1PW 'A Cruel Twist of Fate'
The Dome, Doncaster, England
Saturday October 1
1PW have just finished their debut show, "A Cruel Twist Of Fate", at The
Dome in Doncaster, England, with a lengthy show of USA Pro proportions that
ran close to five hours. With the show being the first from 1PW, nobody can
really expect everything to have ran smoothly and to time, and by all
accounts, the show was a success, although due to the length of the show,
some people had began to leave the building before the main event.
As was the plan going into the show, Tommy Dreamer's appearance saw Raven vs
The Sandman turned into a triple threat match, which the crowd were hot for.
As we announced , 1PW announced that they will return with shows in
Blackpool, England, and a return to The Dome in Doncaster in January. AJ
Styles, Abyss, Samoa Joe, Charlie Haas, Elix Skipper, Christopher Daniels,
Sabu and Masato Tanaka are scheduled to appear.
Although not a capacity crowd, 1PW drew a good crowd after many weeks of
good local advertising, with around 1300 of the 1500 or so seats sold. Prior
to this evening's show, 1PW had held a "VIP Conference" during the afternoon
for fans, with the likes of AJ Styles, Chris Sabin, Jonny Storm, Low Ki, and
Austin Aries taking part in a Q&A session in front of close to 200 fans (the
session was limited to 200). 1PW also had publicity going on during the day
in and around The Dome, including appearances by several of the wrestlers at
the nearby Doncaster Rovers football game.
Before the "official" show began, 1PW held a "Proving" Battle Royal,
featuring Chad Collyer and a ton of UK wrestlers, with the final two facing
each other in a singles match to earn a 1PW contract. Collyer was one of the
final two entrants alongside UK wrestler Darren Burridge, with Burridge
winning via pinfall to earn a 1PW contract.
Results from the show as follows:
- Jody Fleisch & Jonny Storm beat Chris Sabin and Jerry Lynn in what was
said to be a great opening contest after Storm pinned Sabin.
- Tracy Smothers (with UK wrestler "MTX" acting as his bodyguard) beat The
Blue Meanie. Said to have been a comedy match with a "dance-off".
- Spud, Stevie Lynn, & Shabazz beat James Tighe, Ice XVII & Ross Jordan in a
6-man tag match showcasing some of the UK's young lightweights. Abyss and
Sterling James Keenan did a run-in following the match to destroy several of
the wrestlers, with AJ Styles coming out to the make the save and referees
keeping Styles and Abyss apart ahead of their match later in the night.
- Sterling James Keenan beat D'Lo Brown
- Steve Corino beat Al Snow to retain the AWA Title. We've had mixed reports
throughout the evening on this one, and although technically a great match,
it appears it didn't go down well with some of the live crowd. Snow and
Corino impersonated a couple of WWE wrestlers and used their trademark moves
and expressions to get cheap pops, which appeared to have got the crowd back
into the match.
- Low-Ki beat Iceman after making him tap-out.
- Doug Williams pinned Austin Aries. Said to have a been a solid, ROH-style
match that you'd expect from the two. They had a confrontation after the
match with Austin refusing to shake Williams' hand.
- The Sandman beat Raven and Tommy Dreamer in a "Raven's Rules" Triple
Threat match. After Raven cut a promo to turn heel on the crowd who were
popping for him, Sandman came out to his full-length Metallica entrance,
before Tommy Dreamer appeared and his appearance led to a triple threat
match. The match itself was a total brawl, with tons of weapons spots.
Dreamer got a standing ovation from the crowd before and after the match.
Some people had started to leave by this point - understandable as by this
point it was well past 11pm and those having to travel will have risked
missing trains and buses.
- AJ Styles pinned Abyss in the main event. Good match which would have
likely gone down better if the running of the show had gone to plan. James
Keenan got involved and tried to assist Abyss but Styles fought him off and
got the pin on Abyss.
