respect right away. Also CZW is a family not just another fly by night place or looking for
a quick buck. The company also gives guys one of the best outlets to get you name out there.
EWA Heavyweight Champion
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Where did you train, and who trained you for your entry into big
time independent wrestling?
DJ Hyde: I have trained at alot of different places with a bunch of different people. I got my start
at the CZW Wrestling Academy. Then went on to train at the Wrestle Factory with Mike Quackenbush and Chris Hero, WXW under
Afa the wild Samoan.I have done clinics with a bunch of different guys. I can't say enough about these guys, They are the
some of the best trainers in the business . I learn more from my peers in the business then anything else
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Coming up in December, CZW will be holding it's annual Cage of
Death event. The way current story lines seem to be unfolding, it looks like you will be a part of the huge main event. What
does it mean to you that CZW thinks so highly of you to be a part of their biggest show of the year, and do you feel extra
motivation to raise your game for an event of this magnitude?
DJ Hyde: It means a great deal to me to be in the main event of the biggest show of the year. CZW
has a great deal of faith in me and I do not plan on letting anyone down. Stepping it up for COD is something the whole
company will do . Everyone will bring their A game and I plan on going above and beyond anyone .
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Lately, CZW fans seem to have grown more and more angry with the
state of the company. Some even say that your manager and CZW promoter Maven Bentley is a "money mark" who basically uses his
stature as the license holder to gain power in the company and book the shows how he sees fit. How do you respond to the
people who say Maven is running, and ruining the company?
DJ Hyde: I don't think Maven in ruining the company . He is doing whats right for CZW. CZW is a
business and Maven treats it as such. He is a business man and and know what it takes to succeed, Zandig and Lobo are still
around and continue to be a thorn in the MBA side. Hopefully we/ me will take control of this company.
DJ Hyde with
Maven Bentley, Two of CZW's Most "Beloved" Talent
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What has been your proudest moment since becoming a professional
wrestler?
DJ Hyde: My proudest moment was having my dad come to the show when I won the CZW Ironman Title for
the first time. After Chris Cash passed on it meant alot to me to have my family come to a show. TOD has got to be right up
there . Not to many people can step into a ring and do that let alone take 3 weed whacker shots. I have a few others but
these are the top.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Another rumor going around the Internet is that you are the head
trainer and maybe even the owner of the CZW wrestling academy? Is this true, and if so, what makes you qualified to be the
head trainer of Ultraviolence?
DJ Hyde: Head trainer , no. Owner , no. I don't owner anything in CZW. John Dahmer is the head
trainer at the CZW school. I am one of the trainers . The little bit of knowledge i do have I would like to pass on to the
next gen of guys. Qualifications : well i have been around a while now and have gained alot of experience in that time. I
have trained with and have been able to gain knowledge from some of the best trainers/wrestlers in the world. Also one of
the biggest things that is my experiences. I have made alot of mistakes in the business and burnt some bridges . I would like
people to learn from my mistakes as I did.
DJ Hyde with one
of his most prized possessions
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What are some of your future goals in the wrestling business? Do
you hope to move on to WWE or TNA in the future, or is DJ Hyde comfortable with his current status?
DJ Hyde: I would love to go to WWE or TNA or any company that will allow me to make a living at what
iI love to do. My goal as of right now first to continue to work on my craft and get my body in better shape. I would like to
wrestle as many places as I can. ( I am always looking for bookings Deejaymarkland@yahoo.com or www.myspace.com/djhydeone
) Also to get in more top companies . ( JAP, ROH , ect..) and get my name out there.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Is it true you wanted to "meet fans in the bathroom" at a recent
WWE event at the Wachovia Center? Was this just a joke, or should CZW fans worry about their favorite Iron Man Champion?
