IWA Puerto Rico-Juicio Final Tour...

I know I didn't do a UK diary yet…that's because there's a LOT to write, a ton of pictures and it's headed for my Members-only area, along with hottie Raven Lee, me and Jasmine St. Claire and my newest edition of Big Red Centerfold TV.

Last week I worked in Puerto Rico for IWA. For those who came out (and there were a shitload of you!), thank you! IWA in Puerto Rico is like the WWE in America. Amazing televisions shows, packed houses, professional and top-notch talent. There were thousands at the house shows and about thirteen thousand at the TV taping.

Not to undermine the USA, but a frustrating trend I see is that we seem to have a thinking here that's "if it's not in American, it doesn't matter. And if it's not on TV in America, it ain't shit." Unfortunately, most don't know about wrestling out of the States because we have little or no exposure to it, but let me assure you— it's alive and kicking. I do think you can catch IWA on some Spanish channels or Dish or something. (Oh, I'm so jealous of the British Wrestling Channel. 24-hours a day of international, classic and Indy wrestling. Sweeeeeet…)

Anyway, I was coming off a somewhat disappointing UK tour (the fans rocked, but there were other issues), and had a wicked case of bronchitis so I almost canceled PR. I'm very glad I didn't because it was much, much better than last time.

On the way to the airport, I had the cab driver from hell. This guy arrived right on time and then started off by yelling at me from his window to hurry up as I was locking up…something that never fails to annoy me. He can clearly see I'm locking up, on my way…and isn't he getting paid either way? Then he refused to stop at Dunkin' Donuts so I could grab a sandwich…but DID coming to a screeching halt for every yellow traffic light and allowed other cars to pull into traffic. The final straw was when I sneezed (with my hand over my mouth), and he rolled down the window saying he would "get rid of those germs". It's March. In Boston. Icicles are still hanging off trees. I didn't have a coat on because I wanted to travel light to Puerto Rico. I was honestly having murderous fantasies at this point. With less than an hour until takeoff, we're sitting stock still in traffic. I'm starving, sick, annoyed…and this wank bag is telling me `relax it'll all be ok' with his big, gay smile. We'd missed our last flight to the UK and it screwed everything up, making us come in a day late, leaving us stranded at the airport because the promoter couldn't be reached and sticking us with a ninety pound ($170) cab ride we argued and eventually ate, so I wasn't hearing this. Subtlety was completely lost on this window licker, so I finally screamed at him to speed it the fuck up. Please. I'm absolutely sure he thought I was the biggest bitch on the planet.

Slyk and I (http://www.SlykWagnerBrown.com) just made it, got on the plane and arrived in Puerto Rico where we found they moved all of us (Homicide, Vampiro and Nozawa, whose name is properly spelled N-o-z-a- w-a…I asked…) to a bug-and-lizard-free hotel. Yay!

Fuel is a mere 42 cents a gallon in Puerto Rico. Yeah. No kidding, I took a picture of the sign at the gas station. It had just been hiked up from .39/gallon, but most people weren't moaning like they are in Cali where they're paying over two bucks.

The tour was cool. We all usually met in the lobby, even though four o'clock in Puerto Rican time usually meant 4:45. One night we were REALLY late and the driver was cutting every corner he could to get us to the venue by showtime. A toll came up…he blew by the long line and cut in just as we saw the blue lights. I guess in PR they ignore cops or something, because no one on the bus even acknowledged them… and then they-the cops-got stuck paying the toll. No respect! They continued to chase us with their lights on, but we'd had a head start, pulled off an exit and watched them go by. I was all paranoid, thinking we were going to be shot at, which seems to be a popular pastime in PR…

We survived and I worked La Tigressa, who is one of the best and most challenging opponents I've ever stepped into a ring with. It was a good match up because she's a lot like me…big, fights both males and females and is a tough bitch. Abvriela, a gorgeous little manager who Tigressa was bullying and beating up every week, brought me in. She had finally gotten tired of it all after a particularly bad episode and hired me to give La Famillia's Tigressa a taste of her own medicine. I worked a lot of mixed tags and then on the anniversary show night, I finally had her one-on-one. Oh, I also had Abvriela as a valet. I get some of the prettiest valets on these overseas tours! The show was held outside in a sold-out baseball stadium with 12,000-13,000 people packed in…and of course, it rained. Between the second and third match, the sky opened up and started pouring. We were, naturally, third. It was kind of fun, like wrestling in an ice rink, though I was fighting for footing as well as fighting Tigressa. For once, most of my offense came off the top turnbuckle because it was actually easier footing up there! In the end, I defeated her with the Headhunter. When Abvriela came in to raise my hand, Tigressa attacked me from behind, throwing me out of the ring and hitting Abby with brass knuckles. I'm sure this is not over and I'm looking forward to going back in May.

