THE THIRD ANNUAL DOI 250

1. Chris Candido- Chris Candido joins Christopher Daniels and Homicide as a number 1 ranked wrestler in the DOI 250. Everyone knows the story about the tragic death of Chris Candido and we'd rather not rehash his death, as we'd rather boast about his achievements. When the DOI first started working on this list in the beginning of April, several wrestlers were considered to be number 1 in the DOI 250. After much debate and consideration, we decided that Candido would be in the number 1 spot before his death. After his death, we decided that his contributions to indy wrestling in the last year and his matches in the 10 months of this grading period, were more than enough to warrant and earn a spot at the top of his list.

Chris Candido wrestled for JAPW, UXW, PWU, IWA-MS, AWA, NWS, NWA-NJ and many more promotions during the grading period. Chris was a major fixture in the north east indy scene and left the wrestling business just the way he entered it, as a top talent in the northeast region. During the grading period Chris Candido had great bouts with Homicide, Mike Kruel, Jay Lethal, Balls Mahoney and others. Not only was his wrestling top notch, so were his promos. Chris was also very versatile in the past year, as he could do it all, from smart mark type matches, pure wrestling matches, comedy matches, and anything else that was asked of him. Chris also held the UXW US Championship twice during the time period, in addition to winning championships in NWA-NJ. Chris didn't have one bad match during the grading period and was able to make the people he wrestled against better than they actually were. He also took good wrestlers to new levels, as was evident with his matches with Homicide and Mike Kruel. During many indy shows in the last year, Chris Candido was involved in the match of the night. Weekend after weekend, Chris was able to be in the best match of the show, and was usually the top wrestler of the weekend.

For Chris to be in more matches of the night, than any other wrestler on the indy scene, in the past year, that is the reason why he is number 1 in this years DOI 250.

Chris, who will always be remembered as one of the best guys not only in the indy scene, but in wrestling, will be missed by all wrestling fans and the people that knew him. We just wish he was still here with us today, but we will always have memories and tapes to remember him by.

2. Homicide- Homicide, last year's number 1 wrestler, would've probably been number one again this year, if Candido didn't have such a strong year. Candido might've even wrestled in more northeast indy promotions than Homicide did.

Homicide ran wild all over the indy scene, collecting many titles and tournaments in his path. Homicide won the JAPW Heavyweight Title, the FIP Heavyweight Title and the PWU Heavyweight title during the time period. He also dominated ROH and had many strong matches there. Homicide, who wrestled all over the indies this past year, was similiar to Candido, as both men were able to take their opponents to new levels. Homicide wrestled for JAPW, ROH, UXW, AWA, 3PW, PWU, CZW, and other promotions in the past year. During this time, Homicide had strong matches with CM Punk, Samoa Joe, AJ Styles, American Dragon, Jay Lethal and others. Homicide, who has been called the new-age Terry Funk, has pretty much done it all in the northeast, except for winning gold in the promotion that gives him the most notoriety- ROH.

Homicide also showed flashes of brilliance as a tag wrestler, as he won the JAPW Tag Team titles with B-Boy and formed a feared tag team called Corpicide (w/Corporal Robinson) in PWU. No matter if it is with the Rottweillers (ROH), the Strong Style Thugs (JAPW) or Corpicide (PWU), Homicide will always be a leader and major player in the northeast.

3. CM Punk- this future WWE star accomplished his last goal in indy wrestling, three weeks before this list was made, as Punk won the ROH World Title. Punk had another great year as he wrestled for ROH, IWA-MS, UXW, JAPW and other indy promotions. Punk, who can never be replaced in ROH, had 5-Star 60 Minute Draws with Samoa Joe during the time period. Punk was involved in many match of the year contenders as both a singles and a tag wrestler. Punk gets the nod over Joe in the number 3 spot due to wrestling in more promotions in the northeast area.