DJ Hyde: That was a joke that one of the fans took out of context . What I did was put out a post on
my my space ( www.myspace.com/djhydeone) saying that we were going to flyer the WWE show , but since the kick us out of the
parking lot almost all the time. we try to get the flyers passed out by leaving them in the bathrooms and handing them out
inside the building. All I was trying to do was get the word out for the show I was not "LOOKING TO MEET FANS IN THE
BATHROOM" . The fans had fun with it but hey I'm hated so let them do what they what, I can't stop it.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: In your time at CZW and elsewhere, you have faced some of the
biggest names in the business. What have been your favorite matches that you were apart of?
DJ Hyde: To be honest, anytime I get the chance to step in the ring and beat the crap out of someone
i enjoy it . But I have had alot of fun with Greg Excellent, Derek Frazier, The Brusier, BLKOUT , Zandig, Necro , Hero, and
Claudio Castagnoli just to name a few.
He may be
dangerous, but Hyde always has time for his fans
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Recently, CJ O'Doyle, a member of the CZW roster was fired by
management after fans continuously told him, "DON'T COME BACK, DON'T COME BACK". Do you think the fans should be able to have
this kind of influence over the fate of the roster, and are there other members of the CZW roster who should no longer be
booked in the combat zone?
DJ Hyde: Fans have every right to think and say whatever they want( and they do ) but decisions are
made on talent for lots of reasons. Fans do have influence, how much depends on the booker. I think czw roster is one of the
best out there today. There are guys like myself, Necro, Brain Damage, Drake Younger, Danny Havok, and BLKOUT , Scotty
Vorteckz, Die Hard Duston Lee, Mitch Ryder the list goes on of top talent in the business today.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: There are many companies that claim to be the best at "Hardcore"
wrestling. In your mind, where does CZW rank among the most ultraviolent of indy wrestling companies?
DJ Hyde: I think the word "Ultraviolent " says it all . CZW coined that phrase . I think CZW set a
standard and uses it as the trademark of the company . But there are many different companies who do hardcore well. ( IWA MS
, IWA DS ECT...)
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Because of your high profile in the company, some think you have
some say as to who enters and who leaves the Combat Zone. Whether or not this is true, what are some names that you think
would be a great addition to CZW?
DJ Hyde: There are a few people I would love to see come to CZW but I have no say in that. I would
also like to see some people return to CZW.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Some think your company, CZW, is involved in a high profile "indy
war" with ECW arena neighbor Pro Wrestling Unplugged and their "promoter" Johny Kashmere. What do you think of PWU? Are they
a threat to CZW, or is this whole "war" blown out of proportion by the Internet community?
DJ Hyde: I don't think that CZW is at war with anyone. Its just 2 companies that are trying to make
it to the top.
DJ Hyde also has
a flourishing landscaping business
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Not long ago, CZW was drawing crowds in upper hundreds on a
regular basis. Lately, the average CZW crowd has dwindled to a few hundred per show. What do you attribute this attendance
drop to? Do you think it will pick up for COD?
DJ Hyde: CZW fans are some of the toughest to please. They expect the best and have very Strong
opinions about the company . Things like how its run , story line, and to the talent that is in it . When fans don't get what
they want they protest in some form. Also there are many new companies that run in the same area, places like PWU and ROH
just to name a few. There is more competition then ever. Plus you see alot of the same guy on all these shows , so if the
is a wrestler a fan like ( ex : Necro) a fan can see him in CZW or ROH or JAP so I'll see him where its convenient for me.
These are just a few reasons but as for COD, COD is special its more then just a regular show you know you will get some
of the best wrestling in the world along with one crazy cage match . Its unlike anything you will see anywhere else. I hope
that the fans to come and expect that they will.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Who were some of your biggest influences in transforming from
wrestling fan to Champion wrestler?
DJ Hyde: Hogan, Homicide, Somoa Joe , Zandig , HHH, Koboshi , Stan Hanson , Vader ... just to name
a few
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What are your thoughts on Kingston's time in PWU?
DJ Hyde: Eddie is doing what he needs to do to survive . Whether it is PWU or another place. He is
one talented guy guy and will shine no matter what
The Price of
Glory
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Is it true that Zandig has been less involved with the company?
DJ Hyde: Zandig as a wrestler is retired . So fans do not see as much of him on the show
