DOI Note: We're pleased to reprint a column from April Hunter's newsletter, talking about Jacqueline's recent WWE Cruiserweight Title win.
Your New WWE Cruiserweight Champion…Jacqueline?
Jacqueline is back! YAY! (But what the f….?)
Chavo Guerrero vs. Anyone. The champ (male) challenges anyone to step up. After a prolonged TV absence, Jacqueline (female) gives him a low blow and rolls him up to become your new champion.
If you’re not familiar, a cruiserweight is (usually) a male of small-to-mid stature (under 6’- 6’2”, but many tend to be positively tiny) whose offense includes an acrobatic, high flying arsenal. Their fast paced, daredevil moves almost always make them crowd favorites.
I’ve been a Jacqueline fan since I began watching wrestling and in my opinion, she’s arguably the best female on the WWE roster. One of the only wrestlers who competes crisply like a man, she still looks like a woman (with an utterly incredible body and honestly, who doesn’t have fun watching those massive breasts?) and I would love to see her compete against men more often. There aren’t many females outside of Japan who can wrestle convincingly and look like they’re doing real damage in the ring.
This is where the women who read this (yes, there ARE ladies who read my newsletter) are going to be disappointed in me.......but I don’t think Jacqueline, as the cruiserweight champion, was such a good idea. Not for lack of talent on her part, but for the reason that it could be interpreted by fans as a bit of a slap to all Chavo’s previous (much larger and presumably stronger male) competitors who couldn’t beat him. Many seem to feel that this “killed the belt”. I wouldn’t go that far and have a feeling that only the men feel this way. Remember, Chyna successfully carried the Intercontinental title for a period of time. (Most men seem to feel that if a woman touches anything outside of the kitchen, she’ll kill it. IE: driving.
...Aiiight, in fairness some days we’re not the keenest of drivers…) However, as a fan, I’d love to see both the cruiserweight and women’s division built up to their fullest.
This storyline would have been a perfect opportunity to debut a new talent who’s been sitting patiently in the back, such as Paul London, a brilliant wrestler in his own right. Or one of the many overlooked talents on the Independents like Amazing Red, Low Ki, Sonjay Dutt, Homicide or any of the other guys who regularly bust their ass and eat their expenses to wrestle all over God's green earth each week for the love of it. What a coup it would be to debut against an established name like Chavo Guerrero.
Plus…the ladies have their own division. Right now, it might actually be chocked TOO FULL with women for just one RAW division. They could add more mixed tags (always crowd pleasers) but it still seems as if they have more women than they can handle right now.
WWE always has been a big man’s world and the cruiserweight division has gone in and out of vogue faster than most people change their underwear. Immediately giving someone a title (Jerry Lynn, Gail Kim) tends to be a kiss of death.
For that reason, I’d rather see Jacqueline chasing the title, giving us incredible and unique matches instead. Who can forget Trinity fighting for the title and having an amazing feud with Kid Kash on TNA, thus giving her more credibility as a wrestler? She's not just 'some chick in the ring'; she's also held her own against men.
The rule states that you shouldn’t complain unless you can offer a solution. Ideally, Chavo will have a rematch against Jacqueline, but bring in a debuting female who would cause her to lose the title. This would then start a chick feud and implement a much-needed women’s division for the Smackdown brand.
Everyone has asked me what I thought of this, so here you go. These are just my opinions. And you know what they say…opinions are like assholes; everybody has one.
Anyway, at least with Jacqueline holding the title, we’ll get to see kicking ass on TV each week. Even if it’s only for a little while.