Slyk & Homicide will be teaming up to fight Chicano & Stefano as well. (Also in May I'll be in Chicago the 7th & 8th and may be in California the 15th for APW; Team SWB vs. Cheerleader Melissa & B Boy tentatively.)

The last show was on Sunday, an early show. Saturday was daylight savings time the NYC based news channel told me, so I set the clock forward and then the alarm for morning.

When I got up, after just a few hours nothing seemed to be going on. A phone call down to the front desk revealed that PR does not participate in the turning of the clocks ahead…

Monday, back to the airport. Even at 5:30 am, it's packed. What is it about driving and airports that makes people so decision impaired? I was going through the carry-on baggage security and the line was barely moving. It didn't help that you have to remove hard-soled shoes to be scanned. The large family in front of me took off their flip-flops to go through. Open. Toe. Flip. Flops. (If you're reading this, you, your wife and your kids are all fucking idiots.) Speaking of, I got in line to get breakfast…. a guy orders a small coffee and a Danish and pays with a hundred dollar bill. Kill these people. Please. It would be merciful…

I didn't get many show photos on the tours, so if anyone did in UK or PR, will you please email me? comments@aprilhunter.com

Chersire Online, one of UK's biggest newspapers does a feature on April Hunter.

If you go to April Article you can read an article about April Hunter and her international work.

April Hunter and Slyk Wagner Brown will be on the All Star Wrestling UK tour, which starts Friday 19-28, then Slyk and April will make their way to IWA Puerto Rico on April 1-5 for their second PPV.

Here is some of the article reprinted from Cheshire Online:
April really will get hold of you Mar 12 2004
Paul Lucas, Chester Chronicle

FROM topless dancing to body slams and from Playboy magazine to the 'squared circle', nothing about All Star Wrestling's April Hunter has ever been conventional. She talks to Paul Lucas ahead of her visit to Chester's Northgate Arena for a wrestling spectacular next weekend.

FORMER Playboy Playmate April Hunter swapped the pampering and luscious life style of glamour modelling for the hard knocks and rough and tumble of professional wrestling. As she prepares to perform at Chester's Northgate Arena, alongside tag team partner Slyk Wagner Brown, she reflected on an astonishing transition.

'I was more or less done with fitness modelling. Most girls only have two good years in it until they're replaced and I was never one to kiss ass to elongate that time, so decided to move on.'

Her big break came in 1999 when she was approached by World Championship Wrestling (WCW). The ill-fated company was vying in a ratings war with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and April was immediately thrown into one of its successful storylines - the new World order (nWo).

'I loved it and now realise how lucky I was at the time,' she commented. 'It was a valuable experience, but I wish I could have done more.

'The travel was very hard too. You'd think being able to travel across the country like that is amazing, but the truth is, you'll be in the air or at the airports all day, in town for just a few hours and never see anything but the hotel and arena.'

However her time with WCW came to an abrupt end when they were six weeks late with her pay.

She said: 'They were behind on cheques! Really behind! I left because I wasn't being used, yet was turning down offers to do fitness videos and photo layouts. I didn't realise I should 'pay my dues' and wait.

'I had a model's mentality - you're only as good as your last published shoot - and figured I should be getting 'out there' some other way. So, I left.'

Despite her abrupt departure she had 'caught the wrestling bug'. She invested in training at Walter 'Killer' Kowalski's wrestling school and began to work for a number of independent wrestling promotions.

'It's like the minor leagues compared to the majors,' she said. 'On the independent shows, which generally only happen on the weekends, we pay our own travel most of the time, the pay scale is much lower or non-existent and it's more of a learning field to see if you can make it to the next level.

'On the upside of things, we get to sleep in our own beds most of the time. With WWE, you're on the road four days a week, minimum. There is also an inbetween alternative, which is touring out of the country. UK, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Puerto Rico, Europe - all offer more consistent work.'

Though the thought of a woman wrestling may strike the casual viewer as odd, April is determined to break down prejudices.

'There's only one women's match per show, and less opportunities to tour and work. Plus our bookings are more looks-based rather than talent-based at times. I'm very happy to have the opportunity to come back to the UK and work for All Star, which is a great show and has quite a few top quality female wrestlers.

'In the USA, women who wrestle are not taken seriously. You have to be 'hot' and oh, if you can wrestle too, that's cool.

'We can go out and kill ourselves, but at the end of the night, maybe it doesn't matter.'