4. Samoa Joe- Arguably the biggest star in the biggest indy promotion, Samoa Joe had another fine year. Joe held the ROH title into December before dropping it to Austin Aries. Soon enough, Joe was able to win the ROH Pure Wrestling title. In addition to being a main fixture for ROH, Joe wrestled for JAPW, UXW, IWA-MS and other promotions. Joe was involved in what everyone called the indy match of the year, against CM Punk, over the ROH World Title. Joe might've ranked higher than the number 4 spot if he was more of a fixture in the northeast, as this list is northeast based.

5. AJ Styles- the former ROH Pure Champion added a few NWA World Title reigns under his belt. Not bad for this Georgian, as AJ Styles, the phenomenal one, just keeps adding to his reputation as the best wrestler without a WWE contract today. AJ wrestled for ROH, JAPW, IWC, 3PW and other promotions during the time period. AJ had good matches with Christopher Daniels, Homicide, Jimmy Rave and others this year. AJ could easily be at the top of this list, but we're betting that it's alot easier financially, to be the NWA World Champion, then just wrestling in the north east full-time.

6. Christopher Daniels- the master of the Angel Wings, and a previous #1 in the DOI 250, had another excellent year, wrestling for JAPW, 3PW, NWA Cyberspace, TNA, IWC and other promotions. Daniels, who left ROH due to outside politics, is scheduled to return to the promotion in July. If he wrestled in ROH this past year, he probably would've been ranked higher. Daniels had classics against AJ Styles this past year. He also won the TNA X-Division championship as well.

7. Jay Lethal- 2004 was a break-out year for Jay Lethal and 2005 proved that Lethal was for real. If there was a show in the northeast, there were good odds that Lethal had either the first or second best match of the night. Lethal wrestled for AWA, JAPW, ROH, UXW, PWU, CCW, NWA Upstate and other promotions. He was involved in good matches with Homicide, Azraiel, Samoa Joe, Low Ki and others. Lethal also won several belts, such as the JAPW and AWA Heavyweight titles, in addition to the ROH Pure Title. Lethal definitely had a strong year and the scary thing is that he will only get better, as he is very young.

8. American Dragon- American Dragon, who didn't really wrestle in the northeast that much, deserved this ranking for his strong work in ROH. Dragon had a great best of 5 series with Homicide, in addition to having an 80 minute match with Austin Aries in August of 2004 for ROH. Dragon might be the best pure wrestler today. A match with Chris Benoit would be a smart mark dream match.

9. Low Ki- the enigmatic Low Ki shocked the fans this year and turned heel. Low Ki returned to ROH in July of 2004 and joined the Rottweillers. He later joined up with his trainer Homicide, in JAPW as one of the Strong Style Thugs. In addition to ROH & JAPW, Low Ki wrestled for UXW, IWC, 3PW and for other promotions. Low Ki, despite not wrestling in the northeast every weekend, gets a high ranking due to the quality of opposition and prestige of the promotions he wrestled for. Low Ki had great matches against Austin Aries, B-Boy, CM Punk and others.

10. Mike Kruel- Mr. Charisma himself, Mike Kruel, had a great year. Kruel collected the UXW Heavyweight and United States Championships. Kruel also won the prestigious Jersey J-Cup. The former ECWA Heavyweight Champion wrestled for ECWA, UXW, NWS, ROH, Chaotic, AWA, PWU and for other promotions. Kruel had good matches against Jay Lethal, Chris Candido, Balls Mahoney and other wrestlers this past year. Kruel definitely has that WWE look to him, so it should be interesting to see if he's still on the northeast scene at this time next year.

11. Austin Aries- a big year for Austin Aries, as Aries became the fourth ever ROH Champion, ending Samoa Joe's lengthy title reign. Aries defended the belt against very strong competition such as Colt Cabana, Homicide, Samoa Joe, CM Punk, Low Ki and others. Had an epic encounter with American Dragon in August 2004. Led Generation Next for most of the year and helped ROH rise as the top indy company today.

