As part of our on-going 2007 ECWA Super 8 coverage, the DOI will be interviewing all eight Super 8 competitors in this year's tournament. Our interview today is none other than ECWA Hall of Famer, Billy Bax. Bax, who is a veteran of the northeast indy scene, has found his home in ECWA where he holds the record with Rob Eckos, as 1/2 of the longest reigning ECWA tag team champions in ECWA history.
Billy Bax, who talks about why he's taken some time off from the indy scene, has been an ECWA regular for a while. Arguably, this year's Super 8 will be the biggest show in Bax's career.
With less than a month ago, find out who Billy Bax is and his thoughts on the Super 8 tournament.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Hey Billy , it's a pleasure to have you on the DOI. My first question for you is what was going through your head when you were called by Jim Kettner to see if you were available for this year's Super 8 tournament?
Billy Bax: I was pretty excited. The first ECWA show I went to was the Super 8 in 1998. Being a fan of the tournament for so many years before I started wrestling, I was pretty pumped to be invited. It’s been a goal of mine since I started wrestling 7 years ago and now to finally achieve it feels great.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What does the Super 8 tournament mean to you, especially since you've been in ECWA for so long without participating in the tournament?
Billy Bax: It’s a huge honor to be included in such a long list of talented performers. It’s been a stepping stone for so many people in the past. A good showing could mean the biggest night of my wrestling career so far and catapult me to a new level.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: You are an ECWA Hall of Famer, with your Valedictorians tag team partner Rob Eckos. How does being in the Super 8 compare to the honor of being in the ECWA Hall of Fame?
Billy Bax: The Hall of Fame induction was huge honor and displays my accomplishments in the ECWA alone. The Super 8 is my chance to make a name for myself on a bigger platform.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Who has been a positive influence in your career?
Billy Bax: Jim Kettner is definitely the most positive influence in my career. He’s helped me achieve everything I’ve set out to do in wrestling so far.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Would you like to wrestle anyone specifically at this year's Super 8? Is there anyone you think you don't match up well with? Are you nervous about possibly being paired against your partner Rob Eckos?
Billy Bax: I think I could go with anyone in this year’s tournament. When you get around this level of competition you need to be able to adapt to different styles. And if it comes down to wrestling Eckos, so be it. The only thing that matters at this point is winning.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: With DVDs highlighting promotions all over the world and an abundance of promotions doing tournaments seemingly every week, do you think the Super 8 tournament means as much as it used to?
Billy Bax: I think it means as much now as it did in the past. The Super 8 is still a tournament that consistently produces stars year after year.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: In your opinion, what matches of yours are your favorite? Obviously, being an ECWA regular, Jim Kettner knows what you are capable of. However, are there any matches that you think made ECWA promoter Jim Kettner say, "I need him for this year's Super 8?"
Billy Bax: Jim has been able to watch me progress over the years and help me get to where I’m at today. I don’t think there is any specific match that made him choose me. He obviously thinks I’m ready for this, I know I’m ready for this, and I want to show the people that come to the Super 8 what I’m capable of doing.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: You've been on the indy scene for some time, but don't get as much work as your partner Rob Eckos. Why do you think this is so? Do you think it's just due to having a busy "real" life?
Billy Bax: Actually, I stopped taking a lot of bookings a few years ago because of that reason. It was hard to focus. I was working full time, going to school full time, trying to find time to work out, and wrestling twice a weekend. I lost some momentum from not taking more bookings, but it hasn’t hurt me. I’ve still achieved every goal I’ve set for myself in wrestling so far. I just finished up my Undergrad this summer so wrestling is definitely at the top of the priority list again.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: You've done several guest spots on WWE television. Would you ever consider wrestling for TNA or would you rather not jeopardize your WWE chances?
Billy Bax: My dream is to work full time for the WWE but if TNA were to present itself I would love to wrestle for them. I just want to be able to eventually make a living wrestling full-time.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Are you physically prepared to go three matches in the Super 8 tournament
Billy Bax: Right now I think I’m physically prepared to do anything.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What's a normal day in the life of Billy Bax?
Billy Bax: Work, school, the gym, spending time with the girlfriend, and a lot of naps in between.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: What are your short-term and long-term career goals?
Billy Bax: Within the next year or so I’d like to finish up my MBA so I have a good education to use if something goes wrong. My long-term goal is to be able to make a living wrestling full time in the WWE.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Is there anything you want to say to anyone reading this?
Billy Bax: A select few might not know who Billy Bax is before the Super 8 on November 10th, but they’ll sure as hell know who he is after it.
Sean "The MiC" McCaffrey: Thank you for your time and good luck on 11/10.
