Eddie Guapo
Eddie Guapo (right) with Low Ryda, WXW Tag Team Champions
Whats the deal? Today I sat down with Eddie Guapo, one half of the WXW Tag Champions. Guapo's roots are in the old doghouse, and Guapo has been on fire as of late, by having great matches with Striker to his tag team matches in WXW w/Low Ryda. Guapo took the time out to do this interview, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, as Guapo talks about a variety of subjects.
Sean The MiC McCaffrey (From here now known as The MiC: )What made you get into wrestling?
Eddie Guapo (From here now known as Guapo: )I've been a long time wrestling fan and remember every one of my favorite matches from WWF to NWA to UWF to WCCW. There was no federation I didnt watch if it was on I knew about it.
The MiC: How did you get into wrestling?
Guapo: I basically found the Doghouse by accident. I'm still not clear how I got the flyer but I got a flyer and met TOT in 2000 and then started in January of 2001. I guess it was just luck.
The MiC: Who were you favorites growing up? Guys you didn't like?
Guapo: Well everyone from the Doghouse knows I marked out hard for Hot Stuff Eddie Gilbert and The Freebirds!!!!! I loved how cocky and arrogant they were and of course HBK the greatest of all time Shawn Michaels.
The MiC: What goes through your head before each match?
Guapo: I'm always really nervous and I'm just going through the match in my head. I'm also trying to keep loose since I tend to get real stiff before my matches. So I tend to think of the basics make sure footwork is crisp and try to not get the, "you fucked up" chant of the night.
The MiC: What are your favorite promotions that you have worked for? Least favorite?
Guapo: I love with all my heart and miss the LIWF/DPW. That was my start my home and my family and I was all about it. Right now I'm a mainstay in WXW and always will be loyal to them because Afa gave me a shot when nobody else would and I love him to death. I'm also hoping that ICW flourishes because there are very creative people there and with the right amount of publicity the next crop of stars could easily come out of there.
The MiC: How does it feel when a promotion acknowledges that you are championship material, and gives you a title, such as you holding tag team gold in WXW?
Guapo: That was my first title and it came at an early stage of my career so I was very thankful but we surely earned it. Low Ryda and me might not have been the most popular but we did it by going through whoever was put in front of us and having consistent matches and good performances along with crowd reaction. I am surely happy in WXW and hope to help it be one of the premier feds in the east coast.
The MiC: Who are your favorite guys to tag team with?
Guapo: Hands down Low Ryda because of our chemistry but Id be a liar if I didn't mention my brief stint with The Christopher Street Connection with Mase Mendoza because he is truly one of my best friends in the business and he taught me alot. If it wasn't for the fact that Buff set such a high standard with how great he was and the fact nobody would give us a chance, we would probably be teaming today still.
The MiC: What do you think about the indy scene today?
Guapo: I think the indy scene is full of talent but the fans have lost their patience. because of the lack of entertainment on television they hold a higher standard when they come to the shows and thats fine, but if a guy doesnt do a bunch of high spots fans are quicker to jump and say they suck on the message boards as opposed to giving them a chance to develop. And another thing that bothers me a bit is the lack of respect for the sport and people training 2 months then jumping in the ring because they could moonsault. That shows a lack of respect for the people that had to work hard for their spots.
The MiC: Who are your favorite wrestlers today in the indies? WWF? Least favorite in the indies? WWF?
Guapo: Ok this will
be a while
The MiC: What are some of your career goals?
Guapo: I have been very blessed to do alot that I wanted to accomplish. Working ROH was the shit and I would hope to do that again someday. I would also like to work for ECWA because of its history and tradition and the fact that Jim Kettner runs a professional company. Puerto Rico would also be cool and I want to make my mark at home at the Elks Lodge and not bust my ass going into the ring.
The MiC: How much driving do you do in a month?
Guapo: My god too
much and according to All Money is Legal and Low Ryda I dont drive too well
The MiC: What would be your dream match?
Guapo: My dream match would have to be against Christopher Daniels at Ring of Honor. Boogalou at the Elks Lodge. And Low Ryda at Sports fest so we could tear the place up.
The MiC: What do you think has been your best match or career highlight?
Guapo: I was very proud of the match I had with Striker at ICW in Passaic because it was strictly work when people thought wed do characters. I really wanted to show what I could do. Career highlight would have to be myself and Low Ryda winning the WXW tag titles against the Moondogs that was the culmination of alot of time and effort rewarded.
Word Association
Afa A true living
legend and father figure. A straight shooter who tells you like it is and gives
everyone a chance. He sticks with what he says and always does whats best for
the company.
Jac Sabboth Hes given alot of crap but truly launched the careers of alot of
indy guys back in 2001 and if given a chance could run a productive company.
Frank Goodman A businessman who obviously knows what hes doing. I just wish
I could have been given another chance to wrestle or at least been given a courtesy
call after I was taken off the show the last minute and never given an exact
reason or explanation why.
Vince Russo Polluted wrestling by introducing the writing aspect of it. The
only time acting should be done in wrestling is during promos. Interviews should
never overshadow the wrestling.
Vince McMahon The Godfather of wrestling created it but also killed it by making
it a monopoly.
Hogan Living legend couldnt stand him but its good to see him finish where he
started it( There LLL you happy he got his props) Hes no Gilbert...
Stone Cold Great wrestler, excellent character. I wish he would wrestle like
he did in between 91 and 94 when he was one of the best pound for pound in the
world but hey whatever gets over
Rock A better wrestler then people give him credit for
HBK In my humble opinion the greatest. He did it all before there was anything
to do
Angle The best wrestler in the world right now hands down and could beat most
anyones ass in a shoot.
Rey Misterio The best cruiserweight ever.
Eddie Guerrero Awesome wrestler and glad everything straightened out with him
so he could put on more stellar matches.
Lo Ryda Under rated because he doesnt fly. What people dont realize is how diverse
he is he could fly if he chose to but could also flat out wrestle as well as
shoot. One of my brothers in this business
Homicide My trainer mentor and another brother. He gave me a chance and taught
me when nobody else wanted to and when others gave up on me. I'm happy for his
success as he deserves it as much as anyone.
Boogalou A bad ass in the ring and out and another one of my brothers who taught
me alot. Hes the best and always guides me in the right direction its only a
matter of time before he explodes.
DRS Accomplished everything they wanted without hesitation with hardwork and
dedication even if it might have tarnished some friendships or bonds, but I'm
glad to say that we are cool now.
Team Extreme Which one WXW or NWA TNA? I can bet you Dylan Dean is scratching
his head right now....
Declaration of Independents Love it and when I retire id love to write for it
!!!!!!!! Whats up Wizard
Eddie Guapo Hard working and appreciative of everything he's given and whatever
opportunities he has. Will try his best and go out of his way to thank anyone
who gives the time to give an opinion. Whatever you think of me good or bad,
Ill never stop working hard and never stop trying to be the best.
The MiC: Is there anything you want to say to people reading this?
Guapo: Very soon eddieguapo.com will open so check that out. WXW in Hazleton will be running all summer and keep an eye out for me my time is coming soon.
