As part of our on-going 2007 ECWA Super 8 coverage, the DOI will be interviewing all eight Super 8 competitors in this year's tournament. Our interview today is none other than New England star, Brian Fury. Fury works all over the New England area, as he came out of Chaotic Wrestling. This year's Super 8 will mark his first ECWA experience.
With less than a month ago, find out who Matt Brian Fury is and his thoughts on the Super 8 tournament.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Hey Brian, it's a pleasure to have you on the DOI. My first question for you is what was going through your head when you were called by Jim Kettner to see if you were available for this year's Super 8 tournament?
Brian Fury: I was ecstatic to say the least! Of course I tried to play it cool, and thanked him for the honor. It was a bit hard to believe that I was selected for such a prestigious tournament.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What does the Super 8 tournament mean to you, especially since your trainer was former Super 8 winner, Steve Bradley?
Brian Fury: The Super 8 is an awesome event, quite possibly the biggest thing outside of ROH, TNA or WWE here in the states. It is a great opportunity to showcase my talents in front of a lot of people that have never seen me before, and hopefully lead to other places down the road. The fact that my trainer won the tournament back in 1999 doesn’t matter to me too much. Maybe a little bit of pressure on me to prove myself to him, and show that he taught me well.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: For fans who don't know you, what are some of the promotions you have worked for?
Brian Fury: I currently wrestle regularly for Chaotic Wrestling in MA. New England Championship Wrestling in MA. Defiant Pro Wrestling in MA.
I wrestle/ have appeared sporadically for Front Row Wrestling, Eastern Pro Wrestling, East Coast Championship Wrestling, and Top Rope Promotions. I recently made my debut in NY for Squared Circle Wrestling (2CW).
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Who has been a positive influence in your career?
Brian Fury: Firstly, and mostly Steve Bradley. He took my shell of basic wrestling knowledge (having trained previously before joining his school), and expounded on it beyond my wildest dreams!
Next would be Alex Arion and Eddie Edwards. I have had so many matches with the both of them, and they always bring out the best in me. They have pushed me to new limits in the ring, and for that I thank them greatly.
Lastly would be Nikki Roxx/Roxxi Laveaux. She made me look outside of my little circle of wrestling. I was happy being a big fish in a little pond, and she changed that greatly.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Would you like to wrestle anyone specifically at this year's Super 8? Is there anyone you think you don't match up well with?
Brian Fury: Honestly just the honor of being in the Super 8 is so awesome it doesn’t matter who I wrestle. Obviously I would like to wrestle Lynn or Conway just because of where they’ve been, and see how I match up with them, but I’m not picking anyone in particular.
As far as matching up with people goes, I think I match up well with everyone. I can wrestle pretty much any style, so I’m not worried about being out of my element.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: With DVDs highlighting promotions all over the world and an abundance of promotions doing tournaments seemingly every week, do you think the Super 8 tournament means as much as it used to?
Brian Fury: Of course it does! It is the original, and it still is the best. Look at the Super 8’s track record. How many stars have come from it? No other tournament has that type of track record. This is the one tournament that gets people buzzing about every aspect: who is in it, who do you think will win, who had the best match, who won? No other tournament matches up.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey:In your opinion, what matches of yours are your favorite? Are there any matches that you think made ECWA promoter Jim Kettner say, "I need him for this year's Super 8?"
Brian Fury: Depending on how I read this I have 2 different answers.
1~ My series of matches with Alex Arion, Eddie Edwards and Kid Mikaze have been my favorites. Every match in each series was awesome and built to the big blow off match. It was like every match was a chapter in a book. They all worked out perfectly.
2~ I love hard hitting, fast paced matches. I’m also a big fan of squash matches, don’t ask me why because I couldn’t tell you!
I don’t think there are any matches in particular that make Jim ask me to participate. I just think he saw the change in me from a skinny little green kid in a tag team for NECW to the mature, confident man that wrestles now.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What is the shadiest thing you've ever seen in wrestling?
Brian Fury: I’ve seen a lot of shady things. I can’t and I won’t pick the shadiest!
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey :Working primarily in New England, do you find any differences between New England fans and NY/NJ/PA fans?
Brian Fury: It depends. Even in New England you have tough crowds on any given night. It just seems like in the NJ/PA area they are tougher than here, and tough more regularly. When I say tough, I mean they like to wait for anything to go wrong, or something they don’t like, and then they let you have it! However, if they like something, or are impressed they let you know that too. Here in New England fans mostly go to just enjoy the show.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Are you physically prepared to go three matches in the Super 8 tournament?
Brian Fury: I sure as hell hope so! I’ve been upping my cardio a ton at the gym, and training in the ring 3 times a week. I don’t think I’ll have any issues.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What's a normal day in the life of Brian Fury?
Brian Fury: Wake up, eat, work, work out, eat, nap, eat, ring training, eat some more, then sleep. A bit boring, but it does the job! My weekends are usually spent traveling to shows.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What are your short-term and long-term career goals?
Brian Fury: My short term goal is to compete in and kick ass at the Super 8. Hopefully get noticed by some people and get more work.
Long term: Live off of wrestling. It doesn’t matter what capacity either. I love this business, and I would love for it to be all I do.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Is there anything you want to say to anyone reading this?
Brian Fury: Thanks for making it this far in my boring interview! If you’ve seen me wrestle before thank you for coming to the shows. If you haven’t seen me wrestle, what are you waiting for? Visit my MySpace ~ www.myspace.com/xbrianxfuryx
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Thank you for your time and good luck on 11/10.