12. Jack Evans- he may be the indies version of Sabu, as he innovates crazy moves and will probably never see the 1/10 of the money he deserves. Has been an ROH regular for more than a year now and has stolen many ROH shows with his insane brand of wrestling. Teamed with Teddy Hart to win the JAPW Tag Team Championships in March of 2005. Won the PWU Cruiserweight Championship. Also competed for CZW, UXW and other promotions. After putting his body through so much punishment, Jack is expected to take time off as this list went to print.

13. Dan Maff (Mafia)- Held the JAPW Heavyweight Championship for a year, before he left the business. At the time of his departure, he vacated the JAPW Heavyweight and ROH Tag Team titles. Was involved in a tag team classic on 7/24 for ROH. Had big matches against Trent Acid, Jay Lethal, CM Punk and others. Might've been ranked higher on this list if his personal life didn't affect his wrestling career.

14. Trent Acid- with his tag team partner taking a break, Trent became one of the most popular single wrestlers today. Competed in ROH, JAPW, PWU, NWS, UXW, 3PW and for other promotions. Went to the semifinals of the Jersey J-Cup. Won the UXW United States Championship. As explosive he is in the ring, he's just as explosive on the microphone. Trent also returned to JAPW and has become a fixture of the company. At 24 years old, the sky is the limit.

15. B-Boy- this SoCal standout has taken over the northeast. B-Boy won the JAPW Tag Team Championships with Homicide. Also won the CZW Iron-Man Championship. Also competed for PWU, ROH, SSCW, JCW and other promotions this year. Had good matches against Grim Reefer, Jay Lethal, Low Ki, Deranged and others. Towards the end of the time period, B-Boy won the JAPW Light Heavyweight Championship. B-Boy will now wrestle his first complete year living in the northeast area, and there's no telling how much better he will be by this time next year.

16. Azraiel- Azraiel, who has won the DOI's Most Under-Rated wrestler award in the past, has definitely broken out of the under-rated category, as he has had a great year. Azraiel won the JAPW and AWA Light Heavyweight titles, in addition to going to the finals of this years Jersey J-Cup. Azraiel also competed for UXW, ROH, PWU, CCW and other promotions. Azraiel also broke away from the "spot guy" image he had in ROH and is being taken seriously by the promotion and fans alike. Azraiel had a great feud with Jay Lethal this year. Azraiel was also part of some good matches against Reefer, Deranged, B-Boy, Homicide, Samoa Joe and others this year.

17. Roderick Strong- This Florida native, who is known as the king of the backbreaker, had a great year, here in the northeast. Had some great matches in ROH, representing Generation next. Also wrestled for CZW and went to the finals in Best of the Best IV. Had good matches with Homicide, CM Punk, Sonjay Dutt and others during the year.

18. Alex Shelley- joined Generation Next and saw his ROH career skyrocket. Wrestled in CZW. Competed in this years Super 8. Quickly became one of the more talked about indy wrestlers in the north east. Still integral in the Michigan region, Shelley has built up a nice following here in the northeast.

19. Balls Mahoney- won the UXW Heavyweight title for a record 7th time. Also wrestled for NWS, NWA NJ, and in other promotions. Gained some weight back after losing alot of weight, but can still go in the ring. Had good matches against D-Lo Brown, Mike Kruel, Raven and others. Slated to have some WWE try-out matches in the upcoming weeks. Balls might be the best active big man wrestler on the indies today.

20. Steve Corino- the King of Old School won another world title, as he picked up the AWA World Title from Takao Omori. In the northeast, Corino competed for ROH, JAPW, UXW, PWU and in other promotions. Challenged Jay Lethal for the JAPW Title, and has made it clear he wants the UXW Heavyweight title too. Had a great match against Al Snow at UXW. Left ROH on his own terms earlier this year. Still is a killer heel on the mic after all these years.
